She got pregnant and three weeks later they had what my father describes as “a shotgun wedding where we were both pointing shotguns at ourselves”. He told me to listen to The River, by Bruce Springsteen, to understand what it felt like for him at that time. Here is my version of The River, interwoven with my parents’ “love” story…or lack thereof." Built from a collage of voice memos, Zoom recordings, song demos, and fully realized studio sessions, The Brothel: A Musical Memoir serves as a gift to MuMu's younger self. Throughout the project, she asks the questions she was once too confused, angry, and afraid to voice, ultimately arriving at a place of empathy, understanding, and forgiveness for both of her parents—and herself. Making this album was an effort to understand how things happened, what effect my parents’ relationship had on the relationship I have with myself. After a career of telling other people's stories, she made the shift to telling her own. MuMu grew up in a matriarchy, with five sisters and a mom sharing a one-bathroom apartment. With that upbringing, MuMu has a special focus on the female experience and uses this upbringing as creative fuel. MuMu made her debut in 2018 with the powerful single "Free The Nip", a feminist anthem that addresses the censorship of the female body. The accompanying music video quickly went viral, amassing nearly 2 million views on YouTube, and the song became a show-closing staple at various Pride events and festivals where MuMu performed with renowned artists such as Pussy Riot and Todrick Hall. "Free The Nip" continues to garner attention, recently licensed for the Netflix animated series Big Mouth (S6:E2). Since her debut, MuMu has been featured in The New York Times, Variety, IndieWire, and The Hollywood Reporter, and she received critical acclaim for her work in the groundbreaking musical film Best Summer Ever.
