Today, Katy & the Null Sets shares the lyric video for their new single "Last Time / Next Time," from their forthcoming album, Troublemaker which is out Oct. 24.
A perfectly placed guitar blast exudes aggravated disappointment as Katy Ohsiek laments, “I guess there’s next time." Patience is a virtue, but as Katy & the Null Sets' new track, “Last Time/Next Time” reminds us, it is not time spent without longing, wonder and even a little frustration. “I estimate the way this might end / your hand on the dip of my neck / should I be fearing for my life?”, they coo over a convincingly relaxed bossa nova beat… do we ever really know in such scenarios?
“I have always been inspired by the bossa nova genre; some of the first jazz standards I performed when I was a kid were Jobim tunes. I’ve written countless bossa nova-inspired songs, but what sets this one apart is the bombastic, aggressive, fuzzed-out guitar bridge that totally doesn’t match the elevator music vibe…I guess I was trying to evoke the feeling of putting on a calm face but being on the cusp of freaking out!”

“Last Time /Next Time” follows the release of “I Wish I Had Met You in the Summer” and “F*** me!” all precursors to Katy & the Null Sets' imminent album, Troublemaker. The album showcases vulnerable, biting lyricism interweaved with uniquely melodic song structures that borrow from bossa nova, aughts indie rocK and modern Americana. Helmed by Katy Ohsiek (of Portland’s foamboy) the album embodies themes of contrasting dualism within seasons and both interpersonal/personal change. Lyrically the album is an open diary, “It details a one-sided relationship situated in the context of a being in grad school in the midst of a global pandemic,” Katy reveals, “Oregon winters can be brutal, but they also make me love summer more than I ever have.”
