(Aug 12th, 2026) – LA-raised, NYC-based Darla Dean Lewis steps onto the scene with the announcement of her debut EP We’re Gonna Fly due Sept 25th via Cascine. A five-track project fusing dynamic, diaristic lyricism with dancefloor sensibilities alongside a maximalist pop vision, Darla shares a first taste of what’s to come with her new single “1979” out today.
Produced by Micah Gordon and Lucas Padulo, the track captures the push and pull of a relationship on the brink, where devotion persists despite the inevitable. If the song shares anything beyond its title with the iconic Smashing Pumpkins classic, it's a feeling of fleeting youth, unfolding across a widescreen, shimmering soundscape. Lewis sings, in a breadth of fresh air, "Reminds me / Of 19 / 79 / We're gonna fly / Open the window," before the chorus gives way to a radiant synth solo.
Across the EP Lewis locates an innate sense of childlike wonder while pairing some of her best phrases with clever tonal shifts. We’re Gonna Fly is irresistibly playful, nostalgic, and sparkling, navigating between the absurd and the sentimental. While Lewis writes from an earnest, carefree mindset, repeated listens reveal a tinge of longing. In Darla Dean Lewis’s world, everything is given a taste of make-believe.
Listen to “1979” and stay tuned for much more from Lewis coming soon. |
