High praise for Chinese Fountain:
“After a few years of seemingly constant recording and touring, they’ve refined their sound into a poppy, retro-leaning style that they call “beach goth,” a combination of chiming, reverb-drenched guitars, snappy drums, and frontman Brooks Nielsen’s languid vocals, which suggest a guy who never takes his shades off, even indoors.” Entertainment Weekly

“...the Growlers are a genuine counterculture band singing to a new disaffected generation out there in the sprawl.” The Talkhouse

"The California dudes have whittled down and perfected their blissed-out brand of self-described "beach goth" over the past several years, and now their lazy day sound is in full force with Chinese Fountain.” NYLON

"The Growlers take a cue from '60s psychedelia and expand to everything from surf to country to effects-heavy, theatrical rock. With a new album, Chinese Fountain, out September 23, their sound tightens up, bringing with it a disco vibe, all punctuated by the telltale twang of singer Brooks Nielsen.” ESQUIRE

“It’s heavy on the heart, but light on the ears, and will leave you pining for the past. Forget time machines, just play Chinese Fountain instead.” Monster Children

"Their music is flawlessly rough around the edges, incredibly melodic yet filled with hooks and spirit.” Middle Boop

"The Growlers – powered by principal songwriters, songwriters Brooks Nielsen and guitarist Matt Taylor – have made their best album yet.” WXPN

"On "Big Toe," the band picks up where their nine-song Gilded Pleasures EP left off in November, delivering another trademark nugget of salt-water psychedelia, entrancing listeners with a compelling groove as singer Brooks Nielsen croons atop with slacker swagger.” SPIN

“...just perfect for these days where you start realizing that the recently ditched bitching about cold weather is about to switch over to humidity rants.” CMJ

"The Growlers’ forthcoming fifth album, the taut and tangy Chinese Fountain, the California band tackles the future by looking to the past.” Flavorwire

“...loaded with post-punk charm.” Under The Radar

"The beach drifting sound of The Growlers only continues to get bigger, the chops are tighter, and production is cleaner.” IMPOSE

"It's still got the SoCal, so-gonna-take-my-time-with-this approach to psychedelia. But where the edge of their previous material started and stopped in the fuzz of the guitars, "Big Toe" extends a mean tongue to the lyrical content.” Indie Shuffle

"If you do happen to catch what they’re crooning, the straight-from-the-gutter lyrics put the listener into both a strangely pleasant and unsettled equilibrium—a place usually reserved for tunes by The Magnetic Fields and Belle & Sebastian.” Anthemic

"This Costa Mesa, Calif. band skirts through vintage reverb-heavy surf riffs, edgy rockabilly, swirly psychedelia, spaghetti western hypnosis, and buoyant Eastern European folks, all topped with a hook-inducing sprinkle of bubblegum pop.” Relix

“…reckless energy and live-in-the- moment ecstasy that fuels The Growlers’ reverb-soaked and surfy sound, topped by Nielsen’s whiskey-ripped vocals.” NYLON Guys

"It’s a true garage rock masterpiece, as unadorned and raw as it should be.” Pancakes & Whiskey

“...a distinct sound that is unmistakably their’s through and through, be it beach goth or any heap of genres. Let them be the Growlers. It’s a great sound indeed.” GLIDE Magazine
