Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Announces Final Round of Lineup Additions and New Safety and Security Measures

September 3, 2019 - San Francisco, CA - Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, which takes place October 4-6, is proud to be returning to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for its 19th year, and is asking fans to help spread the word about the new regulations in place. As the world changes, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass feels the need to respond, prioritizing safety over convenience. We understand that these changes will make our event differ from years past, but are hopeful that our long-time fans will embrace these new rules and enjoy the performances as they always have. Please work with us as we make these changes. As Mavis Staples sings in “Dedicated,” “And if it's us against the world, well, I would bet on us to come out on top. But if you go yours and I go mine, all bets are off.”

Important things to know:

  • We have added fence lines. Enter only at these four locations. Click herefor a map.
  • JFK Drive and Transverse Drive
  • Fulton Street and 30th Avenue
  • JFK Drive and 36th Avenue
  • South Polo Field

  • Do not bring coolers, they are no longer allowed. We have updated our concessions in anticipation of increased public need. Click here for a list of vendors and new offerings.

  • Any bags/backpacks must be clear plastic, measuring less than 16”x16”x8”.

  • Entrances will not open until 9am.

  • There will be increased SFPD and Tactical Unit presence inside and outside the venue.

  • Blankets and short backed chairs (seats no more than 9” from the ground) are allowed, but will be subject to search.

  • Any restricted or oversized items will be turned away at all entry points.

See a complete list of items that are and are not allowed at hardlystrictlybluegrass.com.

Be aware that the side paths that have been used for years will be closed off with fencing for the protection of everyone involved. People who arrive early to lay down blankets will have to wait until 9 am. This was a difficult but necessary decision. Please be courteous and patient with fellow music lovers as we make this significant change. As usual, fans are asked to respect the park, to clean up after themselves, and to take everything out that’s been brought in.

Be conscious of your setting and the people around you. SFPD wants to remind all guests to “say something if they see something” and look out for each other—reporting any suspicious persons or activity to HSB staff or a police officer. To report a non-emergency to SFPD, please call 1-415-553-0123. Stay informed of emergencies or significant events by signing up for AlertSF, an emergency text message network, by texting “HSBlue” to 888-777. Additionally, stage announcers will keep you informed throughout the day.

And now for the news you have been anticipating! After four straight weeks of artist announcements, HSB is proud to announce “all the rest,” the final installment of performers for this years festival. In addition to the already-announced list of artists, Adia Victoria, Bill Frisell : HARMONY F: Petra Haden, Hank Roberts & Luke Bergman, Bill Kirchen, Bobby Braddock, Brothers Gibb, The Budos Band, Chastity Brown, Fantastic Negrito, The Flatlanders, The Go To Hell Man Band, Ismay Presents: Songs and Stories from Sonoma Mountain, Joan Osborne, Joan Shelley, John Kay, Jon Langford and the Skull Orchard Welsh Male Voice Choir, Judy Collins, Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands, Lebo & Friends featuring George Porter Jr., John Molo, Wally Ingram, Adam MacDougall & Jenniffer Hartswick, Live From Here with Chris Thile withGrace Potter and J.S. DEAD KENNEDYS IGUANA STUDIOS REHEARSAL TAPE - SAN FRANCISCO 1978 RELEASED SEPTEMBER 27TH ON MANIFESTO RECORDS / SELECT CA SHOWS IN OCTOBER

Dead Kennedys Iguana Studios Rehearsal Tape – San Francisco 1978
released September 27th on Manifesto Records

Purchase here

Select CA shows in October

Iconic punk band's 40th anniversary celebration continues with this release of rare early recordings on CD.

Straight out of San Francisco, the Dead Kennedys became punk legends with a slew of classic singles, such as "Holiday in Cambodia" and "California Über Alles." Any punk fan worth their salt, knows and loves these songs, but may not have heard these early, alternate versions.

Due Sept. 27th on Los Angeles-based Manifesto Records, the rare Iguana Studios Rehearsal Tape -- San Francisco 1978, captures the band bashing out these classics in their earliest-known incarnations. The take on "Holiday in Cambodia" is a bit slower in tempo, more melodic, but no less fierce. "California Über Alles" takes on a more ominous tone in this lo-fi rendition. This release is the latest in a series from Manifesto marking the iconic punk band's 40th anniversary.

The 13-song collection, which also includes such notable tracks as "I Kill Children" and the DK's infamous cover of "Rawhide," features the band's original lineup of singer Jello Biafra, guitarists East Bay Ray and 6025, bassist Klaus Flouride, and drummer Ted, in its first year of existence. This set was recorded two years prior to the release of the band's 1980 debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.

Previously available only as a bootleg and finally legitimately released on vinyl for Record Store Day in 2018, the Iguana Studios Rehearsal Tape – San Francisco 1978 makes its debut on CD for the first time due to overwhelming demand. As the title indicates, the recordings were captured on tape at the legendary Iguana Studios on Folsom Street, where such DK contemporaries as The Avengers also rehearsed.

Aside from the aforementioned songs, the Iguana Studios Rehearsal Tape features such rarities as the punky reggae "Dreadlocks of the Suburbs," the aural assault known as "Cold Fish," the captivating "Kidnap" and punk-prog rocker "Mutations of Today," which make their first official release here.
No DK's collection is complete without this aural artifact. Take a journey back to Iguana Studios in 1978 and hear the band in their infancy, before they became the punk legends you know and love.

Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story shares trailer; film traces the history of the seminal Los Angeles band

BORN INNOCENT: THE REDD KROSS STORY SHARES TRAILER;

FILM TRACES THE HISTORY OF THE SEMINAL LOS ANGELES BAND;

KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN TO FINISH THE FILM STARTS TODAY

EMMY-AWARD WINNING WRITER AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF FRIENDS TO DIRECT

The filmmakers behind Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story share a trailer of the documentary that coincides with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to help finish the film. The trailer can be viewed HERE.

Link to the Kickstarter campaign:
In 1978, in the Southern California beach suburb of Hawthorne, the same town that was home to The Beach Boys, two brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald aged 15 and 11 respectively, started a band called The Tourists. The first time The Tourists played in front of anyone was at Black Flag's legendary rehearsal space, The Church in Hermosa Beach. The older band gave The Tourists not only their seal of approval but a new name - Red Cross. The spelling was later changed to Redd Kross after the high school-age brothers received a cease and desist order from the International Red Cross.

 is produced by
The documentary has already filmed interviews with Jeff and Steve and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover (The Melvins) and original Red Cross member Greg Hetson (Bad Religion, Circle Jerks). With the help of the Kickstarter campaign the filmmakers will interview many other musicians and artists influenced by the seminal Redd Kross.

The high school-age McDonalds received a letter from the International Red Cross threatening legal action if they continued to use the name "Red Cross". Jeff's response was to change their name to "Redd Kross" in an homage to comedian Redd Foxx. With their new name, Redd Kross continued to evolve their sound. Their Neurotica record would prove to be one of the crucial influences on the Grunge scene in Seattle that changed music in the 1990's.
Redd Kross played a show at the Tacoma Ballroom in 1987 that was attended by the future members of NirvanaPearl Jam and Soundgarden. They proved that a band could have a heavy guitar attack and still have great pop melodies, an approach that Nirvana would take to world domination.
When pop music caught up to what they were doing and grunge was on the rise, Redd Kross pivoted again, making a sugary bubblegum record for their major label debut, Third Eye, which sported a nude Sofia Coppola on the cover. And while they had previously starred in the cult classics Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and Lovedolls Superstar, the 90's saw them star in their first studio movie. Before there was The Brady Bunch Movie, there was The Spirit of 76, a 70's nostalgia movie that saw Jeff and Steve starring alongside David CassidyLeif Garrett and Devo
Their next evolution had them perfecting a beefy power pop sound, with their records Phaseshifter and Show World. This was the phase that garnered them fans from Robert Plant to Joe Elliott of Def Leppard to Dave Davies of The Kinks.

Redd Kross has long been a cult band, a band's band, a secret code word among music fans that signifies taste and cool. But unlike many cult bands, their music is eminently accessible. If you like The Beatles or The Ramones or Cheap Trick, basically if you're a rock and roll fan, you'll like Redd Kross.

WHO WE ARE
INTERVIEWS WILL INCLUDE
We already have hours of interviews filmed with Jeff and Steve McDonald. We have also interviewed Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover (The Melvins) and original Red Cross member Greg Hetson (Bad Religion, Circle Jerks). With your support we hope to film additional interviews with most if not all of the following fans of the band and key figures in the Redd Kross story:
  • Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Off!)
  • Charlotte Caffey (The Go-Go's)
  • Rodney Bingenheimer (KROQ)
  • Mike Watt (The Minutemen)
  • Chuck Dukowski (Black Flag)
  • Pat Smear (The Germs, Nirvana)
  • Belinda Carlisle (The Go-Go's)
  • Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
  • Jonathan Poneman (Sub Pop Records)
  • Mark Arm (Mudhoney)
  • Kim Thayil (Soundgarden)

HOT CHIP Share "Bath Full of Ecstasy" Video, World Tour Kicks Off Tonight in NYC!

Unveil brilliant video for “Bath Full Of Ecstasy” – watch HERE
World tour kicking off tonight in NYC
Listen to remixes by KiNK and Adelphi Music Factory
“Bath Full Of Ecstasy” video still

Praise for Hot Chip + A Bath Full of Ecstasy:

"For almost twenty years, Hot Chip has been noodling away in weird musical corners, twisting off-kilter strains of synth-pop, disco, funk, and house into an eccentric yet electric body of work" - The New Yorker

"The band’s seventh is hedonistic and philosophical at the same time...Hot Chip have always made songs that slip between the erotic and and neurotic, but this time out there’s another level, as the tracks slip sideways to comment on our upside down world." - Rolling Stone

“...another strong entry...compulsively listenable, oddly moving, and stranger than it first appears"
Pitchfork

"They are brimming with earnestness and A Bath Full of Ecstasy makes that abundantly clear. This album is perhaps the definitive release, representing a true honing of sound, style and craft." - Tidal

"U.K. quintet Hot Chip perfectly bridges the worlds of indie and electronic on A Bath Full of Ecstasy...Part neon rave, part hipster dive bar, Bath is essential listening for dance fans who enjoy a human touch atop pulsing electronic beats." - Billboard

“...there’s probably never been an iteration of this band that’s been quite so euphoric, trippy, and lush at once. It might just be the best iteration of Hot Chip yet." - Stereogum

"They have been put on this planet to create beautiful, awe-inspiring packages of synth pop and alternative dance, a charge that A Bath Full of Ecstasy more than delivers on." - Under The Radar

"In the 15 years since their first album, Hot Chip have grown from their quirky roots into a highly consistent band with a strong, romantic sense of songwriting and ever-inventive, danceable production that continues to evolve." - Brooklyn Vegan

"The album distills everything great about Hot Chip—whimsical vocals, fluid synths and exhilarating rhythms—and contains just as much of a towering emotional sway and festival-ready sound...Hot Chip have proved their ability to satisfy the human desire for the rhythms we can’t resist, but they also deliver a level of wisdom often lacking in dance music." - Paste Magazine

Following the release of their fantastic new album A Bath Full Of Ecstasy in June, Hot Chiphave spent the summer delighting festival audiences across the globe with their multi-colored electronic pop rhythms. As the five-piece embark on the North American leg of their world tour, they are pleased to unveil the “game review” video for “Bath Full Of Ecstasy."

Watch the video for “Bath Full Of Ecstasy” HERE

The band say about the new video: “Oliver Payne (Safecrackers) is a British born, Los Angeles-based visual artist, video and film-maker, friend of the band, and collaborator. His artwork was used on two of Alexis’ album sleeves and he is also a huge supporter and fan of Hot Chip. Oliver came up with the idea to make a video based around a fictional computer game called ‘Bath Full of Ecstasy’, in the Hot Chip series, from Japan, circa 1988. The video consists of a Youtube-style review and demonstration of the game, which features each band member on their path to save the cursed kingdom, aiming to return melody and color, and bringing back joy, with the help of the Bubblebath Fairy, a Microphone and some friendly strangers.”
“Bath Full Of Ecstasy” video still

Additionally, the band shared remixes of album tracks by KiNK and Adelphi Music Factory over the summer.
