November 22, 2024 - Swedish singer-songwriter Winona Oak shares her intensely personal and sincere new single ‘My Body’ and announces a brand-new 4-track EP Salt, out February 7.
In "My Body," Winona Oak delivers an open letter to her own physical form, candidly reflecting on years of struggling with restrictive eating, depression, and body dysmorphia. The song builds with haunting yet empowering synths, mirroring the emotional weight of her journey. Lyrically, it explores the ways media and society fuel insecurities, amplifying the pressure to conform to an idealized version of oneself.
Winona says, “This song has opened up a freedom for me I didn't know I needed. Writing this song forced a realization that I needed to forgive myself for the way I had treated myself as a teenager and as an adult. I think as we get older, we slowly (hopefully) realize that we need to be kinder to ourselves, but what I think we miss is that is just the first step – we need to forgive ourselves for speaking negatively to our bodies and ourselves in the past.”
“I'm still in the middle of this journey but I hope this song allows others the same realization of healing and forgiveness. ALL bodies are beautiful, and we are all worthy to be in charge of them – apologize to your body if you've spoken badly toward it, it is a beautiful creation that deserves love.”
Her forthcoming EP Salt follows her EP Void released earlier this year, which was a heartfelt and poignant journal after devastatingly losing her mother to cancer. Salt is a striking 4-track collection of shimmering electro-pop, offering an intimate exploration of her physical and emotional journey. This new body of work reveals a profound sense of self-discovery and compassion, capturing the personal growth and healing that have emerged from her experience.
Winona says, “I wanted to write about topics that I wanted to get out of my system, but I hadn't felt brave enough to do when I was younger. Every song on this EP has been like a therapy session - writing about these subjects has been like putting salt in the wounds, but also salt from crying tears.”
With her recent music, Winona Oak has embraced a more unfiltered approach to songwriting, allowing her poetic voice to shine through. The result is some of her most raw and authentic work to date, infused with a profound depth of emotion. Her EP Void marked a bold new chapter in her musical journey, and her upcoming EP Salt continues to build on this powerful evolution.
