Harmony of Difference premiered as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art 2017 Biennial alongside a film by Rojas and also featuring artwork by Kamasi Washington’s sister, Amani Washington. The new music is an original six part suite that explores the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as “counterpoint,” which Washington defines as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies.” Beyond the artistic impulse to expand the possibilities within counterpoint, Washington wanted to create something that opened people’s minds to the gift of diversity.
Each of the first five movements is its own unique composition. “Truth,” the sixth movement, fuses all five compositions into one simultaneous performance.  Echoing this fusion, Amani created five paintings focused on raw shapes and colors, each inspired by one of the first five movements of the suite. Amani then combined these paintings to create a sixth: an abstract depiction of a human face.
The film, directed by A.G. Rojas, brings the metaphoric ideas found in both the music and paintings to life. While still quite abstract, it focuses on the harmony found in people from South Central and East Los Angeles and shows the beauty in their differences.
Harmony Of Difference will be available on all digital services, as well as on 12” vinyl with a 14-page concertina booklet featuring original artwork by Amani Washington and still images from the film by A.G. Rojas on September 29. It is available to pre-order via http://y-t-r.co/harmonyofdifference
“My hope is that witnessing the beautiful harmony created by merging different musical melodies will help people realize the beauty in our own differences.”—Kamasi Washington

The National - "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" single is #1 on

THE NATIONAL'S LEAD SINGLE
"THE SYSTEM ONLY DREAMS IN TOTAL DARKNESS" HITS #1 ON TRIPLE-A CHART

SINGLE OFF FORTHCOMING NEW ALBUM
SLEEP WELL BEAST OUT SEPTEMBER 8 VIA 4AD

Congratulations to The National whose single, " The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" has claimed the #1 spot on the BDS Triple-A radio chart.  This marks the band's first #1 at commercial radio.  "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness" is off The National's forthcoming album Sleep Well Beast which is set to be released on September 8 via 4AD.   As with the entire album, the single was produced by member Aaron Dessner with co-production by Bryce Dessner and Matt Berninger.  Sleep Well Beast was mixed by Peter Katis and recorded at Aaron Dessner's Hudson Valley, New York studio, Long Pond.  Sleep Well Beast is available for pre-order and will be available in CD, digital and double LP formats.

Watch "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness," in this Casey Reas directedvideo.

"'The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness' blends elements of the National's signature indie rock anthems with a shot of disco funk. A shuffling drum beat and a grimy guitar loop mix with a slow-burning blend of piano, synths and horns that rise at the end..." - Rolling Stone

"the National re-emerges upbeat, verging on danceable, with 'The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness,' a plaint about lost intimacy delivered with a kicking drumbeat, an insistent distorted guitar lick and a strobing video clip. The band hasn't set aside its fondness for Minimalism; there's lots of repetition in the underlying arrangement. But this time the National is willing to swing."   -The New York Times

"Produced by Aaron Dessner 'System' has a sound that's sharper than on The National's past two albums - more propulsive than dense - and it gleams and shudders with nervous bravado." - NPR

"Here, they all sound more energized, jutting forward with a slick confidence." -Pitchfork (Best New Track)

"No matter what Matt's singing about here it sounds good, and "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" is a pleasant omen for whatever other uncommon amalgamations might come next on Sleep Well Beast." - Spin

The National have confirmed a world-tour in support of  Sleep Well Beast.  Dates kick off  in Cork, Ireland on September 16.  Highlights include Forest Hills Stadium in New York on October 6, The Hollywood Bowl on October 11 and multiple night residencies in more than 10 cities across Europe and North America.  In advance of the tour The National have played Glastonbury ("Could The National Be Glastonbury's Next Headliners?" said the NME review) and the upcoming Haven Festival in Copenhagen. One of Norway’s most acclaimed, influential and vital artists, Hanne Hukkelberg ends a five-year absence with new album ‘Trust’ – out October 20 via Propeller Recordings. Featuring back-to-back singles ‘The Whip’ and ‘IRL’, the new album explores the duality of human life in the digital age – largely inspired by writers, scientists and philosophers including George Orwell, Zygmunt Bauman, Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Yuval Noah Harari and Simon Sinek, alongside the more pop-cultured forecasts of sci-fi series Westworld and Black Mirror.

“The album is a combination of personal experience and a wider observation of society and how I feel people are living their lives,” Hukkelberg says. “The Internet and social media have such an impact on my life, and I’m often made aware of how addicted I am to this 'digital beast’. How can something that is not part of our basic nature be so consuming?”
Beneath the doom, dread and data lies a glimmer of hope – of ‘Trust’ – turning Hukkelberg’s dystopian drone into more of an empowered plea for society. “Trust is something that will never expire, it’s a quality that we’ll retain in both real and virtual life.”
’Trust’ joins Hukkelberg’s nationally adored and internationally acclaimed back catalogue, including‘Blood From A Stone’ (2009), Norwegian Grammy Award-winning LP ‘Rykestrasse 68’ (2006) and breakthrough debut ‘Little Things’ (2004). Spanning more than a decade, her career is celebrated by the likes of Pitchfork, BBC, KCRWThe Guardian, Metro, Uncut, The QuietusClash and Drowned In Sound
