ABOUT LORETTA LYNN:

Loretta Lynn has long been established as the undisputed Queen of Country Music, with more than 60 years of recording and touring. She shook up Nashville in the 1960s and 1970s by writing her own songs, many of which tackled boundary-pushing topics drawn from her own life experiences as a wife and mother.

Her unapologetic style earned Loretta twenty-two number-one singles across her career, making her one of the most awarded musicians of all time. In lyrics from “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’” and “Your Squaw Is on the Warpath,” she refused to be any man’s doormat. She challenged female rivals in “You Ain’t Woman Enough” and “Fist City.” She showed tremendous blue-collar pride in “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “You’re Lookin’ At Country.” Whether the topic was sex (“Wings Upon Your Horns”), divorce (“Rated X”), alcohol (“Wouldn’t It Be Great”), war (“Dear Uncle Sam”), or her celebration of sexual liberation (“The Pill”, which was banned on many radio stations), Loretta was unafraid of controversy.

In April 2004, a major creative resurgence occurred for Loretta when she teamed up with Jack White for the Grammy-winning album Van Lear Rose. On March 19, 2021, proving she was “Still Woman Enough”, Loretta released her 50th studio album (excluding her 10 duet album collaborations with Conway Twitty and 3 duet albums with Ernest Tubb). On it, she celebrated women in country music. From trailblazers to modern Rhinestone Cowgirls, Loretta honored Mother Maybelle Carter and the Carter Family, and featured Reba McEntire, Margo Price, Carrie Underwood, and Tanya Tucker on the record. Still Woman Enough debuted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and the Top 5 of both the American/Folk Albums and UK Country Albums charts.

Lynn’s legacy is reflected in an extraordinary list of honors. She was the first woman named Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association in 1972 and later received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. Across six decades, she earned 18 Grammy nominations, winning three competitive Grammys along with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

Her story also reached audiences beyond her music. Her autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter, became a New York Times bestseller, which became a film of the same name, and won Sissy Spacek an Oscar for her portrayal of Lynn.

Loretta passed away in October 2022. Her legacy and impact continue to inspire generations of songwriters and everyday Americans today. From Butcher Holler to the silver screen and Broadway, Loretta’s life serves as a powerful example of resilience, independence, and the courage to speak one’s truth.
