Pere Ubu to tour US West Coast!

Tour kicks off in Portland, OR - December 12

"If Pere Ubu's '414 Seconds' were only an instrumental, it would be plenty terrifying: During these slinking seven minutes, drum hits trigger guitar cries that sound like death moans in the distance, while reeds of electronic noise slither like snakes through the din. But it's not instrumental, and both the curdled voice and the oneirological torment of frontman David Thomas only exacerbate the music's hall of horrors."

Pere Ubu returned with their first new studio album in over three years with the January release of Lady From Shanghai on Fire Records (home to Guided by Voices, Mission of Burma, Giant Sand, Bailterspace, Josephine Foster and many others). The album ushers in a new era in the history of Pere Ubu, with David Thomas and band continuing to provoke and shock listeners, further establishing them as one of the most innovative, progressive and important bands of all time.

The Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled in August 1975 to be the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in London, Paris, Manchester, New York and Minneapolis. Pere Ubu was changing the face of rock music. Over the next 34 years they defined the art of cult; refined the voice of the outsider; and inspired the likes of Joy Division, Pixies, Husker Du, Henry Rollins, REM, Sisters of Mercy, Thomas Dolby, Bauhaus, Julian Cope and countless others.

Pere Ubu make a music that is a disorienting mix of midwestern groove rock, “found” sound, analog synthesizers, falling-apart song structures and careening vocals. It is a mix that has mesmerized critics, musicians and fans for decades.

Press for Lady From Shanghai:
"Pere Ubu made some of the darkest and most creative music of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Thirty five years after its release, The Modern Dance would easily make my top 10 of all time. We hear the word "industrial" bandied about to describe music — The Modern Dance exemplified that genre.  Wordsmith and singer David Thomas and his ever-changing band members have made more than a dozen albums worth hearing since then. And now they're back with a new song, "Free White," from a new album, Lady From Shanghai, due in January. It's good to know that singular, defining sound still haunts this band." Bob Boilen - NPR

“Ubu are generally regarded as the missing link between the Velvets and punk. From the beginning they obviously understood the nuts and bolts of popular music, and then loosened them.” Joe Cushley – Mojo

“They’re the greatest out-rock ‘n’ roll group of this millennium, and probably the next.”Edwin Pouncey – The Wire

Production Notes:
Produced by David Thomas.
Engineered by Paul Hamann.
Recorded at Suma (Painesville OH) and also at Nuke India Now (Hove) and Urban Iguana (NYC) studios.

NONONO @ The Echo 10/24

NONONO, the Swedish indie-pop trio behind the addicting goodness of "Pumpin Blood," will be playing a very special show this coming week at The Echo on Thursday, October 24th. Space is tight, but let me know if you're interested in checking them out live, or can help cover the show and I'll do my best to get you sorted.

This string of dates is the first time NONONO, aka lead singer Stina Wappling, and the production duo Astma & Rocwell, have ever played the US. They're in the midst of becoming the breakout act of CMJ. NONONO's first ever US gig was Monday night, to a packed house at Le Baron as part of Aboslut's Encore Sessions series. They sold out Mercury Lounge last night, and everyone from Vogue to The Fader to Daily Candy to Teen Vogue to Nylon to Under The Radar fired up about the future.

Crystal Antlers are proud to share the new video for "Licorice Pizza" via The Fader, the second single off the band's latest offering, Nothing is Real, out today, October 15 on Innovative Leisure.

Along with praise from The Fader for its "catchy simplicity," the record has already been spotlighted by Stereogum, Noisey and The New York Times, who recently premiered the album stream. LA Weekly raves, "Nothing Is Real is their most accessible record to date, and also their best. Just over 40 minutes of loud and frenetic songs tempered by softer, more melodic patches with splashes of pop, the work poignantly captures the restlessness of late twenty-something life, a kicking and screaming arrival at maturity."

Dais announces archival LP for COUM Transmissions

DAIS RECORDS ANNOUNCES
COUM TRANSMISSIONS
(PRE - THROBBING GRISTLE)
HOME AGED & THE 18 MONTH HOPE
An LP of archival and unheard recordings.
                                                                                                                                                                                Genesis P-Orridge

Dais Records has just announced the most recent installment of the rare & unheard archival recordings from the transgressive 70′s performance art group COUM Transmissions.  Founded in late 1969 by Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle), COUM Transmissions’s provocative performances mixed with visual art solidified the group as one of the most forward thinking breakthroughs within the 70′s conceptual art scene.  Only in the past couple years has COUM’s recorded works seen the light of day.  This release collects various selections spanning the years 1971 through 1975, including a rare live performance opening for Hawkwind, lost radio interview, obtuse poetry readings by early member Fizzey Peat, piano & violin compositions by Genesis P-Orridge and insightful field recordings. The LP is limited to only 1,000 vinyl copies, pre-orders have just went up so don't miss out on the chance to own this special release.

In 1971, COUM Transmissions opened for Hawkwind under the alias "Edna and The Great Surfers", causing commotion that was typical for their public actions in England during the early 1970's. You can hear a piece from that performance below.

About COUM Transmissions:
COUM Transmissions were a performance art collective who operated in the United Kingdom from 1969 through to 1976. Influenced by the Dada and Fluxus art movements, COUM were openly confrontational and subversive, challenging aspects of conventional British society through mail art and public performances. Founded in Hull, Yorkshire in 1969 by Genesis P-Orridge, and later John Shapiro, after a brief stint with the Exploding Galaxy commune.  P-Orridge and Shapiro started the Ho-Ho Funhouse which rallied other members into the COUM Transmissions collective fold.  COUM Transmissions would later include signature members who would together found the pioneering industrial band Throbbing Gristle in 1976.

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF TO BEGIN FIRST U.S. TOUR

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF TO BEGIN FIRST U.S. TOUR DECEMBER 4 IN D.C.
Performances Will Feature Material from Swedish Artist’s Highly Acclaimed Album Ceremony

“I hope to find one album like Ceremony every year…and now I've got one for 2013.”
—Bob Boilen, NPR Music

“When von Hausswolff's ringing, regal voice sails in, it's clear that an original voice is announcing itself.”
—Jayson Greene, Pitchfork

Finally, audiences in major U.S. cities will have an opportunity to experience singer / pianist Anna von Hausswolff’s striking and deeply felt music live. She will tour the country for the first time, beginning December 4 in Washington, DC, performing material from her celebrated album Ceremony (July 9, Other Music Recording Co.). Please see below for an itinerary of shows.

Anna von Hausswolff hails from Sweden, the land of midnight sun, black metal and Ingmar Bergman. Ceremony is primarily inspired by the death of her grandfather three years ago, and is informed by Anna’s childhood, when she and her sister sang in choirs and spent much time around their father, the renowned avant-garde artist and composer Carl Michael von Hausswolff, as he worked with artists ranging from William S. Burroughs to Union Carbide Productions. To record this tribute to her grandfather, Anna, a unique and powerful singer, accompanies herself on that most sacred of instruments, the church organ. The result is a work that combines intimacy and majestic grandeur.

Among the music press that has hailed Ceremony, von Hausswolff’s first U.S. release, is NPR Music’s Bob Boilen, who wrote, “When you put on Anna von Hausswolf's second album, Ceremony, everything around you changes. That ability to be instantly distinct is the mark of any great record; it's a vibe, and here that vibe is dramatic and stark and, as Ceremony progresses, surprising…von Hausswolff's voice possesses the power to soar with those mighty pipes and still hold tight to delicate, personal emotions.”The Village Voice called Ceremony a “beautiful, elegiac song cycle.” Reviewing her only U.S. live show to date, in July at Brooklyn’s Glasslands, Brooklyn Vegan noted von Hausswolf's “seriously spine-tingling pipes.”

Growing up in Gothenburg’s bohemian neighborhood of Haga, Anna and her younger sister, Maria, were surrounded by art and music. They lived with their mother in a small apartment nestled amongst concert halls, record shops, galleries and cafĂ©s. Music was everywhere, and none was more impactful than that of the girls’ own father. The senior von Hausswolff’s sound experiments and art installations opened his young daughters’ minds to a world of inspiration, and the headquarters of the Haga-based Radium label he founded in 1986, the same year Anna was born, became a playground and hideout for the sisters, a smoke-filled cabinet of wonders where a vast array of iconic artists took up residence amongst the girls’ schoolbooks and playthings.

After high school, Anna began to pursue a lifelong interest in architecture at Chalmers University before moving to Copenhagen to continue her studies of art and architecture at the Royal Academy of Art, where she is currently enrolled. And yet, as her studies continued, her musical passion only deepened, and in 2009 Anna released her first EP on Kning Disk, Track of Time, followed in 2010 by her debut full-length, Singing from the Grave. The album received rave reviews across Sweden and took various awards, and Anna toured across Scandinavia numerous times. Since Kning Disk released Ceremony in Sweden last summer, the album has received near-universal critical praise and was nominated for two Swedish Grammys and a Nordic Prize.

For the U.S. dates, von Hausswolff will be joined by her Swedish band: Filip Leyman (keyboards), Karl Vento (guitar) and Ulrik Ording (drums).

The North American release by Other Music Recording Co. (distributed by Fat Possum) on July 9 followed an acclaimed U.K. / E.U. release by City Slang on June 17.
