GAZELLE TWIN SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW TRACK, ‘FEAR KEEPS US ALIVE’

GAZELLE TWIN
SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW TRACK, FEAR KEEPS US ALIVE

NEW ALBUM, BLACK DOG, OUT 27 OCT
AN ALBUM ABOUT CONFRONTATION, CHILDHOOD FEARS AND HOW THEY MANIFEST IN ADULTHOOD

AUTUMN DATES – LONDON, NEWCASTLE, BRIGHTON

Composer, producer, singer, and visual artist Elizabeth Bernholz – aka Gazelle Twin - has shared the latest single from her new studio album, Black Dog, set for release on vinyl, CD and digitally via Invada Records on 27 October 2023.

Black Dog is an album about confronting fear – supernatural, collective, and personal, and on the powerful new single, ‘Fear Keeps Us Alive’, the fear is explicit and horribly familiar – the fear that Bernholz explains is a “daily, constant, almost mundane common fear among women.” before going on to explain, “I have often connected this lifelong feeling to the sense of a ghostly male presence that lurks in my dreams. Women are (and always have been) constantly haunted by the potential of being harmed.”

The video - directed by long-time collaborator Chris Turner (Favourite Colour: Black) and assisted by photographer Teri Varhol - harnesses the haunting, omni-present qualities of CCTV. Shot on old format DV and Hi-8 cameras to create a detached, coldly voyeuristic point of view, it shares scenes with the upcoming supernatural short film Saint Maria’s Way, directed by Chris and written by Chelsea Kania. The film explores the same themes as ‘Fear Keeps Us Alive’, using CCTV to reconstruct the final journey of a missing woman.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/P5S-Scq3vJM

Chris Turner: “I love working with Elizabeth and Teri. We share so many of the same fascinations and obsessions, and this allows an honest and creative freedom to exist between us. We’re also all lovers of ageing, imperfect formats of photography and video. The visual and thematic elements of the song, the short film, and the album all seemed to fit perfectly together.”

Elizabeth Bernholz: “Chris, Teri and I share a passion for the weird and the uncanny. The film and images we’ve made together in various forms just wouldn’t have happened without their enthusiasm, generosity and genius skill. ‘Fear Keeps Us Alive’ is another brilliant collaboration and has produced such a striking outcome that blends so many shared ideas and visions so naturally.”

Black Dog tells a story that unfurls like a film. It addresses how our childhoods shaped our adulthoods: how any sense of trauma and grief is burnished onto a person’s memories forever, however much we try and escape it. Black Dog suggests how these feelings return in particular intensity when a person becomes a parent, as they watch themselves pass things on that they wish they hadn’t, wish they wouldn’t.

She explains, “I’m in the habit of facing my fears. So I spent years intimately recalling these childhood memories and rifling through old photos. I spoke to my family, and their various experiences of the house, and for some, the black dog in that bedroom. I spoke to friends, and friends of friends and heard their untold ghost stories, and listened obsessively to podcasts and documentaries on hauntings, possessions, and poltergeists.”

In some ways, Bernholz is purging herself on this album. Unlike her masked characters for previous releases, her face is recognisable and, she explains, she is “not as removed this time” from her persona. She is imagining herself as a medium for the voices inside herself, rather than looking out to displace them with other ideas. She emerges huge and godly as she does so, her voice moving from delicate tenderness to doom-driven power.

This is an album where old stories have to be pillaged, digested, and regurgitated to write new ones, where we have to question ourselves utterly. Black Dog looks back and looks in and looks back and looks in. We enter as we listen. We turn ourselves inside-out altogether.

Ragana Reveal “Winter’s Light Pt. 2”

Ragana Reveal “Winter’s Light Pt. 2

Their debut full-length for The Flenser, Desolation's Flower, is out  October 27th

"a cathartic document of hope and grief that seems perfect for the dark, tumultuous times in which we live" - Decibel Magazine

In anticipation of the release of their crushing full-length Desolation's FlowerRagana— the black metal duo whose members alternate duties on drums, guitar, and vocals— share the album's final offering "Winter's Light Pt. 2."  Equal parts caustic and confident, the track is held together by an intense focus on raw emotion, shifting seamlessly from powerful to haunting and charting the resonances between personal and environmental heartbreak.

Desolation’s Flower is the band’s most devastating effort to date, containing seven incantations of loss, rage, pain and hope. Expertly engineered by the masterful Nicholas Wilbur at the Unknown Studio in Anacortes, Washington (Planning For Burial, drowse, Divide and Dissolve, Have a Nice Life), the album serves as the culmination of the past decade+ of the band's ethos and execution.

On Desolation’s FlowerRagana draws upon a number of influences from the flora and fauna of their Pacific Northwest origins to the darkly nostalgic folk of Mt. Eerie and, yes, their Olympian forebears Wolves In The Throne Room, synthesizing them into an experimental, highly idiosyncratic take on black metal.  The band came together in 2011 in the DIY punk scene of Olympia, WA and are now based in Olympia and Oakland, CA. In their time together so far, Ragana have self-released 5 albums and teamed up with genre-favorite Thou for a split release in 2018.  The following year, Ragana released their heralded We Know That the Heavens Are Empty EP and are now preparing for their debut LP for The Flenser, Desolation’s Flower, incoming October 27th.

Look for the record to be available on physical and digital formats October 27th from The Flenser (pre-order here) and revisit album singles "Desolation's Flower" and "DTA" below.

(October 3, 2023) - Ahead of his highly-anticipated debut album, EXCELSIOR, out this Friday on renowned label Warp Records, Slauson Malone 1 unveils his final preview of the record with new single "Half-Life." EXCELSIOR has already received early praise ahead of its release with The New York Times describing it as "deeply ambitious, engaging and full of winning eccentricities," and Pitchfork recently calling it one of the most anticipated releases coming this fall.

The single, produced alongside his Slauson Malone 1 touring partner and cellist Nicky Wetherell, is a poignant exploration of the aftermath of a heart-wrenching breakup and the intricate dynamics of falling out of love. Much like the concept of nuclear half-life, it delves into the idea that one never entirely ceases to love someone; instead, that love gradually diminishes, halving itself with the passage of time. "Half-Life" follows his previous offerings, "New Joy," a mesmerizing exploration of finding pleasure from submission and "Voyager," that spoke to the period of thoughtfulness following the release of his critically acclaimed 2019 full-length A Quiet Farwell, 2016-2018 (Crater Speak) as Slauson Malone before he moved to Los Angeles.

Following a tour run on the West Coast alongside King Krule and in close succession to the EXCELSIOR album launch, Slauson Malone 1 will kick off a solo headlining tour in the US next week. Afterward, he will travel across the pond for a European tour of headline and festival dates. Tickets are available for purchase here.

The word "excelsior" embodies perpetual ascent. Slauson Malone 1 envisions it as a metaphorical sword, one that in someone's possession incessantly grows until it cleaves the Earth in a grand finale. That metaphor becomes his lens to explore all facets of masculinity with a newfound clarity, as he interrogates his own lived experiences through songs and movements across the album. Jasper was inspired by everything from Grammy award-winning composer Wendy Carlos, to (in his words) "the fact that there are no castles in America, but we do have Castle Romeo, which is an atomic bomb." EXCELSIOR takes the form of a collection of personal essays, with vignettes that intertwine and stand-alone, but ultimately serve the purpose of forming Slauson Malone 1's most personal and enthralling musical work to date.

Check out "Half-Life" above, see the full routing for Slauson Malone 1's US and European tour dates and more info on EXCELSIOR below.

Globally lauded Mongolian rock sensation and UNESCO 2023 “Artist of Peace” designees THE HU have shared their first-ever animated music video for the deeply moving, environmentally conscious song “Sell The World.” It is featured on their sophomore 2022 album RUMBLE OF THUNDER and its deluxe version, released earlier this year via Better Noise Music. The compelling animated video depicts environmental villains taking nature’s limited resources for granted and ruining the planet for generations to come. Watch it streaming below or via YouTube HERE

“The ‘Sell the World’ music video is the first-ever animated music video from The HU,” shares THE HU’s producer DASHKA. “It’s our way of expressing the love we have for our earth. From the name of the song to the content of the video, we use sarcasm and exaggeration to show the unpleasantness of the world. It was easier to use the graphics and 3Ds to create visuals for the exaggerated message that the song has in its lyrics. Throughout past albums, The HU’s songs positively reinforce the message of protecting the earth and keeping nature intact. However, on this video we took a completely different, polar opposite approach to the song’s message by reminding listeners of the limited resources of this earth. The female in the video represents the mother earth we are singing about.”

RUMBLE OF THUNDER: DELUXE VERSION is available now via digital download or on cd, cassette and various special edition vinyl offerings at: https://thehu.ffm.to/rumblethunderdeluxe. The extended album includes seven new tracks including four acoustic songs and three newly recorded singles featuring guest musicians including William Duvall (Alice In Chains)Serj TankianDL (Bad Wolves) and LP.

In coordination with the “Sell The World” video debut, THE HU have today (October 3) announced the support acts—Finnish nu-metal group Blind Channel and California-based rockers NERV—for their upcoming headlining U.S. “Warrior Souls” West Coast tour. The “Warrior Souls” tour kicks off on October 9 in San Francisco, CA and wraps October 26 in Phoenix, AZ. Currently, THE HU are on the last leg of their co-headlining “Psycho Thunder” U.S. tour with Asking Alexandria and will appear this weekend at Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, CA. Upcoming dates can be found listed below. For tickets and limited VIP upgrades, please visit: https://www.thehuofficial.com/tour-1.

The band’s name translates to the Mongolian root word for “human being,” and their unique approach blends traditional Mongolian instruments land throat singing with contemporary sounds, creating a unique sonic profile that they call “Hunnu Rock.” They received the highest state award in Mongolia, the Order of Genghis Khan from the President of Mongolia, Kh. Battulga in 2020, for their achievements.
