Experimental Icelandic collective múm has released a new video for
"Hvernig Á Að Særa Vini Sína" (How to Hurt Your Friends) directed by Máni M. Sigfússon, and new single entitled "0,000Orð." Premiered with Stereogum, both tracks are taken from Early Birds, a compilation of 15 songs recorded between 1998 and 2000. Out on July 17th through Morr Music, the album comprises long-lost and extremely rare tracks taken from demo tapes and limited edition vinyl releases. Early Birds acts as a pastiche of the band's formative years, but the soft electronic glitches, incorporation of traditional and unconventional instruments, and múm's minimalistic melodies remain the common thread.
In the year of 1998 pop music had an "anything goes" mentality: guitars and electro, retro sounds or wicked forays into the digitized future. At this time, founding members Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason had been making music together as múm for about a year. The two bandmates were basically nomadic drifters, constantly moving from one basement studio to the next, traveling through Europe, recording anything and everything that came to mind. Whenever they felt like getting some fresh air, they would go out with their DAT recorders to do field recordings - only to return to some unfurnished apartment in Reykjavík, Montpellier or Berlin in order to mix and combine all the recorded material. Early Birds is all about those days. Both the LP and CD version include a booklet that explains how each of the 15 (mostly instrumental) tracks came to be.

a wonderfully cinematic album, a sonic backdrop to the end of the world painted in sorrowful and sweeping strings, coalescing organs”Consequence of Sound

Beautiful - both melancholy and uplifting at the same time"- CNN

Soulsavers have now unveiled the second and third parts of their four-part interview series chronicling the production of their latest album, The Light The Dead See. Part one can also be viewed here; stay tuned for the fourth and final part.

Out now via Mute, The Light The Dead See is the band’s fourth studio album, with collaboration from Dave Gahan, recorded at various locations across the globe and mastered at Abbey Road. This follow-up to 2009’s Broken, can be purchased now on CD or download. LP format will be available July 17th.

The Light The Dead See Track Listing:

Venturing out from the studio to the road, Soulsavers were invited to support Depeche Mode on the European leg of the band’s vast 2010 Tour of the Universe. Here, the seeds of The Light The Dead See were sewn. With Gahan penning lyrics for the music and recording his own vocals in New York, then Machin building up the results into fully-formed and arranged epics, the international project was a case of “chemistry working”. The album was mastered at Abbey Road earlier this year.

“There was no real script,” says Rich Machin of the extraordinary fourth album The Light The Dead See, a set of songs of majesty and momentum. “It just rolled and rolled; it was effortless.” Joining forces with Dave Gahan it immediately became clear that this was going to be something very special. “We realized we were coming from the same place in so many ways,” adds Machin. “He’s really laid himself bare on this record, his contribution is astonishing.” Says Gahan, “Everything about it was relatively unplanned, surprising: a magical thing. We were a perfect match and I’m very, very excited about this record.”

Soulsavers – the music and production team of Rich Machin and Ian Glover – have been a growing force since 2003’s debut Tough Guys Don’t Dance. 2007’s It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s The Way You Land brought their dark flair to a wider audience. The inimitable Mark Lanegan served as primary singer, though there were also vocal contributions from Will Oldham and Jimi Goodwin. In 2009, third album Broken confirmed that Soulsavers were moving away from early electronica to earthier guitars, use of space and what Machin described as “a soulful twist.” Lanegan again led the vocals on stand-outs such as ‘You Will Miss Me When I Burn’ and ‘All The Way Down’, with other guest vocalists including Oldham again, Jason Pierce, Richard Hawley, Mike Patton and Gibby Haynes. Clearly, there was no shortage of acclai med singers ready to lend their lungs to Soulsavers’ stirring, seductive, soothing or startling creations.

Tours The US And Canada
Adds New East Coast Dates

“a mindful and welcome counterpoint to all the thrashing dubstep jockeying for his dancefloors" – The New York Times

“a stunning visual show with large-scale projections and constantly morphing linear imagery”  XLR8R

Due to fan demand, Squarepusher is extending the east coast leg of his upcoming US tour. Until this spring when he performed at NYC’s Webster Hall and at the Creators Project San Francisco instalment, Squarepusher had not played a show in the US in close to 8 years, and more than that for many of the cities he is headed to.

Squarepusher will be touring his "Ufabulum" project which encompasses both the recently released album and the live show. In contrast to most audio/visual presentations at this scale, everything was originally conceived, written, and designed by Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher), much of which was created from gear that he has designed and built himself. Each show features Squarepusher not only performing the music live, but also live producing the visuals making each show a unique experience for fans.

RACES Premiere Lies Video On Noisey / Vice

RACES Premiere Lies Video On Noisey / Vice
Announce Summer US Tour
Debut LP Year Of The Witch Out Now On Frenchkiss Records

For this video, RACES teamed up with director Edward Chase Masterson, who directed their previous music video for Big Broom. The band is excited to premiere the video for Lies on Noisey / Vice.
Wade Ryff of RACES says, "It was sort of surreal shooting this video for a number of reasons. For one, it was shot in the suburbs most of us grew up in, not even a mile from the the Sears dressing room in which I graduated from a teenager to a man, or so i thought. But also because there became this sense that we had entered the belly of the beast that feeds on the paranoia of those living in a lie. The irony of such an idealistic and peaceful neighborhood being inhabited by residents who seemed so scared to live there was something that really spoke to some of the most recent social issues that abstractly inspired this video."

Media

Press
Under The Radar : "Splits the difference between 1990s posturing and a romantic streak as long as Sunset Blvd - Creating a space where the male/female harmonies are big and the baselines are even bigger"
Magnet Magazine : "RACES (formally known as Black Jesus) aren't just fundamental indie rock. The band has put style into the classic genre, mixing catchy chords with other subtle nuances that captivates your ears’ attention."
No Fear In Pop : "Good old indie rock usually isn’t exactly our cup of tea (anymore, admittedly), but we can’t help but face the simple fact that there still is a good amount of finest, straightforwardly guitar-based music out there that does indeed evoke those same old feelings. Take as an example Los Angeles outfit RACES"
Buzzbands LA : "the sextet “melds charismatic indie-pop highlighted by the boy/girl vocals of Wade Ryff and Devon Lee, jammier psych-rock built around by guitarist’s Garth Herberg’s textures and the revivalesque energy meted out by bands such as Arcade Fire.” That’s a mouthful, but its right on.
KCRW :  "Lead vocalist, Wade Ryff, who is trained in theory and also arrangement via piano, is taking the microphone for the first time and really catching the ears of many"

AFROPUNK FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES COMPETITION

AFROPUNK FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES

THE
‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS’ COMPETITION

TOP TWO BANDS PERFORM AT 8th ANNUAL AFROPUNK FESTIVAL
@ COMMODORE BARRY PARK IN BROOKLYN
 AUGUST 25 & 26

Organizers of the 8th annual Afropunk Festival are pleased to announce that the ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition is now open. The ‘Battle of the Bands’ contest uses both a social media (online) and a live performance component. The top two bands will perform at the Afropunk Festival on August 25 and August 26, 2012. In addition to the performance, the 1st place winner receives a prize package that includes a music video directed by filmmaker Terence Nance.

The competition’s online component begins Monday, June 25, culminating with live performances from July 23 through July 26 (semi-finals), with the final battle scheduled for August 3. All performances take place at the Candy Factory in Brooklyn, New York.

Bands wishing to compete are first required to register at Afropunk.com and create a band profile. From July 1 to July 14, bands must go to the ‘Battle of the Bands’ Facebook page to enter the contest. The top 16 bands with the most online votes via Facebook will face-off at the semi-finals held between July 23 and July 26, 2012. After a series of live performances, the top four bands will be chosen by audience applause and a panel of judges to compete in the finals on August 3, where the top two bands will be selected. All battle performances take place at the Candy Factory in Brooklyn, NY as well.

Described by the New York Times as putting “rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music,” the Afropunk Festival has become an influential Brooklyn-based focal point for the burgeoning Afropunk movement.

Over the past seven years, the Afropunk Festival has established its position as a platform for musical artists on-the-verge of hitting it big, such as Grammy-nominated Santigold, The Noisettes and Janelle Monae. Afropunk mainstays like Saul Williams, The Dirtbombs, Mos Def, and Bad Brains have also graced Afropunk’s stages.

This year, the Afropunk Festival is returning to Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park for the 8th Annual Afropunk Festival on August 25-26. The 2012 festival brings together its most stellar line-up yet, featuring a diverse mix of performers including  Erykah Badu featuring the Cannibanoids, Gym Class Heroes, Janelle Monae, Das Racist, Skindred, Toro Y Moi, Reggie Watts, Spank Rock, Ninjasonik, Toshi Reagon, Straight Line Stitch, The Memorials, Bad Rabbits, Gordon Voidwell, Cerebral Ballzy, Phony Ppl, Body Language, and more to be added!

In addition, the largest Street Skate and BMX showcase returns with the Nike Battle For the Streets Skate and BMX Competition. The event will feature the nation's best amateur skaters and BMX riders in a competition to be judged by top professionals in both sports.
