The story of FARRINGTON+MANN dates back to before 1986 when Andrew Mann was recruited by Clive Farrington to replace departed members of his Manchester-based group Beau Leisure after Mann had supported them as a beat poet on numerous shows. They began to write songs together and recorded some demos — sometimes including Mann's friend Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister) — while seeking a recording deal.

After writing the demo for “The Promise,” the duo were then signed by Virgin UK subsidiary 10 Records’ Mick Clark. Producers Ben Rogan (who had worked with Sade) and Richard James Burgess took special interest in "The Promise.” Around 1986, original keyboard player Michael Floreale’s cousin was about to leave UK shores for a new job and life in San Francisco and was given a 12” vinyl recording of the song to take with him. He took the record directly to Live 105 and they immediately liked it and put it on heavy rotation. From there, the song spread like wildfire across all the major stations in the U.S.

When “The Promise” became popular, hitting the top of Billboard's Dance Club Play chart, Virgin ordered an album. A remixed version of "The Promise" was the first single from their self-titled debut album and it was an instant success, barely missing the Top Ten in the U.S. by peaking at No. 11 months later.

Fast forward to 2003, Farrington received an unexpected call from Floreale who was now living in Dallas, TX. The call revolved around filmmaker Jared Hess wanting to use “The Promise” in a new film he had just made. The indie comedy Napoleon Dynamite was then released a year later in 2004 and prominently featured the “The Promise” as the end theme and in the closing credits, introducing the iconic song to an entirely new generation.
