(July 21, 2023) - 24-year-old polymath Lauren Auder releases her long-awaited debut full length album the infinite spine via True Panther Records. the infinite spine reflects the heaviness and celebration that comes with surviving in a world that leaves you to forge your own path and includes the recently shared song “the ripple,” produced by Mura Masa along with “hawthorne81,” “atoms” and “we2assume2many2roles.” Both a head rush and a car crash, the infinite spine is meant to be listened to while in motion, across the city and across countries. The project is underlined with introspection and melancholic trepidation that undercuts being consumed with feeling most alive.

Written over the past four years, mostly in London where Auder currently resides as well as her childhood hometown in the south of France, the twelve tracks are a fully-formed collection that represents a body finally becoming whole. Throughout its creation, Auder was haunted by the question "what if we could rewrite history?"

In this context, Auder declares that "pop music is meant to be experienced openly," discarding the intentionally enigmatic elements that characterized her previous releases. Its imagery evokes her struggle coming to terms with her experience as a trans woman, and everything glows with unbridled emotion, a reflection of her personal history. As the infinite spine unravels, it also imagines a utopian future in which blame does not exist.

Long-term creative partner dviance, as well as a slew of other collaborators including the aforementioned Mura Masa, Alex Parrish, mmph, Jessica Winter and members of London bands caroline and Shovel Dance Collective all contributed to the album, and the resulting songs are a palette in which Auder colors in a world through her own eloquent lens. Woven together by this community of support, it’s her most honest and immediate work to date. Auder made this record about coming to terms with her trans identity, and the inherently political nature of merely residing in a body that is constantly under threat refracts across almost every song.

From unpacking the anxiety and fear that comes with other people getting to decide how you are perceived (“madonna”), to the forthright pounding heartbeat of “datta920” (“how the men in your life told you your essence was wrong”), Auder still perseveres: “not any other life / not any other body.” “The only way out is through,” she explains, but along the way ‘the infinite spine’ indulges in the fantasy of imagining the ultimate utopia with no one to blame.

The album follows a remarkable run of 3 EPs - 2021’s 5 Songs For The Dysphoric, 2020’s two caves in, and 2018’s Who Carry’s You as well as a myriad of nuanced, poignant singles and collaborations with Celeste, Clams Casino, Caroline Polachek, Danny L Harle, and more. Initially a member of the experimental beatmaking and SoundCloud rap scene from which her early recordings formed, the new music is her clearest evolution as a songwriter, storyteller, composer, and artist. Woven together by this community of support, she is crafting her most honest and immediate work to date.

Auder's baroquely orchestrated pop songs fuse classical and post-rock elements with contemporary themes of generational discontent and personal turmoil, resulting in vivid musical portraits. The early EPs helped define what would become the foundation and sonic palette for Lauren’s forthcoming debut album. Auder’s unique vision and take on pop music was met with early critical acclaim with Pitchfork praising their debut single “The Baptist”as “Intense and spiritual pop” and The Evening Standard calling it “Irresistible Neo-Gothic pop.” Spending these last few years working with close collaborators like Mura Masa, Jessica Winter, Dviance, and Alex Parish, Lauren has been flourishing into the artist ready to live up to the visionary potential that coursed through her early releases.
