Knitting Factory Records is pleased to announce Seun Kuti & Egypt 80's new Higher Conciousness Remixes EP, out digitally next Tuesday, June 9. The band have shared a stream and download of internationally acclaimed DJ & producer Simbad's dub remix of the title track on SoundCloud. The EP also includes stellar work from GRAMMY award-winning album producer Robert Glasper, fellow GRAMMY award-winning producer & composer Qmillion and cosmic dance duo In Flagranti.
Kuti & Egypt 80 will also be performing several dates across the US this summer, including festival stops at Electric Forest and Milwaukee's Summerfest. The band have shared a brand new live video, filmed at last year's Primavera festival, where one can get a good look at the incredible, unsurpassed live show from the Lagos-based scion and the extraordinary Egypt 80 band he inherited when his father, Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, died in 1997. The New York Times said of the band's fierce live performance, "The music changed constantly as the propulsion surged; the power of the rhythms redoubled the urgency of the messages...Mr. Kuti's Afrobeat makes its politics physical, its anger into momentum." NPR was more direct, stating "These tracks are for dancing - if you're not moving, something may well be wrong."
The newest record from the reigning prince of Afrobeat, A Long Way to the Beginning, was co-produced by Grammy winner Robert Glasper and features appearances from M-1 of dead prez,Blitz the Ambassador and Nneka. With a clenched fist and a blast of his alto-sax, "IMF" finds Seun Kuti launching into his tightest, most electrifying album yet. This time around no one escapes the Afrobeat warrior's ire: not corrupt Nigerian leaders or sly western powers. Not bankers, corporate greedheads or any lying, cheating international motherfucker anywhere. NPR's Morning Editionpoints out, "The music combines complex frenetic rhythms and call-and-response vocals with sharp social commentary." The Guardian said Long Way finds Seun handling "his father's esteemed Afrobeat legacy with aplomb...the playing is faster and harder, with some wonderfully intricate horn parts...and there are torrents of exhortations to young Africa." Time Out lauds the album's "impeccable polyrhythms" and the Boston Globe says it "channels pure political Fela, urgent and acerbic."
