“songs so good they transcend the Petty comparison”

“Campbell is, to put it succinctly, an American treasure.”

“[Campbell] has finally found his voice.”

“[Campbell] has emerged as the keeper of The Heartbreakers’ flame…
he’s grown into a singer, lyricist and frontman in his own right.”
June 6, 2025—Celebrated guitarist and songwriter Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac) and his band The Dirty Knobs are debuting their new single “Heart of the Heartland;” stream/share the track HERE.
“‘Heart of the Heartland’ is a song I’m very proud of,” notes Campbell. He goes on, “It’s kind of like a travelogue through the middle of America. The music is very simple, but the lyrics refer to a lot of American landscapes and sentiments. Many of the images are drawn from things I’ve seen in my travels through the heartland over the years. It was also really fun to have strings on the song, thanks to Patrick Warren’s arrangement.”
The track comes as the band kicks off their summer tour dates throughout Canada and the U.S. Upcoming dates include a pair of performances in Grand Rapids, MI with Chris Stapleton as well as a run of co-headlining shows with Blackberry Smoke and opener Shannon McNally across the Southeast; see below for a complete list of dates.
Campbell most recently released his New York Times Best Selling memoir Heartbreaker, written with Ari Surdoval, out now via Grand Central Publishing. The book continues to see extensive critical acclaim:

“essential…[a] vividly told new autobiography”

Heartbreaker is a tale of endurance and patience rewarded.”

“Some of the book’s most endearing stories are when Campbell, closely associated
with Tom Petty, worked alongside and elevated the careers of legends such as Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Don Henley—all of whom benefited from his improvisational
playing style and seemingly never-ending supply of songs.”

“The depth and detail in the 464-page Heartbreaker: A Memoir is impressive—and surprising...it’s spirit-lifting in spots, heart-breaking in others, and it offers a deep and revealing dive that will please Petty fans and guitar geeks alike.”
Campbell & The Knobs’ latest acclaimed full-length Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits is out now on BMG. The album features appearances from Lucinda WilliamsGraham NashChris Stapleton and fellow Heartbreaker Benmont TenchSalon hails the record as a “their best album yet,” while Ultimate Classic Rock notes that Campbell has “really grown into [his] role as a lead singer” and Premier Guitar raves that the record is “the most expansive and dynamic album of the Dirty Knobs’ one-of-a-kind ride.”
