LA-based Marlon Rabenreither, aka Gold Star, has spent the last decade establishing himself as one of the most gifted songwriters of the LA underground music scene. On albums such as Big Blue, Uppers & Downers, and last year's How To Shoot The Moon, Rabenreither’s lovelorn lyricism and languid melodic sensibility brought forth a weathered strain of Americana that felt both timeless and uniquely his own. Catching the attention of numerous Indie music titans with his exemplary discography, Rabenreither has since collaborated and toured with artists the likes of Mazzy Star, Orville Peck, Lucinda Williams, Phoebe Bridgers, the Black Lips, and Stephen Malkmus. Just this week, he wrapped a short tour with Brett Cobb.
Following the release of How To Shoot The Moon, Marlon went into the studio with producer Travis Pavur, a studio vet who has worked with everyone from Lana Del Rey to Andrew Bird. New single "Happy" is the first track from this session to be released. Here's some background / context on the song:
“In some ways, this song is actually about what it says it is about -happiness- but I think it’s really about the elusiveness of happiness. Lyrically it reminds me of the feeling of watching strangers go about their day from afar, happy and content, driven by an elusive purpose - mysterious and totally un-achievable. Some of the lyrics are about my personal experiences, others about close friends- but really it’s about everyone’s pursuit of happiness and the disconnects it can reveal.” -Marlon / Gold Star
