High Up will release their debut album You Are Here on this Friday via Team Love. You Are Here can be pre-ordered now via Bandcamp. The album was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit, Monsters of Folk) at ARC Studios in Omaha, Nebraska. This week the band shared new singles "Domino" and "Blue Moon" with Brooklyn Vegan and PopMatters. You Are Here is also streaming in full ahead of Friday's release date at Atwood Magazine.

High Up announced a full U.S. that will kick off in Chicago on March 1 and will include shows in Nashville, Washington, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and more. The band will also be performing at this year's Treefort Festival and Savannah Stopover. All upcoming shows are listed below.

High Up singer Christine Fink moved to Omaha to be closer to her sister, notable singer songwriter Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, etc.) back in 2012. Down South in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Christine had been known to exercise her theatrical roots at the the local karaoke bars - and to great effect. The first time Orenda saw Christine sing at Sheffield’s Old Town Tavern her jaw dropped as she watched her sister bring the house down. After a few years in Omaha, Orenda noticed that Christine brought the house down no matter where she was singing- with people of all ages and walks of life lining up to buy her drinks and even give her requests to sing their favorite soul songs. But Christine was depressed, feeling aimless, shuffling between minimum wage jobs, and the thrill of the weekend performances wore off quickly. One night, the two began to talk about the future, and Orenda insisted that Christine should try and do what makes her happiest- perform for people. After much discussion, they decided to start High Up, a collaboration mixing elements of indie, punk and soul that showcased Christine’s powerful vocals and Orenda’s seasoned songwriting.

The band, which includes Josh Soto, Todd Fink (The Faint) and Matt Focht (Head of Femur, Bright Eyes) draws from a wide variety of influences- from Janis Joplin, (who Christine is frequently compared to at live shows from misty-eyed ex-hippies), Sam Cooke, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins to Dead Kennedys and The Birthday Party.

"Rare Birds is easily Wilson's most lavishly orchestrated work... At once cosmic and chillingly immediate, Rare Birds shows Wilson exploring the many possible outcomes of that old equation of inspiration - heartbreak plus time equals art... He's an utterly original and irreverent thinker who's evolving with blinding speed." - NPR

"Wilson's latest nods at Zappa, Talk Talk, Peter Gabriel and The Byrds... Rare Birds unpacks a wealth of sonic detail... This feels like a record you could lose yourself in for months." - MOJO - 4 Stars ****

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Karen Elson, Conor Oberst), returns with his third solo release on Bella Union on March 2nd, 2018. It's currently streaming exclusively as part of NPR Music's First Listen series. The ambitious "maximalist" album, titled Rare Birds, features contributions from Father John Misty, Lucius, Lana Del Rey, and New Age music legend Laraaji.  The album is receiving rave reviews, including 4 stars from British music bible MOJO.

A highly sought after record producer, North Carolina native Wilson had a busy 2017, producing Father John Misty's Grammy nominated Pure Comedy and touring arenas around the globe as a guitarist and vocalist for Pink Floyd legend Roger Waters (for whom he also contributed to the Grammy nominated Is This The Life We Really Want? album). Wilson also saw widespread acclaim heaped on Karen Elson's sophomore LP Double Roses, which he recorded with her in Los Angeles in 2016. But 2018 looks to be even more active as he'll be continuing on with the worldwide Waters tour, releasing Rare Birds and completing a headline tour of US and Europe in the spring.

The Nothing They Need
Dead Meadow's unique marriage of Sabbath riffs, dreamy layers of guitar-fuzz bliss, and singer Jason Simon's melodic croon have won over psychedelic pop/rock and stoner rock fans alike.  With their new album The Nothing They Need (Xemu Records) the band show that in 2018, they continue to fuse their love of early-'70s hard rock and '60s psychedelia into their own distinct sound.
The album was recorded in Dead Meadows' studio/rehearsal space, The Wiggle Room and it celebrates twenty years of the band with eight songs that feature everyone that has been musically involved with the band over the years.  Jason and Steve Kille are joined by original drummer Mark Laughlin, Stephen McCarty ( the drummer throughout the Matador years), and current drummer Juan Londono.  Cory Shane joins them on guitar for some Feathers era dual guitar interplay.
Reflecting on the the album's title, Steve notes, "It's basically is a statement of the constant throwing out of content these days without reflection or making real art.  This album underlying theme is to try to think about things outside of that and look back to a time when film, music and books were about something not just numbers, and if not we are going to truly kill ourselves as a species." Jason says, "Everything Steve said rings true though the title also resonated with me in a more positive sense in that a grand "nothing" is something so rarely experienced these days.  Many times what I need most is to turn everything off, leave the city, and get to the middle of nowhere.  In that sense The Nothing They Need also refers to what's beyond the inane unending distractions of modern life, some sort of stillness or peace that is increasingly hard to find but so sorely needed."
While Dead Meadow met in and around Washington, D.C.'s punk/indie scene, the trio draws more of its sound from such classic rock legends as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. The trio formed in the fall of 1998 and their widely-acclaimed self-titled debut album was released in 1999.  Within a relatively short period, the D.C. trio received offers to tour with everyone from local D.C. acts like The Make-Up and Fugazi to psychedelic rockers Brian Jonestown Massacre.  What has followed since are seven studio albums - three via Matador records (Shivering Kingand Others(2003), Feathers (2005), and Old Growth (2008)) -  two live albums which includes Three Kings, a feature length live film and soundtrack and more tours across the USA and Europe than the band can count.  And while the person behind the drum kit has changed over the years the core of Dead Meadow -  Jason and Steve -  have continued to play together throughout.   Since 2007 they have been based in Los Angeles.
When not playing with Dead Meadow Kille runs Xemu Records while recording and producing many other bands.  Jason Simon has released two solo records.  One under the moniker Old Testament, with former and current members of The Black Angels and The Black Lips, and another under his own name entitled "Familiar Haunts."

Nonpareils (Aaron Hemphill) Unveils New Video For "The Timeless Now"; New Album Out April 6

Photo: Nonpareils
Aaron Hemphill has shared the video for “The Timeless Now,” taken from his debut solo album, Scented Pictures. Released under the name Nonpareils, these are his first recordings since an amicable departure from Liars in 2016. Nonpareils Scented Pictures is out April 6 on Mute.

The animated video – directed by Kateřina Blahutová (DVD JNNS) & Julia Parchimowicz (BADJUJU) – features a walk through an underground corridor maze filled with time-accelerating elements. Watch here.

Preorder Scented Pictures here.

Hemphill and Blahutová met in Prague (where she was working as an architect, VJ and DJ) and was the first person he thought of when it came to commissioning a video. He explains, “Katerina has such an inspiring enthusiasm and energy for music, art, and things I never knew were fascinating until she showed them to me in a different way. I had seen visual work from her and, while each project looked a bit different, I felt that it could be different parts of the same world that she sees.”

Blahutová goes on to explain the video concept: “We live in a world which keeps us constantly grounded by clock time. The passage of time is highly context-dependent and intimately entangled with our activities and surroundings. Our time can be measured in indeterminate blocks between meals, checking for notifications, waiting for the end of a shift, time to catch a train, time to achieve results, time to fulfill life goals. Does wasting time negatively affect others’ valuation of us, but conversely actually make us more human? Can a certain time period be locked in a place? Does a living space like home translate into time?”

The songwriting displayed on Scented Pictures is metaphysically restructured pop, the wealth of sounds and sonic processes at Hemphill’s disposal having diversified and warped since Mess, his final studio album with Liars.

Based in Berlin since 2015, Hemphill started working on Scented Pictures by recording stacks of acoustic instruments while, in his words, “doing the silliest things.” He played drums without click tracks, encouraged his engineer to distract him, and played the piano while allowing poorly set-up microphones to fall away from the body of the instrument. Ultimately the sound palette grew out further, taking in a vast array of virtual instrumentation too, all glitched and processed into off-kilter music.

Having sought out new sources of inspiration following a long period of focusing solely on instrumental music, Scented Pictures sees Hemphill’s songwriting take on yet another new form, mutating into something woozier and increasingly abstract — without sacrificing the hooks in the process.

“ the Goddess of Gross, the Punk Elephant, the Big Bad Mama of the Midnight Movies... [and] a Miss Piggy for the blissfully deprave.” - People Magazine on Divine
Lethal Amounts in conjunction with Goldenvoice, is excited to announce the Sex Cells Divine Ball, a tribute to the legendary pop culture icon Divine. Bold, brassy and deliciously vile,  Harris Glenn Milstead’s drag persona Divine was the muse of legendary filmmaker John Waters. Divine was the star of Waters’ most celebrated and career defining early films including Female Trouble, Polyester, and Pink Flamingos which went on to be a hit in the U.S. midnight movie circuit, becoming a cult classic and establishing Divine's fame within the American counterculture.
In addition to film, Divine made a career in disco releasing several successful albums and singles. She went on to perform in plays, and even developed her own stage show. Divine is probably best known for playing not one but two roles in John Waters’ most popular and most mainstream film Hairspray. Edna Turnblad, the loving mother of the lead character Tracy; the second, that of the racist television station owner Arvin Hodgepile.
Divine died in 1988 but her legacy is ever present through her films, her influence on artists and musicians, and the even the Disney villain Ursula from The Little Mermaid is based on her. She remains an icon and role model for outsiders and underdogs, and created the blueprint for the body positive movement making her the perfect centerpiece for Sex Cells, the monthly club night created by Lethal Amounts owner Danny Fuentes, that attracts a wide array of colorful characters due to the openness of the environment, and creative freedom Fuentes and his team foster and encourage. “I saw Pink Flamingos when I was thirteen,” says Fuentes. “I was probably far too young to watch it. It made me feel an array of emotions from scared to demoralized,  to laughing out loud, but most importantly in changed my life and put me on the course for what I am doing now, assaulting people’s senses.”
“Sex Cells is an open place for each individual who can be who he wants to be, no matter of age, race, gender, sexuality. Values I always defended and are more precious than ever.” -Miss Kittin
The night will feature Lethal Amounts’ resident DJ’s Matthew Pernicano and Danny Lethal, and a “Divine” contest with a $500 cash prize for the “Best Divine.” The night will feature celebrity judge Mink Stole with more to be announced in the coming weeks.

(LOS ANGELES, CA, February 22, 2018)— GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter/performer/producer/actress/activist, Janelle Monáe, unveiled new details of her highly-anticipated third solo album project, DIRTY COMPUTER. The “Emotion Picture” includes an album and an accompanying narrative film. The album is available for pre-order beginning today and arrives everywhere Friday, April 27th. Release date for the accompanying narrative film to be announced soon.
Today, Monáe released two anthemic, electric singles, “Make Me Feel” and “Django Jane” with complementary music videos from the Emotion Picture.  All pre-orders include downloads of the premiere singles, both now available individually across all DSPs and streaming services.
Make Me Feel”, directed by Alan Ferguson, captures the spirited, celebratory voice of Monáe as she affectionately nods to the ripe sounds surrounding the 1980’s music and dance revolution. Delivering electric vocals, pop hooks and confident, female-driven lyrics, Monáe brings the song to life in a vibrantly colored video highlighted by provocative silhouettes moving across the screen. “Django Jane” underscores Monáe’s ability to unleash her biting, unapologetic flow in a song that embraces contradictions as part of the beauty of individuality. The video was directed by Andrew Donoho and Chuck Lightning with additional vagina monologue footage directed by Lacey Duke. The song is a powerful black girl magic womanifesto that celebrates the strength of black women and black culture while addressing the trials and tribulations of identity in the 21st Century.  Both videos are streaming now on Monáe’s YouTube channel
The DIRTY COMPUTER project was heralded with a very special teaser that premiered last weekend ahead of screenings of Marvel Studio’s history-making Black Panther. Notable outlets such as NPR, Billboard, and W Magazine, among others, praised Monae’s cinematic range and vision. The trailer is streaming now via YouTube and Monáe’s official website
2016 saw Monáe embark on her film acting career with stellar performances in two milestone films, Hidden Figures and Moonlight; both films received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, with the latter winning the award at the 89th Academy Awards.

Nandi Rose Plunkett writes, records and performs under the name Half Waif. Accompanied by bandmates Adan Carlo and Zack Levine, the project embodies Plunkett's pensive nature and her lifelong endeavor to reconcile a sense of place. Raised in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Nandi was the daughter of an Indian refugee mother and an American father of Irish/Swiss descent. Growing up she listened to everything from Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos, to Celtic songstress Loreena McKennitt and traditional Indian bhajans. In college she studied classical singing and became engrossed with the works of Olivier Messiaen and Claude Debussy. Her output as Half Waif reflects these varying influences, resulting in a richly layered collage of blinking electronic soundscapes, echoes of Celtic melodies and the elegiac chord changes of 19th-century art music.

Half Waif has self-released two EPs and two albums -including 2016's Probable Depths, which caught the attention of the worldwide music media, with NPR singling out track 'Turn Me Around' and Pitchfork awarding it their coveted Best New Track distinction. In 2017, Half Waif joined the Cascine family to release her form/a EP - a collection of tracks that expanded on her exploration of place-making and home, and that earned her acclaim from a wide range of culture critics. In the same year, Cascine reissued Probable Depths, giving the album its first ever vinyl pressing. Half Waif also spent 2017 on near constant tour, supporting artists such as Julien Baker, Iron & Wine, Land Of Talk and Mitski. This year, Half Waif will release her latest body of work: a new album titled Lavender, due for spring release on Cascine.

Nandi shared the following on the album: "Lavender is so named for my grandmother Asha - a nod to the lavender she would pluck from her garden and boil in a pot on the stove. The first time I noticed her doing this, it struck me as a kind of magic: the small black cauldron bubbling with a piece of the earth. She did it to make the house smell good. I believe it was also a ritual of purification, clearing out any shadows that may have tried to creep into the old English home she'd lived in, alone, for fifty years.

When I wrote and recorded Lavender, my grandmother was alive, and though she wasn't ill at the time of her sudden death in September, it was obvious her life - after 95 years - was drawing to a close. As a result, themes of aging and collapse are all over this album. It is an elegy to time, the pilgrimages we take, and the ultimate slow plod towards our end. It is an examination of the way we fracture, inside ourselves and inside our relationships - the fissures that creep along the structures we build, the tendency towards disintegration.

We face many endings in our lives, on the path toward that unfathomable yet omnipresent ultimate Ending. Break-ups and divorces, marriages and the estrangement of the self, hard times and bittersweet relief, steep precipices that rise up beyond our control over and over again. These endings are markers of time and growth, small personal apocalypses that pockmark our days. And yet there is more to come when the terror subsides; even the night itself - that great darkness - must end and give way to new light. Lavender is a talisman to hold in the midst of that uncertainty, to heal and remind ourselves that it's not over. It's not ending yet."

Lavender was written by Nandi Rose Plunkett, with arrangements by bandmates and touring members Adan Carlo and Zack Levine. The record was co-produced by David Tolomei and mastered by Heba Kadry. It launches April 27, 2018 on Cascine.
