Stay Human is all about finding ways to hold on to our humanity during challenging times like the ones we are living in today,” Franti explains. “I could not be more excited or grateful to be working with the inspiring team at Cinedigm, championing this message through the release of the film, in a time when it’s needed more than ever!”
“It is a rare and exciting opportunity to release the work of esteemed artist and filmmaker Michael Franti,” adds Yolanda Macias, Cinedigm’s Executive Vice-President of Acquisitions. “We are proud to distribute this touching documentary that draws inspiration from humankind across the world. Franti recently made a series of special intimate appearances throughout the western U.S. at screenings of Stay Human, with each screening featuring an introduction by and Q&A with Franti as well as an acoustic performance by Franti accompanied by Carl Young (bass, vocals) and Victoria Canal (keys, vocals). Watch/share the trailer for Stay Human at https://youtu.be/NaQu7n4NA6s.
The digital release of the Stay Human film coincides with the release of Franti’s new album with his band SpearheadStay Human Vol. II, via Thirty Tigers also on January 25.
Billboard previously premiered the video for the lead single “Just To Say I Love You” athttps://bit.ly/2QujiNb. Pre-orders of the album come with instant downloads of the album tracks “Just To Say I Love You,” “Stay Human 2,” “Flower In The Gun” (feat. Victoria Canal) and “Nobody Cries Alone” and are available at https://ffm.to/stayhumanvol2.
The writing on Stay Human Vol. II—which is co-produced by Franti alongside Ben Simonetti(Zac Brown Band, Shemekia Copeland, Blake Shelton), Niko Moon (Zac Brown Band), Kevin Bard (Fitz & The Tantrums) and others—was heavily influenced by Franti’s work on the film.
Franti began writing music as a way to process both the political landscape of the late 1980s and the unique sounds and ideas of his Bay Area upbringing. In 1994, Franti formed Michael Franti & Spearhead. Touring with his band, Franti continued to notice inequality and injustice both at home and abroad. The band released their seminal Stay Human album in 2000, reflecting on the unjust nature of the death penalty among other themes, to make sense of our common humanity in juxtaposition to near constant violations of human rights.
Franti released his first self-directed documentary, I Know I’m Not Alone, in 2005 to widespread critical acclaim. The film depicts his mission for peace in the Middle East, with a focus on the human cost of war. Franti visited war zones in Iraq, Israel and Palestine again finding common connection, playing music to both soldiers and civilians regardless of affiliation.
Michael Franti & Spearhead continue to foster the community both on and off stage and with Michael and his wife Sara’s foundation Do It For The Love, a wish granting nonprofit that brings those with life threatening illnesses, veterans and children with severe challenges to concerts. His recent musical projects have included the Billboard #1 single “The Sound of Sunshine” (2010) and full-length releases All the People (2013) and SOULROCKER (2016), which topped the Billboard rock album charts at #4 and #5, respectively.

Sophie Strauss Reclaims Power Over Her Femininity With Her New Album Hard Study Out Today!

Sophie Strauss

Releases New Album,

Hard Study,

An Unapologetic Redemption For Femininity

LA native Sophie Strauss reclaims power over her identity, femininity, and toxic masculinity with her debut album, Hard Study, out today! Strauss is solidifying her narrative of being a shameless woman in a male-dominated world. She is honest, pure, and unapologetic.

The album begins with a melodic whimper drawn out of the 2016 Presidential election. “Drive Down, Mama” is the compilation of Strauss’s emotions: the frustration, the sadness, and the fear of the oncoming, uncertain shift in politics. It’s an eerie prelude for a pop album, using Strauss’s smoky, rigid vocals over intricate instrumentals. “Drive Down Mama” isn’t the calm before the storm, but the moment during when it breaks for only a second. And you know it’s only just begun.

Strauss plays with her dyads. Delicate, yet harsh. Lush, yet rigid. Womanhood, in
Strauss’s opinion, isn’t the sacrifice of either. Strauss and her music revel in the juxtaposition of being both. As fearless as she is vulnerable, Strauss has manifested femininity in its many contradictions and the acceptance of it all.

As a pop artist, Strauss doesn’t shy from singing love songs. But they aren’t traditional love songs. “Aphids” is a song that rejects forgiving male violence and dominance. Strauss doesn’t soften or romanticise these men, but tells them bluntly, “You hit me and it felt like shit.” Her song “Dog Fight” is the rejection of the dreamgirl image that too many men project onto their lovers. Knowing she’s going to disappoint these men, Strauss doesn’t care and she’s not looking to stop pursuing it either. Choosing for her own pleasure and gain is Strauss’s redemption against submission.

Hard Study is an exploration of all the spaces in between the headlines of what we’re told it should mean to be a woman. It isn’t always confident and fearless, it’s honest. In “I Was,” Strauss is a young girl compromised by her romantic feelings towards one of her friends. The song is juvenile and reflective, the memories of youth with the edge of adulthood realization. “It’s about being so close to your girl friends, feeling like sisters or maybe you’re in love with them or maybe you’re not but the intimacy of being a kid and the way you play together is so tender and charged...It’s really hard to parse out where platonic feelings ended and romantic ones began,” Strauss said.

If one thing is clear with Hard Studyit’s that Strauss knows herself. She knows who she is as a modern, queer woman and what that means in today’s ever-politicised world. Strauss goes deep into the nooks and crannies of toxic masculinity, finding the little places we forget it exists, even thrives, and exposes them. But in the end, Hard Study isn’t ever really about men at all; it’s a love letter to the women existing despite them.

Carlie Hanson Releases New Single "Numb"

CARLIE HANSON RELEASES NEW SINGLE "NUMB"

DEBUT EP ARRIVING IN 2019
"It's explicitly honest and shapeshifting pop for your nerves."
- PAPER MAGAZINE

"Pop's next teen phenom is here."
- L'OFFICIEL

""A ridiculously talented teen who just won't stop with the A-grade bops." - THE INTERNS

LOS ANGELES, CA - December 14, 2018 - Rising pop star Carlie Hanson has released her new song "Numb" today. Co-written by Carlie herself, the track showcases a darker tone for the singer-songwriter that is amplified by moody instrumentals and glitchy trap percussion. "Numb" marks the second single off of her forthcoming debut EP, due for release next year. Listen to it now HERE.

"Numb is one of the grittiest songs I've written and definitely the darkest song I've released so far," Carlie said about the track. "I wrote it about the juxtaposition of being really drawn to someone but still wanting to stay completely detached from them."
Carlie has captivated audiences across North America with her infectious live presence. After performing at several notable US festivals this summer including Bumbershoot in Seattle and Summerfest in Milwaukee, she drew rave reviews on tours with pop sensation Troye Sivan and Jeremy Zucker this fall. Keeping the momentum going into 2019, Carlie will join Gnash for several dates on his upcoming "Broken Hearts Club Tour" next month before heading to Europe and the UK for a winter run with Yungblud. For a complete list of dates, please see below.

In under two years, 18-year old Carlie Hanson has made her way from working at a McDonalds drive thru in a small Wisconsin town to becoming a full-fledged artist and songwriter that has graced the pages of iconic fashion magazines CR Fashion Book and Remix Magazine. She has self-released five vibrant breakout tracks which have a collective 60 million-plus streams to-date. She released her most recent single "Toxins" earlier this fall, giving fans the first taste from her highly anticipated debut EP. Her smash hit "Only One" is prominently featured on Apple Music's A-List Pop Playlist as well as an Apple Music Playlist curated by Taylor Swift and Spotify's Today's Top Hits. Listen to it now HERE.

Detroit Cobras release new 7" on Third Man Records

DETROIT COBRAS RELEASE FIRST NEW MUSIC
OUT TODAY ON THIRD MAN RECORDS

Today, Detroit Cobras are delivering "What More" b/w "I Can't Go Back," a 7" featuring two covers of soul rarities. The 7", their first release since 2008's "Ya Ya Ya (Looking For My Baby)" b/w "As Long As I Have You," is now available to stream and purchase HERE. Fresh off a tour with the MC50, the Cobras were inspired to judiciously cherry-pick two soul rarities to record and press 'em hot in Detroit! The familiar sounds of Rachel Nagy's sultry vocals and Mary Ramirez's garagey guitar backed by a solid crew of veteran Detroit players -- Dale Wilson, Eddie Baranek, and Kenny Tudrick -- help to retool these vintage jams.

"What More" is an uptempo, rug-cutting gem penned by Z.Z. Hill that gets a newly realized guitar crunch intro. In classic Detroit Cobras flip-the-script style, Rachel begs the question, "What more can I do?," while "I Can't Go Back" is a soulful, smooth and haunting ballad about lost love.
