Following the recent release of their critically lauded second studio album,
Love Hates What You Become,
Lost Under Heaven today share a video for the re-worked version of “
Black Sun Rising.” Watch
“Black Sun Rising (Expanded)” here.
“Black Sun Rising” began in a series of dreams Lost Under Heaven’s
Ebony Hoorn had during the spring of 2016. Repeatedly, she found herself looking out from a high-rise window to an unknown city submerged in a dense smog of ash, the sun a deep burning red eclipse keeping the city in a perpetual half-light. The dream was understandably troubling, having a prophetic quality aligned with the increasingly alarming projections of climate change. Working with her partner,
Ellery Roberts, they channeled the symbolism of the dream into a poem that would become the lyrical basis for the song “Black Sun Rising.”
The particulars of the dream imagery were later returned to when Ebony directed the accompanying music video. After seeing the initial treatment, Ellery felt it necessary to embellish the sparse original composition with a string section to realize the cinematic potential.
