Those in attendance at Deerhoof's sold-out show at The Met in Pawtucket, Rhode Island Saturday night were treated to a beautiful story, which played itself out onstage. Two of the four bands on the bill, Deerhoof and Lightning Bolt, this year celebrate 20 years of staying real and doing things on their own terms. And two younger bands, Priests and White Reaper, demonstrated how dramatically the pendulum of young taste is swinging back towards the ferocious, low-budget, violently non-mainstream and yet unpretentious aesthetic that Deerhoof and Lightning Bolt have always promulgated.
 
On the heels of last week’s so-insane-you-can’t-look-away video for “Exit Only” starring Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon, Deerhoof has revealed the “Paradise Girls” video. A ruthlessly funky hip-shaker, blending no-frills minimalism with outrageous Janet Jackson-inspired synchronized dance routines, the video is at once charming and off-putting with abstract costumes and over the top joyful expressionism. Director Kenichi Iwasa explains, "My first impression of the song was very rhythmic, playful and very happy. I wanted to translate that into a video while incorporating some unexpected twists. I wanted it to be weird and funny, but also sexy. As I imagine 'Paradise Girls' to be." Satomi Matsuzaki, who stars in the video, told Rookie Magazine, "In the song, I'm cheering for girls and calling for them to come out in front, so these hatched like butterflies."

It'd be hard to find a band more driven than Deerhoof has proven themselves to be. But whatever pot is at the end of their rainbow, it isn't filled with gold. "It's OK to be broke. You can still make music if you're broke," says Ed Rodriguez of their never having tried to escape the underground they're happy to call home. With a couple weeks now since La Isla Bonita was released via Polyvinyl, Deerhoof spells out what their record is really about on stage every night on their current tour. And it is starting to sink in with fans and press.

THE POP GROUP ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES

The Bristol, UK post-punk band that Melody Maker dubbed "one of the most important British bands of the 1970s" is heading to North America for the very first time. Formed in 1977, dead by 1981, and reformed in 2010, The Pop Group has weathered every trend that punk rock's ever seen and come out the other side weirder and wilder than ever. The current lineup includes original members Mark Stewart on vocals, Gareth Sager on guitar, piano, and sax, and drummer Bruce Smith, with former member Dan Castis on bass. The band hasn't recorded any new material (yet), but has already released a rarities set and re-released their 1980 classic album We Are Time via the new Freaks R Us label (an imprint of Kartel/Amped). More reissues are planned, and it's not much of a stretch to think that new tunes might surface sooner rather than later.

Alex Cameron is set to release his debut solo album Jumping The Shark this Saturday as a special Record Store Day release via Siberia Records. Only 250 vinyl copies will be available worldwide, being sold in Rough Trade in Brooklyn and London, Big Love in Tokyo and Siberian Desert Store in Sydney.

The LP is a collection of short tales that document the bankrupt and morally vacant world of contemporary showbiz. Voiced by a forgotten variety show host, Ken DuPont, Jumping the Shark explores issues such as guilt and humiliation in a world where everyone is to blame for an entire industry's failure – everyone except themselves.

Since Gary Numan exploded into the post-punk and new wave landscape with chart-topping singles Are ‘Friends’ Electric? and Cars, much has been made of his obvious links to science fiction. 

In the run-up to his homecoming show at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on the 28th of November, Gary made a special trip to the BFI Southbank to discuss the sci-fi films and television shows which influenced him and how they shaped his lyrics, aesthetics, stage shows and thinking. From his childhood fascination with the technology of Gerry Anderson’s Supercar and Fireball XL5 right up to his longstanding emotional relationship with Blade Runner, Gary talks us through his lifelong obsession. 

Giving a rare insight into how film culture has helped shape the face of modern music, Gary gives a passionate advocacy of the sci-fi genre and the ways in which it can benefit society.

Public Enemy To Release Two Classic Albums As Multi-Disc

PUBLIC ENEMY'S 1988 CLASSIC IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK AND 1990'S FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET TO BE RELEASED AS MULTI-DISC DELUXE EDITIONS FOR DEF JAM/UME

New packages include original albums and rare bonus tracks, with booklets featuring essays by The Roots' Questlove and Wax Poetics' Andre Torres  

Los Angeles, California - When Public Enemy's second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, was released in 1988, "it completely upended the way records are made. It challenged the concept of reinvention in recorded music," writes The Roots' Amir "Questlove" Thompson in the booklet that is included in the deluxe two-CD/DVD reissue of the album on Def Jam/Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), which will be released on November 25, 2014, along with its well-regarded follow-up, Fear of a Black Planet, which came out just two years later. In his liner notes, Wax Poetics magazine editor-in-chief Andre Torres calls that album, "the brilliant bookend to a classic hip-hop trilogy... Though Millions is the more critically acclaimed and well-known, an argument could be made for Fear's triumph as the strongest album of the three."

The Deluxe Edition of It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back includes the original album, executive produced by Rick Rubin and Bill Stephney, and produced by Hank Shocklee, Keith Shocklee, Eric "Vietnam" Sadler and Carl Ryder (aka Chuck D), better known as the Bomb Squad. It features the classic tracks "Bring the Noise," "Don't Believe the Hype," "Louder Than a Bomb" and "Rebel Without a Pause." The second disc includes 13 rare bonus mixes, among them the original "No Noise" version of "Bring the Noise," instrumental versions of "Rebel Without a Pause," "Night of the Living Baseheads" and "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos," as well as the soundtrack version of "Fight the Power" from Spike Lee's groundbreaking Do the Right Thing movie. The third disc is a DVD of the 1989 VHS release Fight the Power... Live, directed by Hart Perry and long unavailable for sale. Of most interest to you will be the the run of Cailfornian dates with begin Saturday 22nd November,with both of the New Order albums and singles at The Fonda Theatre, Los Angeles,  then at The Glasshouse, Pomona, Monday 24th November and then at The House Of Blues, San Diego on Wednesday 26th November.

Tuesday 25th November sees the band perform their only full Joy Division set of the tour, playing “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer”  at The Roxy, Los Angeles, a concert which has been long sold out.

Their most extensive North American tour yet, this is The Light’s fourth of North America following two very well received Joy Division album tours of “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer” and their equally praised tour of New Order’s “Movement” and “Power, Corruption & Lies” in September 2013.

Dates start 4th November in Austin, Texas before taking in Philadelphia, New York, Boston,Montreal, Toronto, Ferndale, Chicago, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland. San Francisco, four dates in California – two in Los Angeles and one in Pomona and San Diego before finishing in Honolulu on the 28th November.
