Hard rock band SEA HAGS announce previously unreleased 1985 album 'Dead & Gone'

SAN FRANCISCO HARD ROCK BAND SEA HAGS RISE FROM THE DEEP WITH THE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED DEAD & GONE

AFTER DEMO SESSIONS WITH KIRK HAMMETT OF METALLICA, SEA HAGS SIGNED TO CHRYSALIS RECORDS IN 1987 AND RECORDED THEIR SELF-TITLED DEBUT WITH PRODUCER MIKE CLINK (GUNS N’ ROSES’ APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | July 15, 2025 — Liberation Hall returns to the San Francisco underground with the announcement of Dead & Gone, a previously unreleased 10-song live set from the hard rock band Sea Hags. Dead & Gone arrives in stores September 12 on CD & digital from Liberation Hall, distributed by MVD Entertainment Group (USA) and Wienerworld (UK).

Pre-order Dead & Gone at Bandcamp. First digital single “Doghouse” is out today.

Sea Hags formed on New Year’s Day, 1985, comprising singer/guitarist Ron Yocom, bassist Chris Schlosshardt, and drummer Greg Langston. Yocom and Schlosshardt had previously played together in Santa Rosa trio the Tearaways. Upon relocating to San Francisco, they drafted in drummer Greg Langston, already a scene veteran with such groups as Tuxedomoon, No Alternative, Fade to Black, and Beast featuring ex-Cramps guitarist Bryan Gregory.

By May, Sea Hags were gigging regularly. “I came from the punk scene,” said Langston. “Initially, Sea Hags were playing slower, ‘riff-rock’ oriented stuff, a kind of proto-grunge.” The group’s tempos eventually sped up as they opened shows for Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, Johnny Thunders, Circle Jerks, X, Suicidal Tendencies, and Motörhead.

Sea Hags’ first cassette demo, the six-song The Hag of the Sea was produced in early 1986 by Sylvia Massy and Kirk Hammett; the Metallica guitarist played on two of the tracks. Distributed on cassette at shows, it sold out quickly. As the band improved, soon a second demo was needed.

On September 3, Sea Hags were firing on all cylinders when they stepped in front of an audience of 60 enthusiastic fans at CD Studios. It’s this live demo recording that is now making its official debut on CD & digital. Dead & Gone captures Sea Hags delivering a type of sleaze rock that would soon be highly bankable on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. Opener “Huntin’ for Dad” gets pulses racing with Yocom’s snarling vocals, followed by additional newly-discovered nuggets like the swaggering “Happy Hours with You,” the “too much junkie business” grind of “Dead and Gone,” the metallic blues of “King Bee Blues,” and the tense and atmospheric “Cock Eyed Crow.”

Despite its low budget, the demo served its purpose. Sea Hags were signed to Chrysalis Records in December 1987. But at the label’s insistence, Langston would be replaced, and a second guitarist was added. The original trio was defunct as Sea Hags entered the studio with producer Mike Clink (Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction) to record their eponymous debut album. That album would include new versions of “Doghouse” and “Back to the Grind,” two tracks which appear in earlier versions on Dead & Gone.

Within ten months of the release of the Sea Hags’ major label debut, the band had splintered. “I missed the crash and burn,” recalled Langston. By the time he stepped off the drum stool on April 28, 1988, he had played over 300 shows with the band. Langston continues to be a gigging Bay Area drummer with No Alternative, Screaming Bloody Marys, and the Next.

Dead & Gone features a new liner notes essay by Bill Kopp, author of Disturbing the Peace: 415 Records and the Rise of New Wave (HoZac Books, 2021).
