Offering an inside look at the songwriting and demo process, Blitzen Trapper will release Holy Demos Future Demos as a Bandcamp exclusive May 7. A demo version of their 2020 Yep Roc debut, Holy Smokes Future Jokes, the digital-only album will be available at all DSPs May 14. Today, Brooklyn Vegan premieres “Sons And Unwed Mothers.”

"I wanted to share these demos as a way to allow fans a peek into my process, into the bedroom feel of writing and trying to capture a mood or a place in moments,” explains Eric Earley, frontman/songwriter. “These demos are similar in ways to their studio counterparts, but they contain that intimacy, that seed of genesis that can sometimes disappear in the studio setting. The drums are funky little drum machine place keepers, some of the bass and a couple guitar solos I ended up keeping through the studio sessions but everything else is my initial unheard take, at home, attempting to see where the songs needed to go.”

Filmed in Portland, OR, Blitzen Trapper’s “Live In The Living Room” Bandcamp Live performance is slated for May 7. The first band performance since last fall’s release of Holy Smokes Future Jokes, the lineup includes Eric Earley joined by Brian Adrian Koch (drums/vocals), Nathan Vanderpool (bass/vocals), and Michael Blake (guitar/piano).

Led by existential questions about life and death, Holy Smokes Future Jokes ruminates on the intermediate period between a person’s separate lives on earth, “and what it means to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth,” Earley explains, and takes the listener on a wild and dramatic journey through the Bardo, that transitional state between death and rebirth.

With an inherent otherworldliness in the lyrics and imagery, the album’s ten songs take inspiration from several works, notably George Saunders’ 2017 Lincoln in the Bardo, which led to Bardo Thodol, more commonly known as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Upon release last fall, Holy Smokes Future Jokes garnered praise from MOJO, American Songwriter, SPIN, A.V. Club, among others, and was included in NPR’s New Music Friday notable releases.

Over a 20-year career and ten full-length albums, Eric Earley has written, recorded and toured extensively as Blitzen Trapper, amassing a devoted fan base and earning critical praise from a vast array of media that includes The New York Times, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Paste, Pitchfork, SPIN, New York Magazine and Consequence of Sound.
