(October 3, 2023) - Ahead of his highly-anticipated debut album, EXCELSIOR, out this Friday on renowned label Warp Records, Slauson Malone 1 unveils his final preview of the record with new single "Half-Life." EXCELSIOR has already received early praise ahead of its release with The New York Times describing it as "deeply ambitious, engaging and full of winning eccentricities," and Pitchfork recently calling it one of the most anticipated releases coming this fall.
The single, produced alongside his Slauson Malone 1 touring partner and cellist Nicky Wetherell, is a poignant exploration of the aftermath of a heart-wrenching breakup and the intricate dynamics of falling out of love. Much like the concept of nuclear half-life, it delves into the idea that one never entirely ceases to love someone; instead, that love gradually diminishes, halving itself with the passage of time. "Half-Life" follows his previous offerings, "New Joy," a mesmerizing exploration of finding pleasure from submission and "Voyager," that spoke to the period of thoughtfulness following the release of his critically acclaimed 2019 full-length A Quiet Farwell, 2016-2018 (Crater Speak) as Slauson Malone before he moved to Los Angeles.
Following a tour run on the West Coast alongside King Krule and in close succession to the EXCELSIOR album launch, Slauson Malone 1 will kick off a solo headlining tour in the US next week. Afterward, he will travel across the pond for a European tour of headline and festival dates. Tickets are available for purchase here.
The word "excelsior" embodies perpetual ascent. Slauson Malone 1 envisions it as a metaphorical sword, one that in someone's possession incessantly grows until it cleaves the Earth in a grand finale. That metaphor becomes his lens to explore all facets of masculinity with a newfound clarity, as he interrogates his own lived experiences through songs and movements across the album. Jasper was inspired by everything from Grammy award-winning composer Wendy Carlos, to (in his words) "the fact that there are no castles in America, but we do have Castle Romeo, which is an atomic bomb." EXCELSIOR takes the form of a collection of personal essays, with vignettes that intertwine and stand-alone, but ultimately serve the purpose of forming Slauson Malone 1's most personal and enthralling musical work to date.
