Today, Grammy Award-winning R&B icon Raphael Saadiq releases “Glory To The Veins,” the second track from his forthcoming album Jimmy Lee, out August 23rd on Columbia Records. Over an intoxicated, churning beat, Raphael gazes deeply into his brother’s psyche to explore and find buoyancy through the darkness of addiction.
Self-produced by Raphael at Blakeslee Recording Co. in North Hollywood, Jimmy Lee — his first album in eight years — explores a range of themes inspired by his brother: escape, pleasure, pain, and incarceration. The production is unlike anything that Raphael has done before, incorporating darker atmospheres, murky bass textures, and an incredibly adventurous sonic palette. The result is an emotionally stirring, indelible work from one of the genre’s true masters.
Lead single “Something Keeps Calling” “captures the desperation of an addiction, the sense of being stuck forever” (NY Times), listen here: https://youtu.be/bRvD6fWJsJQ
Following appearances at Essence Fest this weekend and Afropunk Paris later this month, Raphael Saadiq will play select headlining dates in August and September; see below for a full list of upcoming shows.
