PRAISE FOR HOT GARBAGE
"Reminding us to let go of things that no longer serve, the hopeful tinges of 'Erase My Mind' is complemented by gritty emotive stylings and monumental psychedelic peaks [...] manages to balance the band’s signature moodiness with soaring elements." - EARMILK
"a noisy blast of psych-rock" - Brooklyn Vegan
"'Snooze You Lose' delivers a dynamite jolt, zipping past with manic chuckles, sharp punk licks, and distinctively eccentric production from Holy Fuck’s Graham Walsh. This gritty, mocking tune does more than merely dazzle — it sends your senses spinning, thanks to thunderous beats, supremely warped bass, guitar, and organ, and echoing voices floating over a foreboding surge of sound and resonance." - Post-Punk
"Hot Garbage dive deeper into their brutalist, post-punk and psychedelia roots at full throttle with their new album — something made overwhelmingly clear by 'Snooze You Lose' alone, which busts the door open in a barrage of distortion, feedback and maniacal laughter." - Exclaim!
"I was hooked from the first listen as, once again, Hot Garbage have delivered another psychedelic trip which transports the listener elsewhere." - Louder Than War
"There’s no 'mystery' of what you’re getting from Hot Garbage today: a brilliant slab of modern psych rock, bringing together many memorable sounds from many memorable musical eras. [...] With fuzzed-out riffs and an acid-rock feel, ['Mystery'] tells the curious story of Judy and Billy. It paints an intense, hypnotic musical canvas about voluntary amnesia and dreamy confusion." - V13 |

Today, Toronto rockers Hot Garbage return with their sophomore album, Precious Dream, out now via Mothland and EXAG’ Records.
Though the band's signature tinge of moody, heavy psychedelia remains present on Precious Dream, the sophomore album careens at high speeds into a darker world of searing post-punk riffs, grappling with themes of dread, loss, the resilience of the human spirit and the highs and lows of solitude. From the onset, elegant yet brutalist sonic architectures provide the scenery for an escape route, while cryptic poetic spurts act as surreal signage. By the end of the journey, we are left with a strangely pleasant void, but also with an uncontrollable urge to backtrack into the outfit’s beautiful 36-minute musical trap.
True to form, prolific producer Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck, No Joy, !!!, etc.) – with whom, Hot Garbage recorded their critically-acclaimed debut full-length, RIDE – does right by the band, masterfully harnessing the four-piece’s unique brand of rock & roll, setting in motion a parallel universe where phones are not what they seem, lobotomy has its merits, lower is actually better, and tunnels stretch the very fabric of spacetime. Fans of Sonic Youth, Frankie and the Witch Fingers or Joy Division should welcome a confused stroll down this romantic if dystopian opus, for a cathartic and tender sense of resolution awaits.
As the band notes on their new release and its creation:
"Precious Dream is a collection of intense psych doomy punk songs, mainly written while processing heavy feelings. It was made in isolation, so it sounds different from something made through a collaborative process. It was mostly made remotely and pieced together after the songs were complete.
The album was recorded at Palace Sound in Toronto with Graham Walsh. Like the last record, it’s mostly recorded live off the floor. We used the developed chemistry to delve a little deeper into creating a more cohesive sound. Graham is always open and receptive to our vision, and is always down for off-the-wall experimentation.
We made the album art ourselves. It features photos Alex took at home and on tour in Europe. It’s meant to be both brutal and pretty, like the record." |

| Introduced in the last few months with singles "Snooze You Lose" and "Mystery," Precious Dream is celebrated further today with a new video for focus track, "Erase My Mind." "Erase My Mind" is an alluring slow jam about clearing your head from unwanted thoughts. Fueled by a solemn drum loop, and featuring minimalistic guitar voicings as well as what could very well be a Casavant Frères organ run through a 10-story high Leslie cabinet, this monumental cathedral of a song promises to melt the heart of hopeless romantics and cynics alike…A psychedelic tearjerker for the ages. Speaking on the track, the band wrote: "'Erase My Mind' is about letting go of things that don’t serve you anymore."
Video director Laura-Lynn Petrick also notes:
"'Erase My Mind' is a gritty emotive montage of Hot Garbage immersed in a brutalist haven, as they observe emotive & textural sights. When I heard the song, I wanted to create something that felt like a Corbusier-style moving mirage – slightly non-linear, visually striking and modular – to match the song's tone." The full-length Precious Dream LP is out today via Mothland / EXAG' Records. Stay tuned for more from Hot Garbage, coming soon. |

| In addition to their LP announcement, Hot Garbage has also just been announced as part of the 2024 SXSW lineup. Stay tuned for more information, coming soon. |

| Hot Garbage Bio: Hot Garbage melt into a heavily volatile yet undeniably palatable amalgamation of sonic elements. Calling on the driving rhythms of dark post-punk and motorik krautrock, the Toronto-based outfit seamlessly works shining melodies and swirling textures into deliberate, brooding arrangements. Fans of Sonic Youth, Broadcast and 70’s era Iggy Pop should no doubt find a familiar pull into their raw sound, which draws inspiration from a wide and eclectic range of musical genres and art forms. Following the release of EPs Max Blonda in November 2017 and Coco’s Paradise in April 2019, Hot Garbage entered the studio with Juno-nominated producer Graham Walsh (of evil experimental Toronto supergroup Holy Fuck) in early 2020 to cut a selection of tracks live off the floor. The result was a blazing standalone single, "Easy Believer," and the group’s debut long play offering, RIDE, composed of 33 reverb-soaked minutes to be pressed to vinyl and released on Mothland in October 2021. The debut full-length quickly made its way into SiriusXM rotation via CBC Radio 3 and The Verge, while also climbing to #3 on the Earshot Top 50 and #82 on the NACC Top 200. Stephan Boissonneault at Aquarium Drunkard refers to the album as “a feasts for the senses containing fuzz-filled riffs, whirling organ, an adept utilization of post-punk auxiliary percussion, and hypnotic vox,” adding that “it’s the kind of album you throw on loud when you want to get lost and laugh into the void.” British critic Iain Key at Louder Than War stoically bestows his seal of approval: “Highly Recommended.” Aside from studio endeavours, Hot Garbage have toured extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom, bringing their intense live sets to festival slots at LEVITATION (Austin, TX), SXSW (Austin, TX), Treefort Music Fest (Boise, ID), Freakout Fest (Seattle, WA), Sled Island (Calgary, AB), Sappyfest (Sackville, NB), FME (Rouyn-Noranda, QC), M for Montreal (Montreal, QC), and Pop Montreal (Montreal, QC) as well as on tour with L.A. Witch and Frankie & The Witch Fingers. They have also shared the stage with Osees, Ty Segall, JJUUJJUU, Mdou Moctar, Wand, Kikagaku Moyo, and Dead Meadow. After catching them live, Ben Lemieux at Quip Magazine concludes that “the band understands the theatrically implied expectations of the genre, striking a perfect balance between the gossamer vocal quality of early shoegaze and the cranked-up, guitar pyrotechnics emblematic of the 60s and 70s rockers.” The quartet now returns with Precious Dream, a sprawling collection of songs written in isolation and brought together in studio in late 2022 with visionary producer Graham Walsh (METZ, Preoccupations, Holy Fuck, !!!) at the helm once again, offering an exhilarating new breath into the world of post-punk and modern psychedelia, a listening experience that is equally cathartic and introspective. Hot Garbage’s sophomore album is out now via Mothland (NA) and Exag’ Records (EU/UK). |
