Tom Waits Shares Comically Wry Spoken Word Track "The Fly", Listen Now

TOM WAITS SHARES NEW COMICALLY WRY SPOKEN WORD TRACK “THE FLY”, LISTEN HERE

Artwork by Casey Waits

“The Fly”, a new spoken-word track by Tom Waits, is out today on all streaming platforms. Waits wields his whipsaw humor in this satirical ode to the common housefly. The track expresses a begrudging admiration for the brief unsung life of the insect: "You have no house, well you have mine / You have no real friends, stay away from the wine / House fly go to sleep say goodbye, no one will weep when you die."

The new track arrives alongside an accompanying lyric video illustrated by Casey Waits, which features the fly and his guy.

"The Fly" is the B-side to "Boots On The Ground," Waits’ collaboration with Massive Attack released earlier this year—his first new original music since the 2011 album Bad As Me. Both tracks will be available on 12” vinyl.

When asked about the song, Waits said: Today, as in all of mankind's yesterdays, guarantees this type of song will never go out of style. Man's folly of fiascos is a feast for the flies. Hence, the B side of Massive Attack’s upcoming 12 inch "The Fly" features my appreciation for the winged nuisance."

Slated for release on September 4, the track is only available for streaming but available for purchase on the vinyl 12”. Massive Attack is embracing an eco-conscious vinyl pressing and packaging process for this record to leave a smaller carbon footprint. This ‘EcoSonic’ edition will be 180g vinyl in colors, red, white and blue and are packed at random. Pre-order it HERE.

This 12" vinyl is priced as a fundraiser, with proceeds donated by Massive Attack and Waits/Brennan to support civil rights and community advocacy organizations.

GRAMMY-nominated, Gold-certified songwriter and powerhouse vocalist HAYLA unveils her sophomore album DARK, an impactful and ethereal sequel to 2025’s DUSK, out today, July 31. Filled with a haunting and ethereal atmosphere and mesmerizing harmonies as heard on previous singles “HEAL,” “ENOUGH,” and “EASIER,” plus today’s focus track “DARK,” this project signifies her bold shift from dance floor anthems into powerful alternative storytelling.

Each song on DARK carries a lingering sensation, as it puts HAYLA’s effortless alto vocals on full display. The release’s focus track “DARK,” establishes an overall mood and theme for the record within a gentle yet resonant soundscape. “I’m not alone in the dark, I feel you heavy on my heart,” she proclaims, before exploring the nuances of emotions around isolation, connection, grief, and longing throughout the project.

Shares HAYLA about “DARK,” “This song is about grief. All of the conversations that weren’t had, all of the memories I keep and the heaviness felt in the aftermath. The dreams that bring a lost one closer again and the glow that you find in the darkest of nights that remind you you’re not alone. I have been surrounded in a warmth ever since I suffered this loss. There are signs everywhere if you’re open to them. Sending love to anyone who’s grieving.”

Another standout “FEAR” feels dissonant and soft at first, before transitioning into a full belt during the chorus. This track contains few lyrics, letting HAYLA’s vocal dynamics provide an accurate portrayal of how fear impacts a vulnerable person, leading into the desperate cry “Why’ve I got to fear it all?” The songs become increasingly charged as the project progresses, ending on a high note. DARK culminates in the impactful “I JUST HOPE WE DON”T RUN OUT OF TIME.”

“This album has a lot of themes in it surrounding grief and heartbreak,” adds HAYLA. “I wrote this album in the darkest period of my life. A time when I wasn’t sure if I knew how to vocalise my feelings and what I had been through. It’s written extremely authentically and for the love of writing, connection and catharsis.”

The album release follows the launch of HAYLA’s 2026 festival run, which started with a momentous EDC Las Vegas Kinetic Field main stage debut in May. There, thousands of festival-goers packed the stage to see her performing her solo releases “Fall Again,” “Freefall,” “Alone,” “Visions of You,” “Embers” from her debut album DUSK and new release “Heal,” alongside her major collaborations with Kx5, John Summit, KYGO, Meduza, ILLENIUM, Nelly Furtado, Sub Focus and Wilkinson. Since then, she’s shared her mesmerizing show with stages at Breakaway Festival in Columbus, OH, Washington DC’s Project Glow, Calgary Badlands Festival, San Diego Pride, and coming up this weekend, Amsterdam World Pride.

About HAYLA

HAYLA is one of electronic music’s most recognizable voices, a Liverpool-born singer-songwriter whose powerhouse vocals have graced some of the biggest stages and records in the genre. Her path led from teaching singing lessons in her hometown to headlining sold-out venues across North America and performing at Coachella, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and Ushuaïa Ibiza.

A GRAMMY-nominated, Gold-certified artist, she has scored Dance Radio #1s with John Summit (“Where You Are,” “Shiver”), Kygo (“Without You”), MEDUZA (“Another World”), and ILLENIUM (“In My Arms”). Her debut album DUSK earned a Spotify Mint cover and BBC Radio 1 “Hottest Record,” with “Visions Of You” reaching #2 on Mediabase and top 10 on Billboard Dance Airplay 2025. Her collaboration with Nelly Furtado, “FADED,” delivered a haunting cinematic dancefloor anthem via Casablanca Records. In 2026, she received nominations for an iHeartRadio Music Award and four Electronic Dance Music Awards. She won a Femmy Award for Best Vocalist at Miami Music Week and made her solo debut on the main stages of EDC Las Vegas and EDC Mexico. Across her solo works and collaborations, collectively HAYLA has garnered over 1 billion streams on Spotify.

HAYLA took to the stage at St Pancras Church in London in March 2026 for an exclusive show performing entirely new music from her upcoming album DARK, a bold statement of intent and a clear signal of her musical evolution. Her sound she calls “sad bitch music” is emotionally heavy yet hopeful, melancholic but empowering. Themes of loss, love, grief, and resilience run throughout. Rather than offering answers, the music holds space allowing listeners to find their own meaning. The message at the heart of it all is simple but powerful: you are not alone.

DARK is out now.

Today, the NYC native melodic punk rocker Caitlin Starr announces her fiery sophomore EP Speed Saves, out October 9 via G-Foil Records. In just five songs, the guitarist and singer-songwriter captures a conflicted, high-velocity chapter in her life, the rush that feels like salvation and the inevitable collisions that follow. Her new single "Pass Me By", which watches life barrel by with its crunchy guitars and anthemic pop punk hooks, is also out today with a grungy yet wistful new music video.

LISTEN: "PASS ME BY"

"Pass Me By" and its accompanying music video are "a satirical, high-energy take on the feeling that life is barreling past you, scrolling through moments while everything speeds on without you," according to Starr. "Inspired by moments of paralysis and FOMO, the lyrics pair darkly humorous, irreverent lines with anthemic hooks. Sonically it’s melodic and upbeat with heavy riffs and a pop-rock punch: driving drums, crunchy guitars, and a singable chorus that turns feeling left behind into a confident banger."

The "Pass Me By" music video takes Starr and the listener on aimless rollerblade ride through New York City. With nothing but her headphones and the comfort of familiar spots in the sprawling urban, Manhattan maze, she captures both stillness and dynamism, sharply contrasting the almost-empty streets with constant movement.

Written by Caitlin Starr and produced by Chris Cubeta, the title Speed Saves riffs on the phrase “Jesus saves” and “speed kills,” repurposing it as a commentary on how speed — long hours, multiple jobs, constant motion, racing through the city at full speed, mania, excessive stimulants, chasing validation — can feel like the only way to keep up with the world. The songs trace both the ways that speed has temporarily rescued Caitlin and the emotional and physical crashes that come after, blending piano-rooted songwriting with raw punk immediacy.

Last month, Starr shared "Will U b My Girlfriend", a chaotic, confessional single with a guitar section that outpaces the singer's beating heart, spiraling from an intense lesbian crush. With its hooky lyrics crusted in grunge instrumentation, the single finds the artist at her most anxious, romantic, energetic, impulsive, and wild.

Caitlin Starr cut her teeth in the NYC punk scene, using her talents as a multi-instrumentalist to support different punk and metal bands around the city for years. Though she rose to local prominence as the bassist for Suzy Clue and Shred Flintsone, as well as Skorts, and Truman Flyer, she's been crafting her signature melodic punk sound as a solo artist at the same time. The singer-songwriter made her solo debut in 2025 with the EP Hold On Tight. Now, with Speed Saves, the DIY singer-songwriter is ready to turn the dial up on her amp, dyeing a 90s-flavored alternative rock in her melodic pop rock songwriting.

"Melodic punk is similar to grunge pop," she says. "Kurt Cobain was such a great pop writer, even though Nirvana was grunge and alternative. I see it as the blending the raw power and angst of hardcore music with infectious pop melodies that make you wanna listen over and over. I've always been drawn to melodies and am a songwriter at heart, but it wasn't until I started playing heavier music live that I felt I could fully express how I was feeling."

The forthcoming EP was shaped in collaboration: Chris Cubeta produced, Meredith Okomoto served as assistant engineer, Carmen Castillo played bass, and Zack Jones played drums, with Lucy Coykendall performing drums on the track “Will u b My Girlfriend." Caitlin, a classically trained jazz pianist and multi-intrusmentalist, brought these deeply personal songs to the sessions, which were then arranged, tracked, and refined with the band and production team to preserve the songs’ intimate urgency while adding rhythmic propulsion.

The result is a concise, honest snapshot of an era defined by speed, tenacity, and the cost of racing to keep up. Speed Saves until you crash.

------------------------------
Today sees the release of Renascent, the first new studio album in over a decade from seminal Manchester outfit The Durutti Column, out now via London Records. Already earning widespread critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, MOJO, Stereogum, Uncut, and more, Renascent marks a remarkable return for guitarist and composer Vini Reilly and band members Bruce Mitchell and Keir Stewart, reaffirming their status as one of music’s most singular and influential voices.

Listen to Renascent HERE.

The album represents a full-circle moment in The Durutti Column story. Released with a Factory Toocatalogue number in collaboration with Oliver Wilson, son of Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, Renascent also reunites the band with original Factory Records design collaborators Mark Holt and Hamish Muir of 8vo. Their striking artwork reflects the music's unique balance of modernist precision and romantic warmth through a rich and sensuous visual language.

Coinciding with the album's release is the arrival of its latest single, “Sargasso Sea,” a stirring and melancholic composition written by Reilly and featuring acclaimed Manchester artist Caoilfhionn Rose on vocals and piano.

Listen to “Sargasso Sea” HERE.
Reflecting on her involvement with the track, Rose explains: “I remember when I first heard a version of ‘Sargasso Sea’ being recorded for The Durutti Column’s Chronicle LX: XL album. I was really struck by it, especially the vivid and reflective lyrics. Several years later I reimagined the song and was invited to record it in a session for Renascent.”

“Vini, Keir and Bruce are all wonderful people and musicians and I’ve always been really inspired by their approach to making music. Over the years they’ve been so positive about my singing and encouraged me to improvise and experiment, trusting the creative process. They’ve been like mentors to me and have been very influential in the way I make music.”

True originals are rare. Yet across five decades, Vini Reilly and The Durutti Column have cultivated an instantly recognizable musical language: intricate without ostentation, immediate yet timeless, melancholic yet uplifting.

Once operating largely outside prevailing trends, The Durutti Column now find themselves being rediscovered by audiences encountering their work for the first time. Appropriately, Renascent (meaning “being reborn, reviving, springing up afresh”) captures both this renewed cultural visibility and a profound artistic resurgence. Long celebrated by devoted followers, their influence has increasingly reached a new generation of listeners and artists. Most notably, Harry Styles cited The Durutti Column as a major influence on his 2026 album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. Frank Ocean, The Avalanches, Yung Lean, Youth Lagoon and Mark William Lewis have openly acknowledged the band's influence.

Musically, Renascent exists in constant dialogue between past and present. Tracks such as “Time Present and Time Past” embody a sense of cyclical motion: reflective yet forward-looking. Reilly’s distinctive improvisational approach remains at the heart of the album, favoring spontaneity and intuition over convention.
“Every single piece of music writes itself,” Reilly notes, and throughout Renascent the recordings preserve that sense of immediacy. Pieces such as “Vapour in a Matchbox” transform fleeting inspiration into compositions of enduring emotional resonance.

Despite the passage of recent years, Reilly’s creative philosophy remains rooted in movement, response and discovery. Renascent is not an attempt to revisit the past, but to reanimate it, allowing familiar ideas to evolve into something new, vital and unexpected.

The Durutti Column are Renascent.
The album is available across a number of formats including digital, CD (both with the bonus track “All They See is Fire”) and transparent yellow vinyl. There is also a limited edition vinyl featuring alternative artwork, pressed on bottle green vinyl and featuring an oversized booklet. The official Durutti Column store hosts some very limited editions including a cassette, and a very special edition slipcase version of the album (limited to 1,000 copies worldwide) with alternative artwork, heavyweight black vinyl, a DVD with unique visualizers for every track, 4 art prints and a folded poster.
