"Bradley was a relentlessly transfixing presence onstage, able to quiet an entire audience with a ballad before turning a crowd frenzied with full-stage dancing and a deep, full-throated roar." -
Rolling Stone

"The way Charles Bradley sang, the way he commanded a stage, his weathered yet powerful scream - every bit of his essence was imbued with the gratitude, love and absolute urgency of a man who waited until his 60s to realize his dream." - NPR Music

November 5, 2018 would have been Charles Bradley's 70th birthday. In celebration of his extraordinary life, Daptone imprint Dunham Records will release his fourth and final album on November 9. Black Velvet will feature ten studio recordings never before included on any album including lead single "I Feel A Change." Watch the video for the track, directed by Living On Soul's Jeff Broadway & Cory Bailey, here: https://youtu.be/Cx8qITIIRiU

Black Velvet is a celebration of Charles Bradley, lovingly assembled by his friends and family at Dunham/Daptone Records. Though chronologically the material spans Charles' entire career, this is no anthology, greatest hits or other shallow rehashing of the songs that already made him famous. Rather, this album is a profound exploration through the less-travelled corners of the soulful universe that Charles and his longtime producer, co-writer and friend Tommy "TNT" Brenneck created in the studio together over their decade-long partnership.

It features new songs recorded during the sessions from each of his three albums, heard here for the very first time in all their scorching glory: "Can't Fight the Feeling," "Fly Little Girl" and the heart-wrenching single "I Feel a Change"; hard core rarities like his funk-bomb duet with LaRose Jackson, "Luv Jones," the psychedelic groover, "(I Hope You Find) The Good Life" and the ever-illusive alternate full band electric version of "Victim of Love"; sought-after covers of Nirvana's "Stay Away," Neal Young's "Heart of Gold" and Rodriguez's "Slip Away"; and the title track "Black Velvet," a stirring Menahan Street Band instrumental to which Charles was never able to cut a vocal.

Brenneck notes of "I Feel A Change," recorded during the Victim of Love sessions, "Horns and organ were recorded later adding a haunting beauty to the otherwise a cappella intro. The lyrics are 100% Charles. Personal yet abstract. Directly from the heart. He truly loved the expression 'going through changes' and this was a few years before we would record our rendition of Sabbath's 'Changes' with the Budos. Sadly Charles never got to hear the finished version of this beautiful song."

The release of Black Velvet follows a string of critically lauded albums including his 2011 debut album No Time for Dreaming featuring his most successful single and a song that continues to resonate, "The World (Is Going Up In Flames)"; his 2013 album Victim of Lovethat included more of his signature deeply autobiographical songs; and 2016's Changes, whose title track and lead single was the deeply moving Black Sabbath cover.

Through the years, Charles also became a ubiquitous voice in pop culture. He was featured in the 2012 documentary Charles Bradley: Soul Of America, following him in the days leading to the release of this breakthrough first album. He was also in the 2017 documentary Living On Soul, featuring Bradley and his Daptone labelmates on stage and backstage during the 2014 Daptone Super Soul Revue at the legendary Apollo Theatre. Bradley performed on television shows including Netflix's Luke Cage and he was the singing voice of Minstrel Krampus on American Dad. His songs have also been featured on many film and television shows including the title tracks for Netflix's Big Mouth and HBO's Barry, and so much more.

The touring and performing was non-stop for Bradley too-first with the Menahan Street Band and then his longstanding band The Extraordinaires. He played all the big festivals - Glastonbury, Primavera Sound, Coachella (twice!). He was named Road Warrior and Hardest Working Artist by A2IM's Libera Awards and Paste Magazine declared him the "Best Live Act of 2015." He performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan, Later... with Jools Holland and more, and Charles and the band's performance on CBS This Morning Saturday was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding On-Camera Musical Performance.

Charles was truly a transcendent singer who led a remarkable life, overcoming unimaginable adversity to achieve great success and international acclaim very late in his life. What was really special about him and made him different from everybody else in the world was how he understood his pain as a cry for universal love and humanity. He felt that if he loved enough--if we all loved each other enough-we could take away the world's pain and sadness. That is why he jumped off the stage and literally tried to hug everybody he could. It's why he took such great care of a mother that had abandoned him. It's why he sang and danced like a lunatic. It's why he screamed like an eagle. And that's why we love him.

On September 23rd, 2017, Charles Edward Bradley passed away from cancer, surrounded by his family, friends and bandmates. Black Velvet is a celebration of his life, and is destined to join Charles' first three albums alongside the cannon of essential soul records for the ages.

U.S. TOUR KICKS OFF IN D.C. TOMORROW

NOTHING - I Hate The Flowers (Official Music Video)

NOTHING have unveiled new video "I Hate The Flowers" directed by Matt Newman. The single, written by frontman Domenic Palermo and Brandon Setta, is a love song about NYC and the strong sense of impending doom it leaves on you as you exit your apartment. Its title is a nod to the agoraphobic anthem by Strawberry Switchblade's "Trees and Flowers" but also a sequel to the band's "Vertigo Flowers" which appeared on 2016's Tired of Tomorrow. Palermo notes "I've been referring to humans as flowers since the earliest days of NOTHING for their beautifully sad and their literal life/death cycle is so relatable."

Dance On The Blacktop  pulls from all corners of life in its contents. Stories of self loathing, self destruction, and a general disdain for humanity and its, "insignificant" role in Palermo's vision of the universe are met with his poised amusement and tranquil hysteria being one himself. All of this told through the eyes of a recently diagnosed Palermo suggesting he is dealing with the early stages of CTE, a neurodegenerative disease found in people with serious head injuries. Palermospews songs of heightened confusion, anxiety, paranoia, depression, and chronic battles with physical pain- a result of his unstable past and more recent illness. These themes, spoken in a lush angelic language are juxtaposed against the band's now signature apocalyptic, reverberating wall of shimmering sound.

NOTHING sought out celebrated producer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Breeders, Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile) to help accentuate the band's love for all sounds 90s, from rock to shoegaze to pop realms and on both sides of the pond.NOTHING kick off their first U.S. run in support of the album this Friday in D.C. Liz Phair Amps On The Lawn Tour Kicks Off This Week

LIZ PHAIR
AMPS ON THE LAWN TOUR
KICKS OFF TONIGHT

"Make America Girly Again"

Following the release of this spring's Girly-Sound to Guyville -- a 25th anniversary box set commemorating her zeitgeist-defining album, Exile in Guyville, and its equally resonant collection of demo songs -- Liz Phair will be kicking off a rare nationwide tour tonight.  This tour, called the Amps On The Lawn tour, will be the first time Phair plays many of these songs live to audiences around the country. The dates see Phair touring with full band, and also includes sets at this year's Hopscotch Festival, Ohana Festival, and RiotFest in her hometown of Chicago. Acclaimed artistSpeedy Ortiz will be opening for all of Phair's shows.

Phair -- who has sold more than 5 million albums worldwide, three of which have gone gold -- is one of the most important musical voices of the last 25 years. More than two decades after the release of her debut, Phair's influence in contemporary music, particularly over female voices in alternative music, can be felt today more than ever. The wildfire response to the release of Girly-Sound to Guyvillerecemented Phair as an artist whose work is as meaningful in 2018 as it was in 1993.

Praise for Girly-Sound to Guyville:
"Listening to Exile in Guyville still feels this way: Like someone is telling you that all the weird, uncomfortable things you think and worry about are, in fact, just ordinary fears. Those feelings, it turns out, are simply the fallout of being alive" - Pitchfork

"...if ever there was a time to revisit Guyville, it is now - in a moment when its walls seem to be tumbling. Matador re-releases the album this month, along with songs from three cassettes Ms. Phair put out under the name "Girly-Sound" in 1991. Those young women who were touched by it 25 years ago are now marching, running for office, proclaiming #MeToo" - New York Times

"One of the sharpest, boldest rock albums of its era, or any era" - Washington Post

"Keyaddition to the alternative-rock canon" - Rolling Stone

"Bringing these songs back isn't just for nostalgia's sake. They've never been more relevant" -Stereogum

"She remains in a category all her own" - Slate

"Many women still see the world, and ourselves, through the sound of those 18 songs" - Huffington Post

"Hearing the entirety of the new boxed set is to realize more than ever that the celebrated shock value in a handful of the songs was just part of the story in an enormous outpouring of creativity that helped redefine not just what a woman could write about, but a man, too, even though hers remains a fairly inimitable voice, whether we're talking about what came out of her mouth or from below the capo" - Variety

"Her music remains exactly as relatable, smart, and genuine in 2018 as it was in 1993...The Girly-Sound material is as good as what's on Exile-which is to say it's brilliant" - FLOOD Magazine

Vera Sola Releases Single/ Music Video - "The Colony"

VERA SOLA RELEASES

DEBUT ALBUM SHADES OUT NOVEMBER 9TH

Vera Sola - The Colony (Official Video)

Today, Vera Sola released the second single,"The Colony," off of her forthcoming debut album SHADES out November 9th. The single comes with a stunning companion video shot by cinematographer Damon James Duke at Bombay Beach.

Though a longtime member of Elvis Perkins’ band, SHADES marks her first solo effort.SHADES is available for both digital and vinyl pre-order now. Vera Sola recently completed a North American tour with the legendary Rodriguez. She continues to play select dates throughout the US including the Mercury Lounge in New York City on September 11th. Today, Vera Sola has announced a West Coast run of dates with Haerts in December. Full tour dates below.

A statement from Vera Sola on "The Colony"

I wrote ‘the Colony’ very quickly last fall in the days following my return from a while spent supporting native water protectors at Standing Rock. It is loosely the story of America, sung from the perspective of the collective white colonial consciousness. It was important to me in the studio that the lead vocal was delivered in a dismissive tone of casual entitlement, and that the background vocals served as a heavy counterpoint: a choir of the souls who suffered, and continue to suffer, at the hands of the invading oppressor. Voices stripped of language, and left to howl, relegated to the background, yet providing the very foundation of the song, and by metaphorical extension, this country. The whole thing is of course an indictment—a paean to the land and her people.

Singing as the “I” in this case is an example of my divided conscience and consciousness—taking responsibility for, and an acknowledgement of, my part in that collective oppression by virtue of my privilege as a white body. It’s a conscious effort to call attention to that, as well as a deep heart-felt apology.

For the video, I wanted to, as I did on the recording, embody both white colonist and physicalized spirit of the stolen country and it’s first inhabitants. I wanted the setting to convey the sublimity of nature while emphasizing its dissection by industrialism. The boats that brought the first Europeans. The trains that crisscross and divide the land, bear the cargo of capitalism and the individuals that would stake claim to wherever they stepped off the platform. The highways and the power plants and oil derricks and power lines that mark and mar the plains and deserts and forests. Aerial footage seemed key here—a watching from above as if from the perspective of floating souls.

I’ve spent a good amount of time recently in the town of Bombay Beach, on the Salton Sea, California’s largest inland body of water, and current site of critical man-made environmental disaster. It seemed the perfect place to evoke the above—the destruction of the natural landscape, the uprising of industry, actions of prospecting and taking and killing, wittingly or unwittingly.

I met the director of photography, Damon James Duke, at Bombay Beach and as soon as I saw his coverage of the surrounding area, I knew there was no one better for the project. A brilliant eye, and exceedingly intrepid, he was able to help me bring what I wanted to life with unparalleled ease. Together we shot it in essentially a single 101-degrees-in-the-shade day.

Vera Sola grew up between New York City and a farm in Canada, raised by artists, writers and seekers. As a child she was surrounded by music—training early on as a dancer, learning to play piano, and later teaching herself guitar and bass. Writing too was always a passion. Considering she holds a degree in Literature from Harvard, it’s fitting that Vera Sola’s songs are arranged to give words a well-earned place at their center. On SHADES, Vera employs her background in poetry to explore at once the generalities and subtleties of the nature of ‘femininity’. Each song speaks the story of a different feminized character—whether a spurned lover, a stolen country, an anthropomorphized rhinoceros or biblical first woman—delivered with a skilled literary approach and signature turn of phrase.

Recorded in St. Louis at Native Sound Studio, Vera wrote, played and arranged all of the parts on SHADES. With her distinct voice as a foundation, traditional instrumentation and the music of found objects are woven into a soundscape that is all at once complex and sparse. "The Colony" follows up her debut single "Small Minds."
