Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack aren’t just musical collaborators – they’re also life partners. As Pearl & the Oysters, they make songs that speak to eclectic tastes in music and pop culture; as Juju and Jojo, they’re kindred spirits. In another life, Juliette and Joachim made pop music in Paris but they sometimes felt at odds with the local music scene of the time. So when the opportunity arose, the pair skipped town for the U.S.

In Gainesville, Florida, they were welcomed into an open-minded DIY scene, but after a few “very inspiring years”, they were confronted with insomnia and anxiety, and needed a fresh start. So they crossed the country to L.A. and connected with artists including Lætitia Sadier (Stereolab), Riley Geare (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Dent May, and Alex Brettin (Mild High Club) who contributed to their first record for Stones Throw, Coast 2 Coast.

Pearl & The Oysters' new album is a colorful cocktail of aesthetics and images drawn from all over: Barbarella followed by an Agnès Varda triple bill; the swamps of Florida and sandy L.A. beaches under a mirrorball sun; a radio picking up a faraway broadcast before tuning into an oldies pop station, and crashing waves that melt into the sound of Juliette’s white noise machine. The creeping anxiety they feel at the state of the world also finds its way into Coast 2 Coast and their new song “Paraiso”, which reimagines idyllic 20th-century Californian tourism ads and dreams of a time “when the idea of the ‘endless summer’ was more of a luxury commodity than a looming menace”.

Though Coast 2 Coast documents both Juliette and Joachim’s literal move from Florida to L.A. and their state of flux, now they feel more settled. They’ve found a “sense of ‘home’ in one another.”

Pearl & The Oysters head out on the road in April; see below for a list of dates.

William S. Burroughs - Break Through in Grey Room

Inspired by the original Industrial Records release of William S. Burroughs’s Nothing Here Now but the Recordings, Belgian record label Sub Rosa worked with Burroughs to release another album: Break Through In Grey Room. Originally compiled in 1986 by producer Bill Rich, the album features Burroughs's experimental recordings from 1961 to 1976, featuring field recordings by Burroughs of the Master Musicians of Jajouka, experimental collaborations with mathematician Ian Sommerville and painter/cut-up originator Brion Gysin.

Break Through In Grey Room documents William S. Burroughs during his time in Europe and England, working with Ian Sommerville on recording with the 'cut-up' technique. Sommerville's technical background enabled him to contribute to the early development of sound-and-light shows in London, leading to work with gear provided by Paul McCartney in an apartment owned by Ringo Starr. Experimental in nature, the record is as much an exhibition of studio and composition technique as it is a document of underground culture at that time.

For the 2023 reissue, Dais Records has collaborated with the Estate of William S. Burroughs on reissuing the album on vinyl and compact disc, fully remastered by mastering engineer Josh Bonati.

William S. Burroughs - Nothing Here Now but the Recordings

In 1980, Genesis P-Orridge and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson of (then-)Throbbing Gristle travelled to New York City to meet up at the fortified apartment, known as The Bunker, of famed beat writer and cultural pioneer William S. Burroughs and his executor James Grauerholz. Genesis and Sleazy started the daunting task of compiling the experimental sound works of Burroughs, which, up until that point, had never been widely heard.

During those visits, Burroughs would play back his tape recorder experiments featuring his spoken word “cut-ups”, collaged field recordings from his travels and his flirtations with EVP recording techniques, pioneered by Latvian intellectual Konstantins Raudive. Over the following year, P-Orridge, Christopherson and Grauerholz spent countless hours compiling various edits, each collection showcasing Burroughs sensitive ear and experimental prowess for audio anomaly within technical limitations. In early 1981, Burroughs had relocated to Lawrence, KS to escape the violence and manias of New York City life. There, P-Orridge and Christopherson put the finishing touches on the record that would be known as Nothing Here Now but the Recordings.

Released in Spring 1981, the album would end up as the final release on Industrial Records, brought about by the dissolution of Throbbing Gristle. It was quietly out of print until 1998, when John Giorno and the Giorno Poetry Systems included the album on a retrospective CD box set, which compiled the majority of Burroughs's seminal recordings. In 2015, Dais Records worked closely with the Estate of William S. Burroughs to finally re-release, for the first time in 36 years, a proper vinyl reissue of William S. Burroughs Nothing Here Now but the Recordings to celebrate the centennial anniversary of William S. Burroughs. For the 2023 edition, Dais has remastered the audio with renowned engineer Josh Bonati, and restored the original artwork with a new dedication to Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson.

NYC no-wave veterans Live Skull annnounce new album - Hear first single

LIVE SKULL

NEW ALBUM 'PARTY ZERO' OUT ON 26 MAY VIA BRONSON RECORDINGS

HEAR FIRST SINGLE 'MAGIC CONSCIOUSNESS' HERE

“Getting in a room and being really noisy is just a natural response to what's going on right now because otherwise, you’ll just go crazy. That gave Live Skull a reason to exist again” Mark C

NYC no-wave veterans Live Skull return with new album 'Party Zero', released on 26th May 2023 via Bronson Recordings.

Today, they share album opener 'Magic Consciousness'. This is protest music of uncanny subtlety and power, bidding us to “Disengage the false narrative” over a modern post-punk tune. The band explains: "The magic of consciousness is a stellar gift; the fact that we waste so much of it on lies and misinformation incites Live Skull to make some noise!"

LISTEN TO 'MAGIC CONSCIOUSNESS' HERE

Insurrections. Global pandemics. The return of fascism. Climate crises. These are some serious times. But if you’ve got angst in your pants and you need to dance, or scream, or play guitar too loud too close to your amplifier, turn your ear to what Live Skull are doing. The New York noisers, who went on indefinite hiatus just before their kind of smart, gnarly, inventive din became lucrative, rose again in 2016. Their new album 'Party Zero', a thrilling work redefining what Live Skull means and what they stand for: no longer a group with a past, but one with a future.

'Party Zero' marks the arrival of guitarist Dave Hollinghurst, an electrifying presence pushing the band in a fresh, new direction. It’s a fiercely political album, in keeping with this politically fierce age. “Desperation inspires us to make art and music,” he says. “There’s a lot of birth and rebirth, looking for pathways of resistance and promoting the good and trying to fight against evil. I once said we had to start Live Skull because Reagan became president. And we had to restart Live Skull because Trump became president.”

'Party Zero' is big in sound, brash in dynamics. But the sophistication that was always the group’s calling card remains an essential element, dealing in the kind of pulverising pell-mell that characterised the 80s New York sound, but also radiant with melody, the fusion of noise and unexpected tunefulness delivering a heady, psychedelic effect.

This is timely music, essential, impassioned, angry and beautiful. It’s the sound of Live Skull in the 21st Century, a desperate time that needs heroes like these. “We’ve been pushed to the edge – how do we claw our way back?” asks Mark. “That’s been a common theme in Live Skull since the beginning, and so it is now. We’re trying to provoke thought.”

(1st March) –– Danish, London based musician, producer and vocalist Marie Dahlstrom has announced her second album 'A Good Life' will be released on 22nd May via her own JFH Records imprint, and released its title track "A Good Life". The new album will feature collaborations with acts including Kofi Stone, Jay Prince, Conor Albert, Delleile Ankrah and Sipprell.

Consistently proving she is one of the most essential voices in contemporary R&B, the release of 'A Good Life' on 22nd May will mark 3 years to the day since her widely acclaimed debut album Like Sand was released. To celebrate the announcement today, Dahlstrom has shared the album's second taster and title track "A Good Life".

Produced by south London producer and Young Poet/Ninja Tune signee Conor Albert, new single "A Good Life" exudes blissful positivity. Accompanied by warbling keys, soulful guitar passages and uplifting brass sections, "A Good Life" was written as an ode to Marie's son and explores the wonders of the world from a child's eyes.

Speaking more on its inspiration and lyrical meaning, Marie Dahlstrom said:

"A Good Life is a song about the wonders of everyday life, if we choose to stay curious. These moments will eventually be what we remember, and become a part of our story. This song is for my son, and everything he’s already taught me."

Adding more on what to expect from her upcoming second album, Dahlstrom continued:

"I hope that every album I make will convey a sense of honesty to it. This one is based on reflections from a few years of my life with many changes and adjustments. It’s an album about human interaction in all its complexity."

Marie Dahlstrom is supported and praised widely at press by the likes of Billboard, NPR, Complex, The Line Of Best Fit, Mixtape Madness, NYLON, New Wave Magazine,  Wonderland Magazine and more, as well as being listed as a 'Sleeper Pick' by Joe Budden (twice) on The Joe Budden Podcast (the most influential podcast in R&B and hip-hop globally). Marie Dahlstrom has also received substantial radio airplay from BBC 1Xtra DJ’s Jamz Supernova, DJ Target, Toddla T and Rinse FM’s Jyoty.

Marie Dahlstrom's new album 'A Good Life' is out 22nd May via JFH Records. New single "A Good Life" is out now, and Marie headlines London's Lafayette on 6th April (tickets).

HEADLINE U.S. TOUR KICKS OFF APRIL 27TH

Alfa Mist returns today with the soul-inflected new song “Aged Eyes,” the latest single from Variables, his new album out April 21st via ANTI-. The track features bass and vocals from his longtime collaborator, Kaya Thomas-Dyke, and follows the release of recent singles “4th Feb (Stay Awake)” and “BC.” Throughout “Aged Eyes,” Alfa Mist leads the way on keys while Thomas-Dyke blends her gossamer vocal over a finger-picking guitar melody to swell into a strings-laden, cinematic chorus. The moving song about a yearning hope, draped in memorably emotive piano melodies and intuitive grooves also features Jamie Leeming (guitar), Avishai Rozen (drums), Peggy Nolan (cello), and Junior Alli-Balogun (percussion).

LISTEN & SHARE “AGED EYES”

The London-based multi-hyphenate is also set to return to the road for dates in the UK, EU and United States this spring, and follows his sold out 2022 tour. He’s also announced a slew of new shows through this fall. See dates below. Alfa’s live presence is packed with urgent energy and speaks of his restless creativity – a driving force that has enabled his remarkable work-ethic to date.

Alfa is yet to be boxed into a specific genre as his music spans everything from hip-hop beat-making to producing for artists such as rapper Loyle Carner, composing neoclassical works for the London Contemporary Orchestra, and reworking tracks from composer Ólafur Arnalds and pioneering jazz label Blue Note. Since the release of his first full-length project Nocturne in 2015, Alfa has established himself as one of the UK’s most focused and distinct musical voices, and he has worked with the likes of Jordan Rakei and Tom Misch, drummer Richard Spaven, producer Lester Duval and singer Emmavie.

Building on the success of 2017’s debut album, Antiphon, which has amassed over 10 million views on YouTube, 2019’s Structuralism and 2021’s debut for ANTI-, Bring Backs, Variables now finds Alfa moving forwards with renewed intensity and purpose. “The whole album is more uptempo and influenced by the freedom of returning to gigs,” Alfa explains. “It feels like I’m coming back to my early days of making grime beats and creating tracks that make me want to bop my head fast.”

In addition to his own music, Alfa currently heads up his own label Sekito, releasing records from Jamie Leeming, trumpeter Jsphynx and bassist Rudi Creswick, with more slated for 2023. He also hosts the Are We Live podcast with Barney Artist and Jordan Rakei.
