Northern California native Chelsea Wolfe's sound is best described with broad strokes: elemental, intense, radiant, ancient yet modern, intimate yet expansive, dark and sparkling. Hues of black metal and deep blues inform her ever-evolving electric folk--a warm force that wraps itself around the listener, encouraging uplift, seeking triumph. Her voice similarly haunts and soothes, with words that illuminate life's darker corners in order to reveal the unlikely truth and beauty hidden within.

In a way, Wolfe is on a journey to the surface of her own music. 2012 finds releasing her first acoustic emanation on Sargent House, a collection of once-orphaned songs given a home. The experience is a secret shared, a side of our heroine rarely seen or heard, and the making was as intimate as it gets: recorded in the woods of Northern California and at Wolfe's L.A. home, co-produced by her bandmate Ben Chisholm, with players Ezra Buchla of Gowns (viola), Andrea Calderón of Corima (violin) and Daniel Denton of Gothic Tropic (bass).

In 2013, Wolfe will deliver her as-yet-untitled official third album, which will expand upon the acoustic record's themes: the elements and natural disasters, humanity, love, desolation. At the same time, the new full-length will mark a significant change as Wolfe and Chisholm (who makes glitched goth-soul as Revelator) bring more electronic elements into the fold. Lars Stalfors (The Mars Volta, Marnie Stern) will be on hand to produce the LP, which will also feature the other members of Wolfe's live wrecking crew, guitarist Kevin Dockter and drummer Dylan Fujioka.

Disparate as these two developments are, they perfectly embody Wolfe's growth as an artist -- the inside turning outward, her recent European outing and August U.S. tour with Russian Circles providing an apt contrast to her more cloistered childhood. Her rare romanticism began early, but it was always a private affair. At 9, she'd watch her father playing country music and sneak into his home studio to record skewed keyboard covers (The Never-Ending Story theme was a favorite) and originals.

Wolfe long lacked the confidence to share her work, but in 2009 she embarked on a three-month stint abroad with a nomadic performance troupe. After performing in cathedrals, basements and old nuclear plants to whoever would listen, she returned home with a new drive. She began toting around an 8-track and recording as the mood hit, eventually editing her findings into 2010's stunner LP, The Grime & the Glow. Described as both healing and harrowing, enchanting and narcotic, the album established Wolfe as a force on the rise.

Inspired, Wolfe then relocated to Los Angeles and recorded her second album, 2011's Apokalypsis LP, which found her in an actual studio. The songs captured therein maintained the strikingly visceral elements of her debut. Praise came for the record's revelatory dirges and cavernous sound, and moreover for Wolfe's newly showcased songwriting chops. Her onward march through music only seems to deepen the experience. Whether stripped bare or fully backed, Wolfe carries a serious heaviness of sound offset by that ever-present counterweight: transcendence of spirit.

Spending endless hours creating stories and building universes with their voices and toys, their debut album, House Of Baasa, out now, is a powerful expression that embodies the spirit of adventure in all its glory. Strings are stretched to reveal alien textures, found sounds and field recordings weave in and out, all the while traveling through a colorful landscape that pulls the listener deep into the otherworld of Zambri, a world as imaginative as the mind of a young Alice (In Wonderland). Just at the end of last year, Zambri released their debut EP, Glossolalia, receiving praise from the likes of Stereogum (Band to Watch), Spin Magazine, NME, MTV, Under The Radar, and more pointing out the unique sound the sisters seemed to have plucked from the netherworld.  MTV says Zambri “…delivers the sort of fully-formed, cohesive sound that a lifetime of collaboration might be necessary to achieve.” With House of Baasa, Jessica and Cristi Jo bare their soul even more, revealing their true adoration for pop music and catchy melodies. During the recording process, the sisters drew heavily from sounds of familiarity to create a mood that is as recognizable as it is contagious.  Together, they produced and recorded the album in its entirety, bouncing back and forth from Chinatown to The Village for the greater part of a year. Paying homage to their roots, they used old demo recordings from cassette tapes, manipulated the traditional use of their voices and built their own sounds. The majority of the finished record is made up of the very original takes they laid down, resulting with a sound that is both honest and magical. For the final touches, they enlisted a small crew of imaginative collaborators like Rick Kwan who mixed, Chris Coady who played a co-production role on select songs, and mates Seth Kasper and Will Spitz (whom also play live with Zambri), Noel Heroux (Hooray For Earth) and Jon Philpot (Bear In Heaven) who are featured throughout. The album’s title refers to the ancient Zambri – a servant in the bible who rebelled against his ruler Baasa to overtake the throne for seven days, after which he set fire to the palace and himself.  In the spirit of their namesake, Zambri's music effortlessly defies genre, a parallel to the attitudes of its creators.  A natural ear for pop melody informs their experimental yet deliberate approach, which makes their music boldly fearless and refreshingly original.  Zambri says, "We wanted to go back into that childhood zone of absolute freedom, making moves with gut instinct".  House Of Baasa sounds simultaneously free and highly intentional, alien and nostalgic.

New York, NY (June 18, 2012) - New Music Seminar (NMS) kicked off last night with a theatrical and musical red carpet and performance at the NMS Opening Night Party at Webster Hall.

The Fiery Sensations ignited the night with a blazing performance that fused light, drums, fire and snakes, followed by an exotic ritualistic show by Alek Sandar and Yozmit. Performances by singer-songwriter, Diane Birch; classical pianist Evan Shinners; singer-songwriters The Pierces; hip-hop artist Hoodie Allen; and indie alternative group, The Royal Concept were a standout addition to this year's Seminar festivities.

DJ/Designer Donna D'Cruz and DJ Andy Rourke (of The Smiths) started the night's festivities by spinning eclectic sets in the Grand Ballroom.

The first NMS Movements also began last night with the "Songwriters Hall Of Fame Presents: Songwriters-in-the-Round" conducted by hit songwriter Desmond Child and featured Eric Bazilian, Claude Kelly and Jodi Marr as well as the "Producer's Movement: Producing Music For a Connected Society" conducted by Def Jam's Joie Manda, and featuring Benny Blanco, Just Blaze, Luke Ebbin and David Kahne.

Tom Silverman, Founder and Executive Director of NMS, presented the New York City NMS Proclamation, officiated by Mayor Bloomberg, declaring June 17-June 20, 2012 as "New Music Seminar Days."

The seminar continues with the first NMS NY Music Festival that is scheduled to take place in 17 venues tonight at 8pm through Wednesday June, 20. New Music Seminar, along with their Partners, are bringing together 150 of the best and brightest artists of the next generation for four nights of performances in NYC and Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
