Harmony of Difference premiered as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art 2017 Biennial alongside a film by Rojas and also featuring artwork by Kamasi Washington’s sister, Amani Washington. The new music is an original six part suite that explores the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as “counterpoint,” which Washington defines as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies.” Beyond the artistic impulse to expand the possibilities within counterpoint, Washington wanted to create something that opened people’s minds to the gift of diversity.
Each of the first five movements is its own unique composition. “Truth,” the sixth movement, fuses all five compositions into one simultaneous performance. Echoing this fusion, Amani created five paintings focused on raw shapes and colors, each inspired by one of the first five movements of the suite. Amani then combined these paintings to create a sixth: an abstract depiction of a human face.
The film, directed by A.G. Rojas, brings the metaphoric ideas found in both the music and paintings to life. While still quite abstract, it focuses on the harmony found in people from South Central and East Los Angeles and shows the beauty in their differences.
Harmony Of Difference will be available on all digital services, as well as on 12” vinyl with a 14-page concertina booklet featuring original artwork by Amani Washington and still images from the film by A.G. Rojas on September 29. It is available to pre-order via http://y-t-r.co/harmonyofdifference
“My hope is that witnessing the beautiful harmony created by merging different musical melodies will help people realize the beauty in our own differences.”—Kamasi Washington

THE NATIONAL'S LEAD SINGLE
"THE SYSTEM ONLY DREAMS IN TOTAL DARKNESS" HITS #1 ON TRIPLE-A CHART
SINGLE OFF FORTHCOMING NEW ALBUM
SLEEP WELL BEAST OUT SEPTEMBER 8 VIA 4AD
Congratulations to The National whose single, " The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" has claimed the #1 spot on the BDS Triple-A radio chart. This marks the band's first #1 at commercial radio. "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness" is off The National's forthcoming album Sleep Well Beast which is set to be released on September 8 via 4AD. As with the entire album, the single was produced by member Aaron Dessner with co-production by Bryce Dessner and Matt Berninger. Sleep Well Beast was mixed by Peter Katis and recorded at Aaron Dessner's Hudson Valley, New York studio, Long Pond. Sleep Well Beast is available for pre-order and will be available in CD, digital and double LP formats.
Watch "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness," in this Casey Reas directedvideo.
"'The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness' blends elements of the National's signature indie rock anthems with a shot of disco funk. A shuffling drum beat and a grimy guitar loop mix with a slow-burning blend of piano, synths and horns that rise at the end..." - Rolling Stone
"the National re-emerges upbeat, verging on danceable, with 'The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness,' a plaint about lost intimacy delivered with a kicking drumbeat, an insistent distorted guitar lick and a strobing video clip. The band hasn't set aside its fondness for Minimalism; there's lots of repetition in the underlying arrangement. But this time the National is willing to swing." -The New York Times
"Produced by Aaron Dessner 'System' has a sound that's sharper than on The National's past two albums - more propulsive than dense - and it gleams and shudders with nervous bravado." - NPR
"Here, they all sound more energized, jutting forward with a slick confidence." -Pitchfork (Best New Track)
"No matter what Matt's singing about here it sounds good, and "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" is a pleasant omen for whatever other uncommon amalgamations might come next on Sleep Well Beast." - Spin
The National have confirmed a world-tour in support of Sleep Well Beast. Dates kick off in Cork, Ireland on September 16. Highlights include Forest Hills Stadium in New York on October 6, The Hollywood Bowl on October 11 and multiple night residencies in more than 10 cities across Europe and North America. In advance of the tour The National have played Glastonbury ("Could The National Be Glastonbury's Next Headliners?" said the NME review) and the upcoming Haven Festival in Copenhagen. One of the most successful, prolific and influential artists of her generation, Tori Amos will release her hotly-anticipated new album September 8, 2017 onDecca Records. First album track “Cloud Riders” debuted with NPR Music and is available to post/share HERE.
Tori Amos shares her inspiration behind “Cloud Riders,”
“Before the Storm, at 4:22 AM,
I saw a shooting star.
Some Storms are electrifying
but some Storms are deadly.
Life Changing.
Some resolve themselves,
Some don't.
Conflicts can be that way.
You don't know how a conflict is going to play out when you are in the middle of it.
And the one thing I have learned is that when the Cloud Riders are coming, they cannot be outrun.”
Amos’s fifteenth album is an intense feast of melody, protest, tenderness and pain. In the summer of 2016, she took a road trip through North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains. The intention was to reconnect with the stories and songlines of her mother’s family, who were from the North Carolina and Tennessee Smoky Mountain area. That winter, two seismic events knocked the plan off its axis. The fall out from the US Election. And in January her mother, Maryellen Amos, suffered a severe stroke leaving her unable to speak.
The complex influence of America’s alt-right Super PACs, lobbyists and think tanks informs much of the tension in Native Invader. “It wasn’t going to be a record of pain, blood and bone when I began,” she says. “It wasn’t going to be a record of division. But the Muses 9 insisted that I listened and watched the conflicts that were traumatizing the nation and write about those raw emotions. Hopefully people will find strength and resilience within the songs to give them the energy to survive the storms that we are currently in”. The sense of semantic distortion permeates Native Invader. Amos talks of the need to form a “militia of the mind” in the face of national lies. Hidden messages and subliminal protests lend themselves perfectly to Amos’s natural playfulness. For all its dark themes, this album is a joy to absorb, full of warmth and puzzles.
More than two decades after her debut studio album Little Earthquakes -- recently hailed by NPR as #27 of 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women -- Tori’s work is as powerful as ever. A select group of fans will get to hear a more in-depth conversation about the album at the sold-out Pitchfork “In Sight Out” event on August 8 in NYC, hosted by Jill Mapes. Tori Amos’ extensive North American fall concert schedule kicks off on October 24 (complete itinerary below). The North American concert dates are part of a larger world tour she begins in September in Europe.
Following 2014’s Unrepentant Geraldines – her eighth Billboard Top 10 album -- Native Invader is Tori’s fifteenth studio album and will be made available in various physical and digital configurations, as well as vinyl later this fall. The physical CD package will be available in standard as well as deluxe offerings; the latter includes a hardcover book and two bonus tracks.
A pioneer across multiple platforms, Tori was the first major label artist to offer a single for download. Nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, she has had her songs turned into graphic novels and has produced ground-breaking videos throughout her career. In late 2016 she released the title song ‘Flicker’ to the acclaimed Netflix documentary ‘Audrie and Daisy’, addressing issues of high school rape. A noted humanitarian, Tori is co-founder of RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), which is the United States’ largest anti-sexual assault organization.
