The Hotel have announced details of the first-time edition of London Orbital, Bruce Gilbert’s visionary sound work for the 2002 film of the same name directed by Chris Petit and Iain Sinclair. The vinyl edition is out on 27 November 2026.
London Orbital is a film about the M25, the circular motorway that surrounds London in its outer edges, commissioned by Channel 4 and loosely based on Iain Sinclair’s 2000 novel, which saw the author walk the entire length of the Orbital motorway over a two-year period. Chris Petit took this concept further by electing to drive around the motorway, using nascent digital techniques and CCTV footage to evoke the atmospherics, beauty and unusually terrifying nature of the endless motorway.
In London Orbital, the circular motorway deployed as a metaphor for the outer orbits of the mind, driving around the motorway as an exercise in forward projection, and a quest for transcendental boredom and extreme impersonality.
The Hotel presents London Orbital not as a soundtrack record, but as a sound film. An evocative listening experience that is just as if not more hallucinogenic and hypnagogic as the theatrical viewing experience. The album’s accompanying booklet carries extensive stills from the film alongside newly-commissioned essays by Chris Petit and Iain Sinclair.
