Watch TOY's new video for It's Been So Long
Dir. Douglas Hart
Fresh off their debut North American tour TOY unfurl the new video for It's Been So Long, taken from their second album Join The Dots released early this year on Heavenly Recordings and directed by Jesus And Mary Chain's Douglas Hart.
"The video for TOY's It's Been So Long features calibration charts used for everything from testing focus on microscopes and optical movie projectors to the calibration of cathode rays and the accuracy of the US Army Air Force's bomb and gun sights. The video also includes colour reference charts which instruct technicians as to the true nature of black, white and the three primary colours which combine and overlap within optical devices to create every imaginable colour and shade. Often these charts include strange symbols mapped out in mysterious lines, spirals, and solid shapes, some of which look like they belong on the pages of a New Orleans Voodoo curse, or on an Op Art canvas." - Douglas Hart
TOY are: Tom Dougall (vocals / guitar), Dominic O'Dair (guitars), Maxim Barron (bass / vocals),Alejandra Diez (synths / modulations) & Charlie Salvidge (drums / vocals).

Boston-based singer Marissa Nadler is streaming her new full-length album, July, this week, exclusively at NPR First Listen. The album, set for release February 4th on Sacred Bones (US) and February 10th on Bella Union (ROW), will be celebrated with a special performance in Brooklyn onSaturday, February 8th at Glasslands. After being one of the first artists to perform at Rough Trade's new Brooklyn space this past November, Nadler is embarking on a national tour behind July.Dates below.
Recorded at Seattle's Avast Studio, the album pairs Nadler for the first time with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room). Dunn matches Nadler's darkness by creating a multi-colored sonic palette that infuses new dimensions into her songs. Eyvind Kang's strings, Steve Moore's synths, and Phil Wandscher's guitar lines escalate the whole affair to a panoramic level of beautiful, eerie wonder.
July follows Nadler's critically acclaimed 2011 self-titled LP, which she released independently through a successful Kickstarter campaign, selling her own handmade albums (as well as a highly-circulated 'Covers' series) through Etsy. Following several albums on Kemado, her DIY venture earned her SPIN 'Best New Artist,' Vogue 'Artist To Watch,' KEXP, NPR 'World Cafe: Next,'and NPR 'First Listen' accolades, while Pitchfork gave it an "Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention."
Recently collaborating with Angel Olsen and Xasthur, among others, July is the kind of release that reminds you why NPR counts Nadler's songwriting as so "revered among an assortment of tastemakers." This is a singular achievement for the artist, a record she couldn't have made earlier in her career because, as every songwriter knows, she didn't just write these songs: She lived them.

Albert Hammond, Jr.'s "Strange Tidings" video premieres 1/27
VIDEO FOR ALBERT HAMMOND, JR.’S “STRANGE TIDINGS” SET TO PREMIERE ON VEVO JANUARY 27, TEASER STREAMING NOW
ON TOUR NOW WITH JAKE BUGG
AHJ OUT NOW, VINYL AVAILABLE IN STORES
FROM JANUARY 27
CRITICS CONTINUE TO HAIL AHJ
“Taut, razor’s edge rock riffs with miles of emotion beneath the metered minimalism…”
—The New York Times
“[Hammond, Jr.] sounds fully recharged…howling his best vocals ever over stuttering,
futuristic riffs of ‘St. Justice,’ the manic grooves of ‘Rude Customer’
and the anthemic ‘Cooker Ship.’”—Rolling Stone
“Tight, snappy, emotionally direct songcraft…[Hammond, Jr.] brings a convincing
poignancy and urgency.”—Pitchfork
“Classic Albert: nimble, instantly memorable…makes our heart hurt a little.”—Noisey
“Rife with incessant high-range guitar work, mechanistic rhythms and
shrugging, swaggering vocals.”—Stereogum
Vevo is premiering the video for Albert Hammond, Jr.’s “Strange Tidings” on January 27. The new video is the third from his acclaimed AHJ EP, out now on Cult Records. A teaser for the video is available via Cult Records (http://bit.ly/StrangeTidingsTeaser). The video was shot in Paris with director Laurent Briet during Hammond, Jr.’s recent European tour.
Hammond, Jr. is currently on tour with English rocker Jake Bugg following solo U.S. and European tours including a sold-out U.K. run. The string of live dates celebrates Hammond, Jr.’s new EP, praised by The Hollywood Reporter as “…easily Hammond, Jr.’s best solo work to date.” The EP will be available on vinyl in stores from January 27.
AHJ premiered streaming in its entirety on Rolling Stone (http://rol.st/16JSvnw), while track “Rude Customer” premiered on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record in The World. Hammond, Jr. recently performed “St. Justice” on the “Late Show with David Letterman” (http://bit.ly/1gWg5OK).
The video for first single “St. Justice” premiered on Noisey (http://bit.ly/1aRMBw1), while the video for track “Carnal Cruise” premiered on Complex (http://bit.ly/JaV7jZ).
The new EP follows Hammond, Jr.’s previous solo efforts, 2006’s Yours to Keep, which NME called “…an intimate, frequently beautiful and consistently surprising record that gets better with every listen,” and 2008’s¿Cómo Te Llama?. Of the new EP’s relationship with his earlier releases, Hammond, Jr. says, “It’s a combination of both previous recordings, which in turn makes it feel like it’s the best material that I’ve made so far.”
AHJ was produced, engineered and mixed by Grammy-winning producer Gus Oberg and recorded at Hammond, Jr.’s two studios, Broome Street in Manhattan and One Way Studios in upstate New York. Of working with Oberg, Hammond, Jr. says “I’ve been working with him since my first solo project, after we met and became best friends. We get along and we understand each other musically, so everything just flows.” Hammond, Jr. played all of the instruments on the EP himself, excluding drums on several tracks, which were played by longtime collaborator Matthew Frank Romano.
Since the release of ¿Cómo Te Llama?, Hammond, Jr. has released two critically acclaimed albums with The Strokes, 2011’s Angles and this year’s Comedown Machine. Of his inspirations for AHJ, Hammond, Jr. said, “Once you play music for a living, you’re always thinking about stuff. Conversations with friends and things you hear in movies—things come up and become lyrics. Hearing other people’s songs becomes like competition—you hear something and mentally you want to beat it. Life in general is pretty inspiring.”
Cult Records is helmed by Julian Casablancas. In addition to Albert Hammond, Jr., releases include Cerebral Ballzy, Exclamation Pony, Rey Pila, Reputante and more.

About the record:
Like a fluorescent-lit snack-aisle oasis in some desolate interstate road stop, brimming with Skittles and limited-edition Sno Balls, Tacocat's Easter-egg-hued pop-punk-pop is bubblegum-sticky with hooks, bound to brighten up the most drab stretch of bummer backroad.
The band's four-person, seven-layer-burrito came together organically: Lelah Maupin (drums) and Eric Randall (guitar) met in their native Longview, WA—two hours south of Seattle, the very town that Green Day named their breakout debut single after. Lelah's family room was wallpapered with framed Magic Eye posters, hence "Stereogram," the cross-eyed love letter to that bizarre ‘90s optical fad. She met lanky Eric while both worked at Safeway, wearing the chain's distinctive navy aprons before breaking north to Seattle. Eric's band The Trashies practiced and played in the basement of the 24/7 House in the Central District, where Long Beach, CA native Bree McKenna (bass) was living, amongst the dust, boxes, and spiders. Lelah met Butte, MT native Emily Nokes (voice, tambourine) in one excruciatingly early/boring graphic design class, slipping her a doodled-upon note; she soon noticed Emily's big voice while she sang along with R. Kelly on the radio. Emily and Bree hit it off one sloshy night at the Comet. Eric impressed Emily with his reenactments of scenes from Anaconda. Sometime around 2007, via countless raucous house party shows, the legend of Tacocat was born.
The foursome would quickly make a name for themselves with their simply energizing power pop, drawing on classic Northwest energy with an uncommonly upbeat, surfy swag that could only come from gray skies and hydroponic sunshine. Their sly and unabashed ‘90s revivalism has, in the past, found the band pondering Evan Dando and Waterworld—and Bree herself explains finding about riot grrrl via Napster and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You. They've described themselves variously as "Feminist sci-fi" and "Equal parts Kurt and Courtney"; oh well, whatever…NVM

NYC SHOWS
Jan 29th - Mercury Lounge
Jan 31st - Rough Trade NYC
One of the Most Anticipated Albums of 2014 -eMusic, FILTER, SPIN, and NME
"Visceral joy of loud, distorted guitars" -New York Times
"One of our favorite discoveries from CMJ" -NPR
Since forming in 2009, Leeds-based Eagulls have become synonymous with a discontented, disillusioned kind of anger, molded into bullets of post punk that's rife with urgency and aggression.
Brought together by drummer Henry Ruddell and guitarist Mark 'Goldy' Goldsworthy, they were later joined by friends Liam Matthews on guitar and Tom Kelly on bass. After struggling to find a singer that fitted with their vision for the band, they roped in George Mitchell to be their frontman without ever having heard him sing before.
For a band like Eagulls, touring is their lifeblood, as shown through the relentless bouts of gigging that have colored their four years together, in between working tedious day jobs in the bars and retail outlets of Leeds together. Booking support slots with the likes of Iceage, Merchandise, Parquet Courts, and Fucked Up they've carved out a reputation for chaotic and confrontational live shows.
Now, following further standalone releases, their self-titled debut album is complete and slated for release on March 4, 2014. Finessing the incensed spirit of their early tracks and gigs, it sets its stall out as a heavier, darker and more exhilarating step on from what's come before. "Nerve Endings," opening track and first taste of the record, encapsulates that in throbbing bass and George hollering "can't find my end" whilst "Fester-Blister" provides an anthemic streak cutting through a wall of frenetic noise. "Tough Luck" takes inspiration from outside the punk pool associated with Eagulls, boasting a rumbling Joy Division-esque bassline. It all ends on the searing rush of "Soulless Youth," which finds George declaring "I never feel fine/They're soulless inside... the soulless youth," with enough bile to make it clear just how he feels about his generation.
"We're all more pessimistic, more jaded, more cynical," explains Goldy of the band's moodier shift. "When you finish uni, you've got optimism and you think everything's going to be alright. You think you'll just take a shit job in a shop and you'll only have to do it for a while but then you're still there a year later..."
It's this frustration and sardonicism that fuels Eagulls and lights a match under their first LP. Though they admit to there being "lighter moments" on the record, on the whole it's a gloomy, overcast affair. Influenced by post-punk and shoegaze (primarily the sonic assaults of My Bloody Valentine) combined with their own background in hardcore bands, it follows their first trip to America earlier this year for SXSW (a trip the band sacked in their jobs to take) - the catalyst for their signing to US indie label Partisan.
With the record now complete and ready for release, expect their own unique brand of mayhem to be lighting up venues around the country as they return to their natural environment of the road to reinforce their abrasive brilliant reputation once more.
