Recorded in a Tacoma, Washington warehouse, Sonic Bloom
is an explosion of reverb soaked rock and soul blended with sharp drone

psychic groove of 'Seven Poison Wonders' to the sparse Zombies
influenced 'Playing Dead' to the squealing ruckus of 'Rat King', Sonic Bloom harkens back to the outer corners of rock and roll radio of yore.

Jake Bellows is set to release his debut solo album New Ocean on August 6 via Saddle Creek. In anticipation of the release, SPIN is running an exclusive album stream a week before the street date. New Ocean was recorded at Omaha's ARC Studios with engineer Ben Brodin (Before the Toast and Tea, Conor Oberst), Ryan Fox (The Good Life), Todd Fink (The Faint), and Heath Koontz (Neva Dinova). New Ocean is now available for pre-order on CD & LP via Saddle Creek and limited edition cassette through Majestic Litter.
Jake Bellows had quit music. Or so he thought.
After fronting Neva Dinova
for more than 15 years, which included five full-lengths, a split EP,
and countless tours, he packed up his dog and moved from his native
Omaha to his girlfriend's hometown of Los Angeles. Two days before he
left he recorded 18 demos with musician and engineer Ben Brodin at
Brodin's insistence. Once in L.A., Bellows got a job installing
sliding-glass doors and sold his Les Paul to buy a Datsun pick-up truck.
Though he had no plans to form a new band, he played the occasional solo show, performed with Whispertown,
and continued to write songs. In early 2011, an invitation arrived from
Omaha's Film Streams Theater for Jake's old friend Ryan Fox also living
on the West Coast, to perform an original live film-score. Fox enlisted
Bellows and Brodin to collaborate and the trio began to compose and
discuss improvisational ideas over long-distance. Since they were all
going to be in Omaha and had a long history of playing in each other's
bands, Brodin and Fox nudged Bellows into booking studio time to record
some of his dormant songs.
Fox
and Bellows drove from LA to Omaha that November. They entered ARC
Studios for a feverish recording session, arranging and writing parts
on the fly with an impromptu band including Heath Koontz, Todd Fink,
Whispertown bandmate Morgan Nagler and other old friends. Committing
quickly to intuitive arrangements the band recorded 17 tracks in a
little more than a week. They worked remotely on the record throughout
that winter and spring, adding overdubs in basements and bedrooms
across western North America.
The
new music is underpinned by philosophical conviction and shaped by an
interest in physics, cosmology and mythology. Bellows returned to music
with a renewed sense of the intrinsic value of art and its ability to
express the commonality of human experience. His debut full-length, New Ocean,
offers a mix tape of different kinds of songs hanging out on one record
- love songs that are not necessarily ballads despite their
introspective gauziness, with left turns into drunk-in-the-sun bossa
nova and blue-eyed-soul ruptured by fuzz guitar. Bellows believes that
songs change the fabric of the universe through the very frequencies
they emit. As such, the record attempts to create the world he wants to
see instead of reflect the world that is.

Crystal
Antlers have just announced a new single, "Rattlesnake," as well as
news of their signing to Los Angeles-based label Innovative Leisure,
home to projects like Classixx, Rhye and Bass Drum of Death.
The track can be heard on Pitchfork now. "Rattlesnake" is out digitally today, and will be available on a picture disc, with the B-side "California", on September 24th via Innovative Leisure.
Lead
singer and bassist Jonny Bell started as a musician and in the process
has become a producer, an engineer, a tour manager, a booker, a
promoter, a record label, a distributor and more. In regards to the
forthcoming album, Nothing Is Real, which will be out in the
fall, he’s looking forward to this opportunity to be a musician again:
“We had to learn everything the hard way,” says Bell. “It’s great
putting out records on your own, but it’s also a huge investment of
time, which we’d rather focus on writing, playing shows and recording.
I want to play music, not run a business. Every time I step into the
studio, I come up with something new—there’s work to be done.”
"Rattlesnake"
is merely the start of an exciting 2013 for the Long Beach-based band,
who will be playing FYF Fest this August and announcing more details
shortly on a brand new full length record and extensive North American
tour.

"Merging
psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences, the group
easily maintains consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned
to any specific movement or trend." Pitchfork
"They're at the point where comparisons do little justice. They're just Crystal Antlers now." Los Angeles Times
"[Crystal
Antlers] make punk-ignited, psych-influenced, soul-fueled garage
rock...not just rioting but inspiring, living up to their impressive
promise." The Guardian
"Art-garage whiplash at its finest." Stereogum
"A baker’s dozen fuzzed, sweaty, and swinging psychedelic, expansive, and noisy garage rock" AV Club
"Crystal
Antlers aren’t really about making some shit we’ve heard before, but
they do take notice of some important touchstones: powerful organ runs,
ragged vocals and an ability to turn even relatively short songs into
something that sounds beyond epic." THE FADER
"It's hard not to admire these out-there dudes." NME
"Fueled by the aggression and intensity that Jonny Bell and Crystal Antlers brandish so effortlessly." Filter Magazine

Track by track description by Hugh Cornwell:
TOTEM AND TABOO
Strangely
enough this was the last track I wrote for the album, but it's become
one of my favourites. A hint of 'Rebel, Rebel' with some Marc Bolan
glam thrown in. I've always liked songs with the marching 4's on the
snare, and that's what it is supposed to be, a rallying call for
like-minded souls. I was playing this live most of last year so it went
down easily enough in the studio.
THE FACE
My
favourite guitar bits on the album. I was stretched a bit to keep the
solo going for that long, but Steve Albini liked it, which is praise
indeed. Based on a funny story about Madonna.
I WANT ONE OF THOSE
I
was very excited when I wrote this. After the melody came together I
went for a walk in the country and wrote the lyric whilst I was walking
in my head. Had to rush back to write it all down before I forgot it!
We've all become slaves to a consumer society and its spread into all
aspects of our lives unfortunately.
STUCK IN DAILY MAIL LAND
Conceived
in a hotel in the Midlands about 5 years ago, over breakfast, alone,
over a copy of - of course - the Daily Mail. Not that it's an attack on
it; some of my best friends read it.
BAD VIBRATIONS
People
who are familiar with what I've done over the years will be familiar
with a habit I have of appropriating titles and changing them
perversely to my own evil ends. 'Good Vibrations' is a classic pop song
from the 60's that needed to be backdoored.
GOD IS A WOMAN
Probably
my favourite track on the album. First few notes may remind some people
of 'Badge', but I think this is an improvement. The voice is unusually
very dry and in your ear, in contrast to the bass and guitar. Hopefully
people will consider, as I do, that this is a modern day 'Peaches'.
LOVE ME SLENDER
Another
one of my favourites. It would take too long to go into what it's
about. But it is another misappropriation, this time from Presley's
'Love Me Tender' of course.
GODS GUNS AND GAYS
A
song about the United States of America and the obsessions you find
there. The word 'gays' is only meant to represent the power of Freedom
Of Speech they enjoy in that wonderful country of contradictions. No
wonder so many of the Surrealists flocked there in the 1930's. Another
one of my tributes to Arthur Lee and his band Love, God rest his soul.
Amen.
A STREET CALLED CARROLL
Los
Angeles. Silverlake. Overlooking downtown. A street called Carroll. The
most unusual wooden houses. It's where they shot the 'Thriller' video.
Quite enigmatic. Not at all what you'd expect in LA. On a hill. Old
style street lamps. Not quite sure what it's got to do with Totem &
Taboo, but it was the time when the whole idea of the album became
clear to me.
IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT
I
thought it was about time to write a long epic track, rather like we
used to do when I was in The Stranglers. It had to be at the end of the
album, and I wanted it to feature an extra instrument, rather like
'Banging On At The Same Old Beat' did on 'Hooverdam', my last album.
Steve (bass & keyboards) obliged perfectly, bless him. Bass riff
came to me in the middle of the night and sat around for a while before
I realised what was going on.
"His gnarliest record in over 30 years....Hugh and Steve: a marriage madeinblack." MOJO
“Thanks
to a gloriously raw and vibrant sound, courtesy of the ever reliable
Steve Albini, Cornwell’s endearingly sardonic observations on freedom,
consumerism and Madonna Louise Ciccone crackle with energy. He sounds
more engaged and intense than he has in years. It ends with the
menacing sprawl of ‘In The Dead Of Night’ Cornwell’s finest and most
unashamedly epic moment since the Punk Era”

Going Underground: Paul McCartney, the Beatles, and the UK Counterculture
In
the mid-1960s the often rigid and colourless British way of life was
irrevocably transformed by the emergence of a cultural underground
movement. Led by a loose collective of young radicals, they introduced
new social, sexual and aesthetic perspectives. Operating out of the
heart of London, their various activities, from 'The International
Times' - a bi-weekly journal that no hipster could be seen without -
to the psychedelic nightclub UFO, promoted alternative lifestyles and
values, and sparked a social revolution.
This
film not only traces the history of this underground scene, but also
explores its impact on the pre-eminent British group of the era, The
Beatles. Although they were well established by the time the movement
emerged, Paul McCartney in particular, was closely linked with several
of its key players, and through his exposure to cutting edge concepts
brought ideas directly from the avant-garde into the mainstream.
Featuring many new interviews with key players from the time including; IT editor and long term friend of Paul McCartney, Barry Miles; founder of IT and UFO club organiser, John 'Hoppy' Hopkins; founder of UFO and Pink Floyd producer , Joe Boyd; Soft Machine drummer, Robert Wyatt; drummer from experimental improvisational collective AMM, Eddie Prevost; proprietor of Indica, the counter-cultural gallery, John Dunbar; Underground scenester, vocalist with The Deviants and IT journalist, Mick Farren; plus author of 'Days in the Life: Voices from the English Underground 1961 - 1971', Jonathon Greene; Beatles expert, Chris Ingham and Mojo jounalist Mark Paytress.
Also
includesrare archive footage, photographs from private collections and
music from The Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Soft Machine, AMM and others.
