"Warmer When It Rains does indeed signal an evolution in Joanna Teters' songwriting and sound with her sultry voice as the common ingredient in this delicious gumbo of love-centric songs" -Soulbounce
Brooklyn songstressJoanna Tetersshares soulful debut album Warmer When It Rains exclusively via Soulbounce and will celebrate the release at NYC's Mercury Lounge on Jan 30.
Written between 2012 and 2017, the collection of songs reflects Teters development as a songwriter, local musician and woman. In many ways, the album bridges the creative gap between Teters' time as front woman of Mad Satta and her evolution as an acclaimed collaborator and musician in NYC's R&B, reggae and disco scenes.
Each of the songs, though currently profound and lush, modestly began in Teters' bedroom in Jamaica Plain and pull from the 25-year-old's climate; emotionally and externally. The lyrics to “Warmer When It Rains” were jotted down while watching the steam rise from spring-time sidewalks on a particularly warm day after a cold northeast winter. Other songs from the record like “Memories Remain” and “Since Monday” were crowd favorites at Mad Satta shows, brought to life by a robust eight-piece band in its initial stages, while more recent songs like “Ride With You” and “Through The Night” were written and performed once the band pared down to five, and into the rehearsal space shared by longtime bandmates Ben Carr, Ted Morcaldi and Zane West, joining together to support Teters when she decided to adopt a solo bill. Prior to this, Teters led a number of other Brooklyn-based bands including Lowtone Society, iLa Mawana and more.
Recorded at ZooLabs Studios in Oakland, CA., the songs were jointly engineered on both West and East Coasts by Drew ofthe Drew over the course of the year. Joanna and Drew are longtime collaborators, first joining forces at Berklee in 2010. Ben Carr, also known as Carrtoons. stepped forward as Drew ofthe Drew’s co-producer for this record, making a palpable mark and perfecting Teters' polished authenticity.
