20 years into her dynamic and fruitfully collaborative musical career, THAO has ceremonially shed the band name. Today she shares her first new single in six years, “Fossils”, released via previous label home Kill Rock Stars alongside an official video that encapsulates the song’s joyful message. “Fossils” drives and thrives with propulsive drum fills, lilting synths, yearning guitar riffs and heart catching lines. By the end, the voices come in ecstatic, imploring waves: first THAO and her co-producers Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner of Tune-Yards, then her Bay Area Monday Night Dinner crew (including chef and Salt Fat Acid Heat author Samin Nosrat, writer Sarah Rich, and KQED Forum host Alexis Madrigal) then a litany of friends and their children, colleagues and fans who sent in recordings. With her distinctly fetching delivery and deeply heartfelt, incisive lyricism, THAO implores us and herself to stay open to love and each other.

“Fossils is both a red-flag warning and an encouragement,” THAO says. “I’m saying I can see it all, I can zoom out and up and see how I and we will have reached the end, frozen in these protective stances. The danger of underliving our lives is real, is in every isolationist choice we make. However, we can continually decide to be different. It takes enormous amounts of work to metabolize fear instead of being based in it. It is so easy to slip into the grooves of self protection.”
Collaboration will always be part of THAO’s creative galaxy which has included everything from guest-hosting the famed Song Exploder podcast, stunning musical collaborations with Mirah and Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards as well as hosting the PBS show Southern Songs in 2023 and performing alongside Radiolab hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich + on Fred Armisen’s 2018 Netflix special, Standup for Drummers. With her new single, THAO teases something special coming soon. Until then, fans can catch her captivating live show as she hits the road this weekend supporting Lord Huron.
