The debut album from 18-year-old singer/songwriter mxmtoon, the masquerade delivers what she calls “rhyming diary entries”: an off-the-cuff account of her most private thoughts and feelings, usually dashed off very late at night, straight from her brightly lit brain. In her deliberate refusal to hide behind metaphor, the Oakland-based artist otherwise known asMaia achieves a quiet bravery, an unrestrained honesty that gives voice to those who often go unheard.
“When I first started making music it felt like an escape from my day-to-day life, where I’d have to put on a mask to hide what I was really feeling,” says Maia in reflecting on the title to the masquerade. “Writing songs was a way to express all the things I couldn’t talk about in face-to-face interactions, and share them with a community of people who maybe also needed to put up a façade to get through the day.”
Maia has built a remarkable bond with her audience entirely on the strength of her resonant songwriting and unaffected presence. Her debut EP plum blossom which was released in 2018 clocked more than 100 million spotify streams alone, not bad for songs recorded alone in her parents’ guest room. In less than a year she is now amassingmillions of followers and subscribers across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram aloneand Maia has made a point of using her ever-growing platform to speak out on issues close to her heart. “As a young bisexual woman of color from a family of immigrants, a lot of current events directly affect who I am,” says Maia, who’s mixed Chinese-American. “I firmly believe it’s my obligation and opportunity to speak on issues that affect us all.”

Today she released a new song for fans titled “high & dry” another excellent track showing depth and vulnerability all at once. It’s the second single from the masqueradeand comes off the heels of the instant classic “prom dress” where we see her as a songwriter skillfully offer a layered meditation on expectation and disappointment, blithely showcasing her self-effacing sense of humor. “I wrote that after I ate a Double-Double from In-N-Out and then couldn’t fit in my prom dress and started having a panic attack,” Maia explains. “I think it’s so funny and stupid how when you cry you’re supposed to shut yourself off from the world, so I posted a tweet that said ‘crying in my prom dress,’ and then I made it into a song.”

mxmtoon will be hitting the road this fall with most dates already sold out or close to, another remarkable achievement for someone yet to release their debut album. All dates are listed below.

About Useless Coordinates:
“Go inwards and be bold.”
This was Harmony Korine’s advice to aspiring creatives, during a Q&A at the British Film Institute back in early 2016. For the recently-formed Drahla, his words served as something of a directive, encouraging the trio to trust their own instincts, however far removed they might be from those of their peers. Three years on, the Leeds-formed band have defined their own vital subset of art-rock withUseless Coordinates, a debut album that’s as fearless as it is enthralling.
Speaking from her current base in south-east London with bassist Rob Riggs, singer/guitarist Luciel Brown recounts the record’s somewhat chaotic gestation. “Most of last year was spent touring, so we were squeezing writing and recording in from the beginning of 2018 until end of August.” In-between a headline tour, support slots with Ought and METZ, and multiple festival appearances - including at Meltdown at the request of The Cure’s Robert Smith - Brown, Riggs and Wakefield-based drummer Mike Ainsley managed 10 days in the studio in total.

It was the unsettled nature of the period that part-inspired the album’s title. “[Useless Coordinates] summarised all of our situations,” Brown explains. “We had all these shows coming up and we knew we needed to leave our jobs and change our living situations to make all this stuff happen. So we had all these fixed points and timelines, but at the same time we felt quite lost within all of that.”

Though they felt adrift in their personal lives, artistically Drahla thrived amongst confusion. Experimentation was integral to the creative process, with Brown and Riggs continuing to swap instruments as per their live shows, while collectively they were open to relinquishing traditional song structures in favour of adopting a more instinctive approach. Another integral development proved to be the involvement Chris Duffin of XAM Duo, who played saxophone on large swathes of the record and whose esoteric musical tastes were influential.
Via Duffin, they discovered the work of Japanese synth pioneers Mariah and saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu. These cult figures figure amongst an eclectic array of musical touch points, from Glenn Miller and Swell Maps, to L.A.-band Behavior. As per their earliest releases, No Wave and post-punk remain integral to Drahla’s musical universe, evident in Brown’s brilliantly deadpan drawl, in the Gang Of Four-esque guitars on Gilded Cloud, and in Duffin’s skronking saxophone on React/Revolt, which draws parallels with the work ofJames Chance and the Contortions.
The set’s sharp angles, stark tones and claustrophobic textures are reflected in the album’s artwork. Designed by Brown and Riggs - as per all previous record sleeves and promotional videos - the minimalist, mixed media creation takes inspiration from Talking Heads and Gang Of Four album art, the work of American artist Cy Twombly, and the economical, regimented aesthetic of the Bauhaus movement. “Drahla came about off the back of needing an outlet for creative expression,” Brown explains. “So the whole aesthetic is hugely important. As important as the music.”
Whatever the medium, Brown’s interests lie in looking beyond the immediate to the abstract and indefinable. Her lyrics are developed from observations, notes and poems, and the fragmented imagery is spliced together to disorientating effect. On Gilded Cloud elegant snapshots from the golden age of Hollywood are juxtaposed with abrasive guitar textures, Pyramid Estate draws parallels between Ancient Egypt and the present day, and Serenity evokes the violent energy of a Francis Bacon painting. Beneath the abstraction are a diverse array of themes, including gender fluidity (Invisible Sex), city living (Primitive Rhythm) and artistic expression (Unwound).
The result is an uncompromising but deeply rewarding debut where the internal and external, cerebral and visceral coalesce to quite startling effect.

The Drums Share New Track "Try", Listen Now; Summer Tour Dates Begin July 25

THE DRUMS REVEAL NEW SINGLE “TRY”, LISTEN HERE

NEW ALBUM ‘BRUTALISM’ OUT NOW

SUMMER TOUR DATES BEGIN JULY 25

“With 'Brutalism', The Drums' sound feels bigger than it's ever been.” - NPR Music

"Featuring a healthy mix of The Drums’ much-loved indie-pop spunk and bright new textures, The Drums sound as musically confident and lyrically woeful as ever." – Paste

An unnervingly reliable source of manic pop thrills … The Drums are more stupidly contagious than ever.” – Uncut

Today The Drums have released the wistful new single “Try” – listen to it HERE.

“This song was originally going to be released back in 2014, but I didn’t feel the version I had was good enough to release,” The Drums’ Jonny Pierce explained. “It was only after we re-recorded it with bending, haunting strings did the song feel good enough to let into the world. It’s a song about loving someone at peak level only to get little to nothing in return.”

This past April The Drums released their critically acclaimed fifth album Brutalism, the follow-up to 2017’s Abysmal Thoughts, which marked the band’s first release as a solo project from front man Jonny Pierce. On Brutalism, a lot is different. The album is defined by growth, transformation and questions, but it doesn't provide all the answers. It’s rooted in an emotional rawness, but its layers are soft, intricate and warm, full of exquisitely crafted pop songs that blast sunlight and high energy in the face of anxiety, solitude and crippling self-doubt.

Pierce was more open than ever, keeping his control freakery at bay while working with others to produce and record the album. He brought in Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, Amen Dunes) to mix it. If there was a guitar part he wanted to write but couldn't play, he brought in a guitarist. It's also the first Drums record with a live drummer. Delegating freed up Pierce's time to produce a more specific vision. “I used to think our songs sounded like they were held together by scotch tape,” Pierce said. “These are more bulletproof.”

This summer The Drums will continue to tour in support of Brutalism with a run of West coast dates that will hit San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and more. All upcoming dates are listed below.

Cabaret Voltaire Announce Two Archive Releases; "Chance Versus Causality" And "1974-76" Available August 30

CABARET VOLTAIRE

ANNOUNCE TWO ARCHIVE RELEASES

CHANCE VERSUS CAUSALITY
AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME

1974-76 REMASTERED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON VINYL

OUT AUGUST 30 VIA MUTE

CABARET VOLTAIRE have announced the release of their 1979 soundtrack, Chance Versus Causality, which will be available officially for the first time since the film’s release. Chance Versus Causality will be out on limited edition transparent green vinyl, CD and digital formats on August 30 via Mute. Listen to a taste of what to expect here.

On the same day, 1974-76 will get its first vinyl release. The album, originally released on cassette via Industrial Records in 1980, was reissued on CD by The Grey Area of Mute (a division of Mute dedicated to reissues) in 1992 and will be available on limited edition transparent orange double vinyl and digital formats. 1974-76 is a selection of material recorded by Cabaret Voltaire in their formative years. Recorded in Chris Watson’s attic on a domestic reel-to-reel tape recorder, a number of the recordings were included in the now legendary limited edition cassette released by the band in 1976.

Pre-order Chance Versus Causality 1974-76 here.

Chance Versus Causality was recorded in 1979 as the soundtrack for director Babeth Mondini’s film of the same name. The band originally met Mondini at the infamous Brussels Plan K show which saw Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire and William Burroughs share a bill, and soon after, Mondini asked them to create the soundtrack for her film. Chance Versus Causality was improvised in a similar vein to what the band refer to as their live “ambient sets” which are described as having “less rhythm, more tape.” The soundtrack was recorded live by the original Cabaret Voltaire line up – Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson – at the band’s Western Works studio with no prior knowledge of the film or instruction from the director.

Only one copy of the soundtrack existed on two reels of tape that were sent to Holland for inclusion in the split-screen 16mm film which was given a limited release and never even seen by the band. Previously, only a section of the soundtrack was released via the B-side to the “Silent Command” 7” (RoughTrade004). Around 15 years ago, the tapes were returned to Cabaret Voltaire and this lost classic from the archive was placed to one side, only recently resurfacing during discussions with Mute. The artwork, which was created with archival and found montage imagery from that period, includes images projected at performances from that time. Chance Versus Causality was mixed digitally by Richard H. Kirk and Phil Wolstenholme.

Live and improvised but coherent with a touch of mischief and warmth, this single piece of music is an evocative snapshot of this era of Cabaret Voltaire just after the release of Nag, Nag, Nag and ahead of the Voice of America album, which has strong ties with this release through the vocal samples and overall sound.

Cabaret Voltaire have been performing select festivals in recent years, and Richard H. Kirk is currently working on a new Cabaret Voltaire album.
