Co-produced by Jim James and Tucker Martine (R.E.M., Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists) in the band’s home state of Kentucky, CIRCUITAL proved a major leap forward for My Morning Jacket, matching homespun intimacy with their signature commitment to constant exploration. In keeping with their career-long devotion to their purest creative impulses, the band embraced an unchecked spontaneity throughout the recording process, a decision that ultimately led them into thrilling new directions. The result marked a stunning reinvention of the MMJ sound, simultaneously forging new ground while maintaining the distinct spirit of the band’s previous work. Originally released May 31, 2011, CIRCUITAL debuted at #5 on the overall Billboard 200 upon its initial arrival – the band’s highest charting debut thus far. Highlighted by such fan favorites as “Holdin On To Black Metal,” “Victory Dance,” and the seven-minute epic title track, the album earned My Morning Jacket their second of three consecutive GRAMMY® Award nominations for “Best Alternative Music Album” along with international acclaim from such outlets as Rolling Stone, which wrote, “(CIRCUITAL) feels like the culmination of the sonic adventures the band began with 2005’s Z – while also capturing the power and dynamics that have made MMJ one of the greatest live bands of their generation.

Every record is like a time machine and we all keep changing and changing,” says Jim James. “I’ve come to see myself as a kind of older sibling to the younger version of me, so it’s almost like I become two beings when I sing a song from the olden times: one is the person who wrote the song so long ago, the other is the current me who’s there as support for my younger self, alive forever in the multiverse. And then those two voices combine to form something new and different every time.

CIRCUITAL (DELUXE EDITION) follows last month’s digital premiere of LIVE FROM RCA STUDIO A (ACOUSTIC), available now via ATO Records at all DSPs and streaming services. Originally released earlier this year as a Record Store Day vinyl exclusive, the LP collects seven tracks from 2021’s acclaimed MY MORNING JACKET, recorded solo by frontman Jim James at the famed RCA Studios in Nashville. Official live performance videos of the session are streaming now at YouTube.

Recorded live at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL on November 11, 2021, MMJ LIVE VOL. 2: CHICAGO 2021 features a six-sided, 20-song setlist of career highlights, spanning new tracks from MY MORNING JACKET to classic cuts and fan favorites like “Dondante,” “Mahgeetah,” and “Phone Went West.”

Announces New Album Land of Sleeper
Out February 17th on Missing Piece Group Records

Shares New Track “Mr Medicine”

New Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dates Announced

November 1, 2022: The Newcastle, UK-based group Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs has announced their upcoming album, Land of Sleeper to be released on February 17th via Missing Piece Group Records. Today the group has also shared their new track, “Mr Medicine,” a Stooges-like exploration of powerful, repetitive and uplifting rock. Land of Sleeper is available for preorder now.

Listen: “Mr Medicine

Last month Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs offered a first glimpse of the album in the form of a blistering live performance video of the track “Terror’s Pillow.”

The group has also announced two new U.S. tour dates, performing in Brooklyn on March 11th at Saint Vitus and Los Angeles on March 21st at Zebulon. Tickets will be on sale here on Friday November 4th. They will also be performing in Austin at SXSW in 2023.

Land of Sleeper is the heavy-psych/garage-rock band’s fourth studio album and follows 2020’s Viscerals, which Under The Radar described as a “sense bludgeoning amalgamation of metal, punk, and experimental noise at its most brutal,” while Louder declared it “Utterly enthralling.” Kerrang writes, “melding the fuzzed-up, stripped-back muscle of heavyweights like Black Sabbath and Motörhead to progressive sludginess, then pouring on a generous helping of the wryly abstract humor of IDLES, this third album is a strange, unruly offering.”

“I’ve always liked the quote: “Sleep, those little slices of death - how I loathe them.”
So reckons Matt Baty, vocalist and lyricist of a band as comfortable wading through the darker quarters of their subconscious as they are punishing ampstacks.

Whether dwelling in the realm of dreams or nightmares, the primordial drive of the band is more powerful than ever. Land of Sleeper, their fourth record in a decade of riot and rancor, is testimony to this: the sound of a band not so much reinvigorated as channeling a furious energy, which only appears to gather momentum as the band’s surroundings spin on their axis.

"Shouting about themes of existential dread comes very naturally to me, and I think because I'm aware of that in the past I've tried to rein that in a little" reckons Matt. "There's definitely moments on this album where I took my gloves off and surrendered to that urge."

Whether this means Pigs, a band once associated with reckless excess, have taken a darker turn to match the dystopian realm of the 2022 everyday, is open to debate. The band themselves aren't necessarily convinced; "Sobriety does funny things to a man" reckons guitarist Adam Ian Sykes wryly.

"I know from my perspective, I was trying to write some much heavier and darker music" says guitarist and producer Sam Grant. "But this was an aim more as a counterpoint to earlier material, as opposed to any sort of political or social commentary. I still very much see these heavier moments as musically euphoric, and emotionally cut loose or liberating."

"For obvious reasons, the anticipation for the writing of Land of Sleeper was unlike anything we’d felt before" Adam adds. "These sessions were an almost religious experience for me. It felt like we were working in unison, connected to some unknowable hive mind."

For all that, the last few years have seen Pigs' stature rise in the wake of triumphant festival slots and sold-out venues alike, this remains a band, consummated by bassist John-Michael Hedley and returning drummer Ewan Mackenzie, who are fundamentally incapable of tailoring their sound to a prospective audience, instead standing alone and impervious as a monument of catharsis.

"Writing and playing music is often surprising and revealing, it can be like holding up a mirror and seeing things you didn't expect to see" reckons Mackenzie. "For me, the darker tracks on the record hold in common a determination not to lose faith, despite the odds."

The better to unite slumber and waking, Land Of Sleeper is no less than an act of transcendence for Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - new anthems to elucidate a world sleepwalking to oblivion.

Land of Sleeper Tracklist:
1. Ultimate Hammer
2. Terror’s Pillow
3. Big Rig
4. The Weatherman
5. Mr Medicine
6. Pipe Down!
7. Atlas Stone
8. Ball Lightning

Miss Grit Announces Debut Album - Follow the Cyborg

MISS GRIT

ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM
FOLLOW THE CYBORG
OUT FEBRUARY 24, 2023

WATCH THE “FOLLOW THE CYBORG” VIDEO
credit: Hoseon Sohn
Miss Grit, the New York-based, Korean-American musician Margaret Sohn (they/she), announces Follow the Cyborg, their debut album out February 24th on Mute, and presents the title track and accompanying video. On Follow the Cyborg, Sohn pursues the path of a non-human machine, as it moves from its helpless origin to awareness and liberation. At times gentle and sparse, at times volatile and explosive, it occupies a sonic world of electronic experimentation and stirring electric guitars. As described by Pitchfork, “[Miss Grit] refuses to pack her songs into tidy, predictable shapes, instead allowing them to sprawl and rip.”

Miss Grit has released two acclaimed EPs over the past three years, Talk, Talk, about the complexities of relationships, and Impostor “a confident and searching meditation” (New York Times) on grappling with identity which “melds airy melody, ricocheting delays and bitcrushed riffs” (Guitar World). Their self-produced debut, Follow the Cyborg, was recorded entirely in their home studio, and mostly in solitude with several guest collaborators joining - Stella Mozgawa of WarpaintAron Kobayashi Ritch of Momma, and Pearla

Miss Grits’ impetus to conceive an album about the life of a cyborg stems from their own connection to this way of existing. As a mixed-race, non-binary artist, Sohn has always rejected the limits of identity thrust upon them by the outside world, in favor of embracing a more fluid and complex understanding of the self. Hailed by Rolling Stone as an “inventive, incisive singer-songwriter,” their process is introspective, their vision precise. In their exploration of the life of a cyborg, they subtly and overtly refer to films, including Her, Ex Machina, and Ghost in the Shell, as well as essays by Jia Tolentino (from Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion) and Donna Horroway’s A Cyborg Manifesto

Today’s “Follow the Cyborg” appears on the album twice - performed in English as well as in Korean (사이보그를 따라와), Miss Grit’s second language-in-progress. This moment represents their reclaiming of both cultural identities; neither of which feel exactly like home without the other intertwined.  Following previously-released “Like You,” “Follow the Cyborg” hums with synth and Sohn’s controlled tenor. Percussion from Mozgawa signals a more upbeat turn, the track expanding with vibrant guitar lines and swells of saxophone. The accompanying video for the English version, out today, is a stunning cinematic piece directed by Curry Sicong Tian, going hand in hand with their film inspirations. Its opening is neon-tinged, culling colors from films like Fallen Angels, and later divulges with high-fashion, futuristic scenes and aesthetics found in aforementioned anime. “I wanted to place my body in the cyber world, allowing the different variations of my ghost to move about freely,” says Sohn. “I wanted to look a little freakish, unrecognizable to myself to avoid my instinctive filtration.”

Sarathy Korwar shares new single 'Remember To Look Out For The Signs'

Sarathy Korwar - Remember To Look Out For The Signs

SK9E RGB72

Following the singles ‘Utopia Is a A Colonial Project’ and 'Remember Begum Rokheya’, ‘Remember To Look Out For The Signs’ is the third track taken from Sarathy Korwar’s new album KALAK – an indo-futurist manifesto.

KALAK is the palindromic form of Kal – a Hindi/Urdu word meaning yesterday and also tomorrow – and represents the ancient/futuristic cyclical rhythm coined by Sarathy that makes up the heart of the record. Nowhere is this represented more than on ‘Remember To Look Out For The Signs’, where Korwars rhythms close out the record and bring things full circle, ready to begin again.

Download: 'Remember To Look Out For The Signs' + press release

“’Remember To Look Out For The Signs' is currently my favourite song on the album,” Korwar explains. “Hypnotic and polyrhythmic drum grooves that epitomise the cyclicality of KALAK. It's a warning call, a reminder that change happens incrementally and if we don't pay attention, it might be too late.”

KALAK will be released on November 11th in three vinyl editions (on black, dark green, and for a special Dinked Edition, crystal clear vinyl) and a CD, each featuring a different cover image. All editions include an 8-page booklet, created by Sijya Gupta, with Korwar’s notes on the concepts behind the project. The Dinked Edition, available exclusively from select independent UK record shops will also include a rotating card KALAK rhythm wheel.

U.S. Girls: New Single 'Bless The Mess'

Meg Remy, the experimental alt-pop chameleon U.S. Girls. enters her diva era with the ballad ‘Bless This Mess’.  Released today, the song follows her summer synth anthem, ‘So Typically Now’ and is accompanied by an extraordinary music video created by Remy and artist Evan Gordon.

Listen to 'Bless This Mess' on all platforms here +

Remy explains -

“Before camera phones, the family camcorder was often the mirror tool used to capture selfie-like performances of teenage daydreams and insecurities.  Recently I unearthed a VHS tape housing footage of my 1998 self singing on top of my favourite songs of the day, along with my 2000 self publicly performing music for the first time, plus various other blush-worthy self-portraits.  I decided to air out this acutely personal footage.  My meta music video vision: 1998 self singing a song that 2020 self wrote.

The artist Evan Gordon manually assembled this performance that never was.  He explains his process: “I buckled down and painstakingly dragged the eight-minute clip over each word of the song, forwards and then backwards, splitting off any partial or direct match.  Beyond my expectations, I was able to find multiple matches for each phrase.  From here, I worked on stitching the clips together to make complete phrases, selecting from my list of matches much like making a comp of vocal takes.  This video is a realfake.  It’s naturally authentic while being transparently fake.  Its intent is not to deceive or convince, but rather to induce reflection and remembrance.”

Meg Remy of U.S. Girls, photographed by Emma McIntyre

Originally from Illinois, Meg Remy is established as one of the most acclaimed songwriters and performers to emerge from Toronto’s eclectic underground music scene where she currently lives.  As the creative force behind the musical entity U.S. Girls, her celebrated discography spans 15 years from early experimental works released on the Siltbreeze label, and includes three Polaris Prize shortlisted albums released by 4AD: Half Free (2015), In A Poem Unlimited (2018), and Heavy Light (2020).  All three albums also garnered Juno nominations for Best Alternative Album.  Meg has toured extensively through Europe and North America, establishing a reputation for politically astute commentary and theatrical performances with her extended U.S. Girls band, named the best live act of 2018 by Paste Magazine.  During this time Remy has maintained a visual arts practice, exhibiting collage work and directing several music videos and other video art works including her short film Woman’s Advocate (2014), in which she also performed.  Recently Remy published her first book, a memoir called Begin By Telling (2021).
