Acclaimed UK producer Daniel Avery and celebrated experimental musician and Nine Inch Nails synth artist Alessandro Cortini today share the gloriously immersive “Enter Exit”, a second taste of their debut full-length collaboration, Illusion of Time. The record will be available March 27 on Mute/Phantasy in the United States and Canada and via Phantasy worldwide. “Enter Exit” sees the pair build warm, layered synths to an exquisite crescendo. Watch the video and pre-order Illusion of Time, including the limited edition heavyweight transparent magenta vinyl, here.
“Enter Exit” follows the release of title track “Illusion of Time” and its accompanying video which was directed by Sam Davis and Tom Andrew. Watch the atmospheric clip here.
Earlier this week, Avery was added to the line-up for inaugural UK music, architecture and design festival Kingdom, taking place at Belvoir Castle in Grantham, England July 24-26. The London-based producer is set to collaborate with Dutch visual artist and former Trouw resident Heleen Blanken on a bespoke stage design for the festival, taking place in a forest clearing. Cortini, meanwhile, recently soundtracked Fendi’s Autumn 2020 ready-to-wear show in Milan, performing a live synth soundscape at the event last week. Watch the highlights here.
Both artists are set to appear at London’s upcoming RE-TEXTURED festival, with Cortini presenting a live AV performance of his critically acclaimed Volume Massimo album at the BFI on April 2, while Avery helms the late night portion at E1 London on April 4. The previous night, new arrangements of Avery’s work will be performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra at BBC Radio 3’s Unclassified Live in the Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall.
MORE ABOUT ILLUSION OF TIME
Beginning as a collaborative experiment before the pair had even met, Avery and Cortini worked remotely and free of concept or deadline over several years. The result, finally completed when both artists were touring with Nine Inch Nails in 2018, is a quietly powerful album rooted in trust, process and experimentation.
Gently challenging the hypnotic ideals of ambience that already united the work of both artists, Illusion of Time is equal parts cryptic and inviting. Wistful chords are boldly buried beneath blankets of soothing noise, as if asking listeners to lean in further. In other moments, Avery and Cortini achieve catharsis when working through bristling electronics more indebted to their heavier influences. More frequently, the soothing analog textures that drive the album are allowed to linger alone, stripped back in order to conjure the moments of suspended bliss that give the album its title.
