DIIV announces new album 'ZIRP!' and shares new single “The Fountain”

Alongside the announcement of ZIRP!, DIIV shares the lead single “The Fountain.” Recently, DIIV sat with Zane Lowe to discuss the new single and ZIRP!  This is The New Alternative: a new genre for the 21st century. More specifically: a new genre for music’s optimized VC-funded super deluxe remixed AI-enhanced algorithmically perfected wild west 2020s, where a million streams is great, a billion even better, and a trillion well within reach. On their fifth album ZIRP!, DIIV emphatically and ecstatically embrace the underground pedigree and the pop instinct that have anchored the band like magnetic poles for the better part of their career—smashing them together in pursuit of a sound that pre-empts any notion that Zachary Cole Smith, Andrew Bailey, Colin Caulfield and Ben Newman have ever been playing between worlds. Put more simply, on ZIRP! DIIV answer the simple questions that so many bands can’t: What would it mean to grow up? And glow up, too?     For as long as they’ve been making music, DIIV have been victims of a world without the vocabulary to describe their willingness to braid the harshness of genres like shoegaze (on 2024’s Frog In Boiling Water) and grunge (2019’s Deceiver) with mellifluous and memorable pop melody. Over the years, the world has caught up with them, with artists like Slayyyter, Eartheater and Turnstile forcing old-guard gatekeepers to find new ways to describe this gleeful disregard for old-fashioned scene designations and genre tags. With ZIRP! – and their embrace of The New Alternative – DIIV lock in on a name for the universe they’ve been chasing for all these years, and a sound that represents the apotheosis of that universe.  Produced by British pop wizard A. G. Cook (Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX) – a chief architect of our current post-category future – ZIRP!, named for the zero interest rate policies that drew us into a world of failed startups and turned us all into atomised “users,” expands on the themes of Frog In Boiling Water with a newfound lightness. Here, Palantir, societal breakdown and streaming’s endless hamster wheel are all fodder for rich, sparkling pop songs: Album opener and lead single “The Fountain” pairs the sprawl and squall of DIIV records past with a jolting rhythmic guitar section that has arena-filling potential. Throughout, the band is zeroing in on its punchiest, most memorable melodies to date, each new internal hook and tossed-off earworm indicative of a band more than ready to make good on its ability to play in the mainstream. When DIIV initially approached Cook, the producer says, “it was in the spirit of destroying & rebuilding their demos, Screamadelica-style, into a finished product, but that hybrid, half-remix approach felt completely wrong to me.” Instead, he became a professor of DIIV studies, attending the band’s shows and forming a unified theory of where the band needed to go next. “I became a bit obsessed with their live sound, and insisted on recording live drums before most of the songs were even finished. We spent a lot of time recording intricate guitar parts with specific guitar pedals, and as little time as possible doing anything on a computer, at least by my standards,” he says. “After a few rounds of that, ZIRP! emerged as a concept, and a sort of utopian, dystopian mantra. For me it became a vehicle to push the band into new territory.”    DIIV will be performing at Balaclava Fest in Brazil on September 27th ahead of supporting Interpol on select dates across North America this October. DIIV will also perform with Basement on October 20th at Shrine Expo Hall. Today, SUGAR debuts Changes: The Story of SUGAR, a 20-minute mini documentary chronicling the history of the band, from their first practice sessions in the early 90s to their three sold-out Webster Hall shows this past May. The documentary premieres on YouTube at 12 Noon ET today and will be followed immediately by a YouTube online Afterparty with Bob Mould. Produced and directed by Rob Hatch-Miller (Other Music, Syl Johnson: Any Way The Wind Blows) and filmed entirely over the course of SUGAR’s run at Webster Hall, the documentary features archival footage, sit-down interviews with members Bob Mould, David Barbe and Malcolm Travis, snippets from Mould’s memoir, "See A Little Light: The Trail Of Rage And Melody,” and special guest appearances. The film was edited by Greg King (The Elephant 6 Recording Co, Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History Of Gary Young & Pavement) and shot by cinematographer Paul Yee (Reality, Joy Ride), who has also previously collaborated with Hatch-Miller on music videos for the New Pornographers, Wild Flag, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Real Estate, Aimee Mann, Frankie Cosmos, and Titus Andronicus. “It seems to have been one of the happiest eras of Bob's life,” said Hatch-Miller. “We found so much great archival footage, like Lance Bangs' never-before-seen video of the band's first show ever at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, footage of Bob's solo acoustic European festival tour with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana in 1991, and so many clips of Bob and the band on MTV's 120 Minutes, where they were so warmly embraced and brought to a mainstream television audience.” As Mould says in the film, “I tend to be identified most with Hüsker Dü and my solo albums, but few know the half of how much fun I had with Sugar.” WATCH CHANGES: THE STORY OF SUGAR ATTEND THE ONLINE AFTERPARTY WITH BOB MOULD With the triumphant European leg of their Love You Even Still World Tour wrapped up, the band is eagerly gearing up for their North American shows, which begin on August 11 in Denver and feature 24 dates across the U.S., including three sold out nights at First Avenue in Minneapolis MN and two shows at Union Transfer in Philadelphia PA, while also hitting Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C, Boston, New York, and Atlanta, with the final date being October 24 in Athens, GA. Today, Susanna Hoffs invites you into her most intimate, frank and personal conversations, with the announcement of her new album of all original music. Arriving September 18th on her own record label, Baroque Folk, The List is what happens when an artist and her closest friends gather around the kitchen table and share the stories that define one's life: heartbreak, an empty nest, a new crush, foolish mistakes and the fading memory of what that might have been. It is all part of The List, as Susanna Hoffs turns her deepest, decade-spanning memories into 12 songs that not only reflect what it has meant to be alive and in love, but turn the page to a new chapter in her astounding artistic legacy.

Recognized the world over as the co-founder and frontwoman of the multi-platinum, chart-topping band The Bangles – who soundtracked an era with anthems like "Manic Monday," "Walk Like an Egyptian," "In Your Room" and "Eternal Flame" – Susanna Hoffs is best known to her inner circle for the stories she tells, who likes nothing more than to jam in her living room with a revolving cast of creative partners. Recorded live in her Los Angeles home, and produced with CJ Camerieri (Bon Iver, Paul Simon, yMusic), The Listfeatures collaborations with Rufus Wainwright, Dan Wilson, Edie Brickell, Greg Leisz, Ryan Lerman, Desure, Jesse Harris, Ny Oh, Grant Milliken, Spencer Zahn, Larry Goldings and more who together shared laughter and tears over the course of vulnerable sessions and true confessions. 

Out today, and written with Dan Wilson and CJ Camerieri, The List's lead single"Casablanca" is a meditation on unfinished romances suspended in time. Inspired both by a rewatch of the film Casablanca, and the surreal New Orleans encounter Susanna Hoffs had with the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir in 1988 – a walk through the French Quarter, an impromptu parade of Dead Heads forming behind them – it is a song about possibility, and what might have been.

If Susanna Hoffs thinks it, she will say it – no matter how outrageous or scandalous – and across The List, she channels her sense of humor, keen powers of observation and eye for detail into powerful statements of love and longing, loss and resilience, loneliness and limbo, reinvention and self-discovery. Opening with "Casablanca," The List closes with "What Are Wings For" written by Hoffs, Camerieri, and Brickell, for the musical adaptation of Hoffs' bestselling, debut novel, This Bird Has Flown (hailed as "a total knockout" by the New York Times). Sung by the story's protagonist, Jane Start, it is a declaration of personal and artistic freedom, as Jane finds the courage to break free from expectation and claim her own moment in the spotlight, finding her own voice.
