"Profound Mysteries… lives up to Röyksopp’s reputation as a duo that has perfected the art of dishing out electronic hugs… they stay on the right side of arty party and continue to attract veterans, as well as visually stimulated newbies, to the wavy ocean of Nordic electronica." - LINE OF BEST FIT, 8/10 review
"With the idea of the studio album being questioned and the place of pop music in our culture – as well as blurring the boundaries of pop music and pop art – being assessed, work like Profound Mysteries elevates the conversation. But most importantly, the music on Profound Mysteries doesn’t struggle or collapse under the weight of Röyksopp’s artistic ambitions: the music is some of their canniest and most absorbing.” - POPMATTERS, 9/10 review
“Röyksopp have birthed an engaging, expressive multi media universe suspended in digital mystery, a sum of many components meticulously executed. Profound Mysteries truly captures the imagination, and excitingly hints at the next leg of this perceptual voyage: Simply 'Press R' to continue…” - CLASH, 9/10 review
“What’s undeniable is that Röyksopp has lost none of its rightfully earned early-2000s cachet, nor its connection with film and technology.” - FLOOD
Almost eight years since their last album, Röyksopp have returned with an expansive new project, the much anticipated Profound Mysteries, which is available today. Profound Mysteries is an ambitious mix of music and conceptual art. Every month since January 1st, 2022 Röyksopp have revealed an installment from Profound Mysteries, created collaboratively with a multitude of artists.
“As human beings, what we don’t know vastly overshadows what we do know. As teenagers, we would discuss our own fascination and preoccupation with the infinite and the impossible – the most profound mysteries of life.” - Svein Berge & Torbjørn Brundtland
Today, all 10 installments are revealed as a body of work that includes sonic collaborations with Alison Goldfrapp (Impossible - which went straight on to the A-List at BBC6 Music), Astrid S (Breathe), and Susanne Sundfør (If You Want Me), each accompanied by a short film created by a director from one of Europe’s premier film production companies; Bacon. In addition to directing (Nothing But) Ashes... themselves, Röyksopp have worked with nine of Bacon’s internationally acclaimed directors, including Andreas Nilsson and Martin de Thurah, to bring each track from Profound Mysteries to life. An artefact and visualizer for each build the Profound Mysteries immersive universe further, created by Australian contemporary artist Jonathan Zawada.
