Canadian indie rock favorites, Gizmo, have announced their debut album, All Your Worships, due out October 2 via Victory Pool. The Charlottetown four-piece have a sound inspired by the guitar-damaged pop of 1990s American slacker bands and their contemporaries on Canada's east coast. Their carefully crafted songwriting and frenetic live shows breathe new life into familiar sounds, making them one of Canada's most exciting emerging bands.
Today, the band shares new single "Pantone 312," a wistful blend of folk and Midwest emo built around conversational storytelling. More intimate than the album's guitar-forward anthems, it offers a quieter glimpse into the emotional core of All Your Worships.
"Pantone was written about 10 hours before I arrived to the first studio recording day for All Your Worships," frontman Julien Kitson shares. "The song’s first lyric and melody came to me in September 2024, but I couldn’t reach a final product until 5 months later, which includes lyrical nods to David Berman and The Rankin Family. We couldn’t squeeze in time to bring it to life during the album sessions, which led to myself and Loel taking it on in his home studio on a muggy April day. The final product became the album’s closer and a new favourite of ours in our live set."
All Your Worships, comes roaring out of the gate, picking up right where 2023's livewire Buddy System EP left off without skipping a beat. The new material finds the band mining similar sources but reaching new heights, imbuing their carefully considered, structurally ambitious power-pop songwriting with more unexpected twists and turns.
To record it, the band decamped to a converted community hall in Great Village, Nova Scotia, with co-producers Alex Edkins (METZ, Weird Nightmare) and Loel Campbell (Wintersleep) in tow. They pulled 12-hour days, sleeping at the studio and capping off nights with drunken music listening sessions. The group bonded over their overlapping tastes, sharing a common language when referring to sounds and directions. This helped flesh out the sound; while the record is informed by long-held aesthetic touchpoints like Guided By Voices and Pavement, keen listeners will hear the gothic jangle of REM or the jagged Americana of Silver Jews peeking through in spots as well. Edkins and Campbell mixed the record, with Greg Obis (Stuck, clearance) providing the finishing touches at Chicago Mastering Service.
All Your Worships is a 10-track mission statement from the rare breed of band that arrives fully formed, confidently settling into their first LP and suggesting myriad possibilities for the future.
"Pantone 312" is out July 15th. All Your Worships LP is out 10/2 via Victory Pool. |
