Howard Paar helped shape Los Angeles culture before most people knew it was happening. A London native who landed in L.A. at a pivotal moment, Paar founded The ON Klub, a legendary underground venue that became a breeding ground for punk, ska, mod, the Paisley Underground—and the first live rap shows in the city, in collaboration with Sugar Hill Records.
That same instinct for uncovering hidden worlds drives his fiction. His novels Once Upon a Time in L.A. and Top Rankin’ are raw, noir-inflected portraits of music, crime, and subculture, drawn from the margins of a city in constant reinvention. Whether building scenes or writing about them, Paar’s work captures culture at the moment it ignites.
