The Mynabirds Release New Video
For “Velveteen”
Kick Off West Coast Tour This Week
“The Mynabirds’ video for “Velveteen” is a beautiful blood bath” - Noisey
"Lovers Know sounds like a collection of jewels, bright and eclectic... [and] writ larger than anything else Burhenn has done with The Mynabirds." - NPR
“Don’t be surprised to find yourself falling in regretless love as you watch her…” - KEXP
The Mynabirds (moniker of singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn) have just released a beautifully bloody, vampire themed video to accompany track “Velveteen”, which comes off album Lovers Know released last August via Saddle Creek. Premiered on Noisey, the video was directed by director-duo LEAN (Luke Hanlein & Ian Roche) and produced by Matthew Berkowitz & Jeff Katz through Nero-Films. Burhenn says of the visual, “I’m really proud of this video. It’s the darkest (and bloodiest) thing I’ve ever made, and the vampire narrative the directors (Luke Hanlein and Ian Roche) put into it adds a dimension to the song that makes it feel like something fresh, even to me. I love it.”
Following the release of the video, The Mynabirds will kick off on a west coast tour later this week with a new, intimate and orchestral arrangement of Burhenn’s songs. In the way of spring cleaning, Laura is stripping her songs back to bare bones, and fleshing them out with strings and other organic instrumentation. She’ll present songs she’s toured from all her albums, as well as some new and un-released material, in a whole new way.
Lovers Know, The Mynabirds’ third album (released August 4, 2015 on Saddle Creek), was recorded over a yearlong period in Los Angeles, Joshua Tree, Nashville, and Auckland, New Zealand. It’s definitely new territory for Burhenn, forging into 80s, 90s and futuristic soundscapes, recalling Kate Bush, Sinead O’Connor, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and even 90s hip hop and R&B. The album may be loaded with a fresh palette of new sounds (swarms of synths, gauzy electric guitars, and electronic drums), but her brooding, unmistakable voice leads the way.
Burhenn has released two previous albums as The Mynabirds on Saddle Creek, What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood (2010) and GENERALS (2012), both of which were produced by Richard Swift and met by critical acclaim.
