November 9, 2022---For the Birds: The Birdsong Project---the new sweeping collection of 242 recordings by leading artists inspired by birdsong—continues to inspire artists and partners with its mission to celebrate birdsong and support the conservation of birds and their habitats. In a collaboration with renowned street artist Shepard Fairey (creator of the iconic “Hope” portrait of President Obama),The Birdsong Project has announced an exclusive print. Only 450 limited-edition prints will be available for purchase.

“I'm concerned about the health of our planet, and I'm very aware that declining bird populations are an early indication of serious ecological problems on the horizon,” said Shepard Fairey. “I also love birds and don't want to see Rachel Carson's warning from "Silent Spring" of a future without birds come to pass. My print The Birdsong Project (Another Day In the Coal Mine) is a scene of sun, flowers, and a Summer Tanager, a beautiful red bird that was once extremely common but has seen a concerning decline in its population. My print is a vision of what we almost all find beautiful but can no longer take for granted. I don't want this print to be a nostalgic picture of a romantic time that once was. Let's protect the birds for our time and the future of the planet!”

Print details: Birdsong Project. 18 x 24 inches. Screen print on thick cream Speckletone paper. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 450. A partnership with leading mindfulness and meditation app Calm brings a new release entitled Sound Bath Hummingbirds, available now on the Calm app. The eight-track audio release was composed by musician/vocalist WATA, a West African and Black American violinist, singer, songwriter and compositionist. WATA self-recorded the tracks while in an Airbnb in Istanbul. Her compositions are ethereal soundscapes that unify ancient sound traditions with innovative modern lyricism and alternative arrangements. Her vocals are inspired by nature — especially the rhythms of water and she taps into the collective consciousness and imbues it with the healing power of sound. This is WATA’s second drop for the Calm app, with her first being a year-long partnership to compose monthly Astrological-inspired sound baths for the new moon in 2021. Just last week on November 3, Calm hosted an event to support the release at Debs Park. Partners included the Audubon Society, Floating, and The Birdsong Project. Listen to Sound Bath Hummingbirds HERE.

Composer WATA said, “When asked to compose a track for The Birdsong Project, I was excited for the opportunity to learn the language of the birds. I listened to field recordings of various hummingbird species and mimicked the cadence, tone, and rhythm of their songs with my voice. This track is a love letter to nature and a study of her creations.”

The Birdsong Project is also collaborating with Mollusk Surf Shop to create limited edition merch including t-shirts and hats. Shop HERE.

"Mollusk loves clams, beavers, the sea, air, and birds! Birdsong invited us to send some love letters to ducks, pelicans, and seagulls in the form of t-shirts and hats, designs are from Nathaniel Russell and Dave Muller, and the logo drawn by Thomas Campbell. This is our humble offering," says John McCambridge, creator of Mollusk.

The project’s full collection is now available as a limited-edition 20-LP deluxe box set which features a 60-page book and essay by musician-ornithologist Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater and a package bursting with paintings and illustrations of birds by well-known artists. All five volumes of The Birdsong Project are now available for streaming on all platforms.

ABOUT SHEPARD FAIREY

Frank Shepard Fairey was born in Charleston, South Carolina and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Illustration. In his early career he was a graffiti artist---spray painting, putting stickers on street signs, and running from the cops. In college he started making his own T-shirts and stickers. One of his most famous sticker campaigns was the “Andre the Giant” campaign (later named the “Obey Giant” campaign), created in 1989 while in college. Fairey’s main goal was to spark curiosity in the viewers and have them question the world around them.

In 2008 Fairey took his design skills to supporting the Obama campaign. He created the famous “Hope” poster. The poster was not originally endorsed officially by the Obama campaign, but the image quickly became the face of the campaign. Fairey is a great example of a street artist who has had his fair share of trouble with the law but is able to use his art to reach millions, while making a living for himself. In 2009, Fairey had his first museum exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, named after the book he released in 2006, “Supply and Demand.” It included most of the artwork today incorporated into Fairey’s popular clothing brand, Obey. Fairey created the Obey brand as an extension of his work, with clothing serving as another canvas to spread his messages. Shepard Fairey explains that the real meaning behind most of his artwork is to question everything. Despite Fairey’s quarrels in court and with other artists he remains one of the most popular and well-known street artists today.
