"His familiar dreamlike structural plodding is still intact with a bit of psych spaciness thrown in for good measure, moving the songwriter’s musical existence in forward motion." - SPIN

"He’s an expert folk guitarist and an engagingly laconic vocalist." - The Philadelphia Inquirer

M. Ward has shared a new rendition of The Sugarcubes song “Birthday” today, listen to it HERE.

“I learned this old song a long time ago but never performed or recorded it until I made this a month ago in Portland - the lyrics have always seemed timeless and southern gothic, like Flannery O’Connor to me,” Ward explained. “When I shifted the music down a few steps to an open tuning I discovered in the key of B as in "birthday".”

This January M. Ward will embark on a European tour, his first European tour dates since the release of the two albums he put out in 2020, ‘Migration Stories’ and ‘Think Of Spring’. All upcoming dates are listed below.

Released last December, ‘Think of Spring’ is a moving rendition of Billie Holiday’s album ‘Lady In Satin’. “The combination of vintage tech and classic tunes creates a bit of a dreamy shimmer, a quality that suits Ward’s quiet rearrangements of familiar tunes,” Pitchfork said of the record.

Also called ‘spare and haunting’ by Portland Monthly, ‘Think of Spring’ features classic songs “You’ve Changed” – originally written in the ‘40s by Carl Fischer - and “All The Way”, famously sung by both Holiday and Frank Sinatra. Additionally, “For All We Know” is a wistful yet beautiful track, saying: “we come and go like a ripple on a stream / tomorrow may never come for all we know.” Listen to the record HERE.

“Harridan” heralds the release of Porcupine Tree’s long awaited 11th studio album, CLOSURE / CONTINUATION, due via Music For Nations/Megaforce Records on Friday, June 24, 2022. In addition, a limited audiophile deluxe LP will also be available, cut at 45rpm on 3x12” clear vinyl in 12” slipcase box with two bonus tracks; a limited audiophile deluxe CD in 12” slipcase box will include the standard CD, a second disc with three bonus tracks and instrumentals, Blu-ray disc with 5.1/Dolby Atmos and HD audio versions of the album, and an exclusive album art book. Pre-orders are available now.

PRE-ORDER CLOSURE / CONTINUATION

“‘Harridan’ and a few of the other new songs have been in play since shortly after the release of THE INCIDENT,” says Porcupine Tree. “They initially lived on a hard drive in a slowly growing computer file marked PT2012, later renamed PT2015, PT2018, and so on. There were times when we even forgot they were there, and times when they nagged us to finish them to see where they would take us. Listening to the finished pieces, it was clear that this wasn’t like any of our work outside of the band – the combined DNA of the people behind the music meant these tracks were forming what was undeniably, unmistakably, obviously a Porcupine Tree record. You’ll hear all of that DNA flowing right through ‘Harridan.’”

Porcupine Tree – Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri, and Gavin Harrison – will celebrate their long overdue return with a wide-ranging world tour, set to hit North America next fall. The band recently unveiled a series of European and UK live shows – their first since October 2010 – getting underway October 21, 2022 in Berlin, Germany and then culminating at London’s world famous SSE Arena, Wembley on November 11. One of the most forward-thinking, genre-defying rock bands of any era, Porcupine Tree was founded in 1987 by renowned musician/producer Steven Wilson as an outlet for the experimental recordings he was making outside of his acclaimed post-rock duo, No-Man. With the addition of keyboard player Richard Barbieri and drummer Gavin Harrison, Porcupine Tree soon evolved into a proper band, releasing 10 studio albums between 1992 and 2009. Each new release saw Porcupine Tree exploring new musical ideas, their expansive music shifting from pastoral psychedelic rock and ambient electronic soundscapes to experimental pop and propulsive metal. Later releases like 2007’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated Fear of a Blank Planet and 2009’s The Incident – the band’s biggest seller thus far, reaching the top 25 in both the US and the UK – saw Porcupine Tree effortlessly melding distinctive genres to create a groundbreaking musical universe all their own.

As relentlessly creative on stage as they are in the studio, Porcupine Tree proved innovative live performers known for sonic innovation and inventive visual productions. In October 2010, the band entered a period of hiatus following a spectacular concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall – their biggest live show to date.

The most collaborative album of their highly lauded career, CLOSURE / CONTINUATION doesn’t simply pick up where Porcupine Tree left off back in 2010. While the familiar traits of the band’s idiosyncratic sound remain intact, the new album very much places Porcupine Tree in the here and now, with greater texture and color than ever before.

The organizers of WisdomSound believe that the teachings of the Buddha offer powerful methods to deal with suffering, and guide people toward compassionate action. At Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery and Nagi Nunnery, monastics spend years practicing these powerful 2500-year-old methods, and then teach them in Nepal, online, and throughout the Shedrub Mandala's international network of centers and organizations. Compelled by the Buddha’s teachings to care for others, the monastery also supports social action in Nepal—from providing traditional and secular education to young children from rural villages, to offering food packages to subsistence workers impacted by the pandemic, to supporting women’s health and empowerment.
In addition to musical performances, the event will feature a brief teaching and an introduction to Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling by Tibetan Buddhist meditation master Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, who serves as the monastery’s abbott. The 75-minute program will also include short videos showcasing the monastery, including the lives of young monks and nuns there, and the monastery’s social work activities in and around the Kathmandu Valley, along with its satellite institutions around the world.

About Frankie & The Witch Fingers:
If you tune your ears to the cracks in the San Andreas and listen in for the world gurgling grind, you might come close to the tectonic thunder that’s been beaming out of L.A. for the past few years under the banner of Frankie and the Witch Fingers. Hashed and hardened in the Midwest Indy enclave of Bloomington and catching the ear of the Chicago psych contingent with their early singles, the band headed West around the same time that the crew at Permanent put up shop in the Golden State. With records spread across labels like Hypnotic Bridge, Permanent, Greenway, and The Reverberation Appreciation Society, the band has been an ever-evolving force of rhythm-ripped rock 'n roll pummel ever since. Anchored by songwriters Dylan Sizemore and Josh Menashe, the band has kept a rotating door of friends and collaborators moving through their midst along the way, with each bringing their own particular melt to the mountain of sound the Witch Fingers maintain.

Following the ambitious arc of their opus Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters… the band has burrowed further into the street tar grip and pelvic pulse of L.A. rock 'n roll euphoria with an oil-slick drop-kick of a single — “Cookin’ b/w Tracksuit.” The new single pushes the band further towards the propulsive pulpit that they’d approached on the last album, finding their footing as they traverse more soulful-funk and Afrobeat territory than ever before. Recorded in the band’s practice space, a concrete box in the warehouse district of Vernon, CA, the double-dose of sweat-soul psychedelia is infused with the glorious grit of their surroundings — bleeding in a mixture of hot garbage and freshly baked cookies to the aura of the track. While the tempos remain riveted, the band, like any, weren’t left untouched by the upheaval of the past year and a half. There’s a palpable chaos brewing beneath the pair of songs that can’t help but feel informed by the fevered pulse of 2020.

The band will accompany the release of the new single with a 5 week U.S. tour, putting the group back into their natural habitat up on the stage, steaming under the hot lights and sublimating a heady mix of psych-soul singe into a full-body buzz. Drummer Shaughnessy Starr will bow out for this run as friend and kindred spirit Jon Modaff steps into the rhythm seat for these shows. Meanwhile, a familiar face, the band’s friend and long-time collaborator Nikki Pickle (Death Valley Girls), has come on board as a permanent bassist following her work on the Monsters tour. With past stints spent opening for luminaries like Oh Sees, Cheap Trick, and ZZ Top, the band has long proven their heft, and the upcoming tour sees them continuing their ascendancy as heirs of the amp stack kingdom.

The Witch Fingers’ legend has only grown over the last few years, and this tour sees them primed to grace bigger venues than ever, finding the band headlining their first show at at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom, sharing the stage with Kikagaku Moyo for Levitation in Austin, and stopping at the venerable Shaky Knees Fest in Atlanta. While the last record and an ensuing storm of dates made Frankie and the Witch Fingers a household handle — burning through a barrage of multicolored vinyl pressings and sparring with indie heavyweights for Billboard chart positions — the band returns from the forge that was 2020 to make a case for the rapture of the stage once more. Bringing an audience back to the wellspring to connect to these songs on a metaphysical level, the band transforms the stage into a sonic scrub for the soul. With years spent pressure-coating their sound into a diamond-hard hydra of heaviness, the band enters its next phase hungry for the heat of the throng and ready to wrap the Witch Fingers’ grip tighter around the reins of rock.

SEA CHANGE announces new album & shares first single "Night Eyes". Album 'Mutual Dreaming'

SEA CHANGE

- Announces new album 'Mutual Dreaming' due Feb 11th via Shapes Recordings
- Shares first single "Night Eyes"

Sea Change, the project of Norwegian producer & singer Ellen A. W. Sunde, is back with a new album 'Mutual Dreaming' set for release Feb 11th via Shapes Recordings. The first single from the album "Night Eyes" is streaming online now.

Speaking about the track, Sea Change said "'Night Eyes' is about the need to shut off your head and just be your body for a while - how good it can feel to lose control. I wanted to produce a danceable sensual track, and it's one of my personal favourites from the album. A friend of mine told me that when she heard it it felt like she was floating in rave space - an image that I absolutely love."

Music sometimes takes place in a world that’s more emotional than rational, less something you think about and more something you feel. That’s the home turf of the new album from Sea Change – Mutual Dreaming. With inspiration from the world of club music, another dreamspace where reality seems to slip, these songs come from a place where shadows of memories and feelings dance in the listener’s sub-consciousness. With its subtle, infectious sense of rhythm, delivered through fractured, hallucinogenic electronica, the music here moves through your body like a pulse, for a record that manages to be both enigmatic and elusive, and at the same time totally compelling.

Sea Change is the project of Norway’s Ellen A. W. Sunde. From her debut album, 2015’s Breakage, to her music today, her sound has fluctuated and mutated – from airy, atmospheric pop to bubbling, shapeshifting electronica, but her creative vision hasn’t changed. With whatever style she’s working with, she’s on a mission to push and stretch it into new shapes, to explore the fringes of what the music can become. Across three records, it’s made for a musical vision that’s adventurous, hard to pin down, and even harder to predict. And on the latest of those albums, Mutual Dreaming, that’s more the case than ever before, as she follows her feelings in painting an intuitive, impressionistic world that wraps itself around the listener.

Her previous album INSIDE was inspired by club culture in Los Angeles and Berlin – having spent some time exploring the hazy spaces of those clubs, she made her own version of that feeling in sound. In terms of time and place at least, Mutual Dreaming was born somewhere very different. Sunde relocated back to Norway, to the southern coastal town of Kristiansand, and had just started work on the new album when lockdown hit. So instead of the overstimulation of city life, the new album was made with a distinct absence of input from the outside world. Still, Sunde found she enjoyed it. “It was very quiet”, she says. "I could really concentrate on making new music. In a way, it was starting from scratch. The vibe was very explorative, and I had fun making it. It was easier to dive into it when there weren’t any distractions”. Sunde was keen to explore the physical side of music in the songs, the way it interacts with the body: “Music can be very primal. When you are going clubbing and dancing you can lose yourself in your own headspace, and be more in time with your body".

With her new music, Sunde wanted to make something fresh and fast, even setting herself the challenge of making the album as quickly as possible, so she could follow her ideas without overthinking or over-processing them. The approach to writing and production (with co-producing help on some of the songs from frequent collaborator Andrew Murray Baardsen at Luft Studio) was driven by impulse and instinct rather than planning, something that gave her freedom: “It was liberating for me, to not think things through too much. To be able to just go where the song could take me. I felt more relaxed when making this one. This album is more deconstructed and very intuitive. With INSIDE, the process was more thought-through. This one was more anti-intellectual and also very visual. I often see images when I produce music, like different scenes in movies''. Even the lyrics followed this approach, written first as filler to suit the sound of the track, and then later reworked and remoulded to serve its mood. “It was very intuitive and stream-of-consciousness”, she says. “Visceral and very introspective”.

What emerged from that process is an album of fractured, spectral electronic music. Despite that fracturing, the sense of rhythm remains - the music on Mutual Dreaming is driven by a strange, morphing danceability, a clockwork sense of groove. Beats steer the songs and provide their overarching structure, like on opener “I Put My Hand Into A Fist”, where the other parts of the song, the shivering synths and fluttering snares, swirl like currents around it. “Everything we made is fluid” intones Sunde on that song, and that goes for the whole album, a feeling of nothing being fixed, a constant flux. As you move from song to song, the mood changes slowly, like a sky shifting from light to dark. All the way through, the texture and tone are perfectly engineered, to the point where you almost feel them physically – “Mirages” slowly rises, softly making contact with your senses, like the feeling of gentle waves washing over you, whereas “Night Eyes” pulls you, into murkier, heavier territory. Sunde says she sees the record visually, and it’s one that almost demands you close your eyes when listening to it, to let the music draw its shapes and scenes in your own imagination.

The music’s deconstructed nature, the way it refuses to slip into any structure for very long, fits into the record’s theme. Sunde sees freedom in Mutual Dreaming, not only for her, in an emotional sense, but also for the outside listener, who is given the interpretive space by the album to follow their own path through it, somewhere in the floating interzone of its sounds. “I prefer a more abstract framework”, she says. “I rarely find it so interesting to write songs with a clear song structure - I'd rather explore a freer form”.

So ultimately, and in a nod to its title, Mutual Dreaming is a record that can draw as much from its listener as from the artist herself. The blurry, murky world these songs inhabit moves restlessly, always dissolving and reforming – leaving it to the observer to find their own meaning in it. It’s a record where Sea Change found her way in fragments, letting her feelings guide her, and then knitted those fragments into a vision of dance music that’s free-floating and immersive, a space where reality’s grip seems to lose its hold. It’s beyond club music, beyond its inspirations, and in the sonic richness and detail you can find the power of something beyond words - put it on, and the normal world feels very far away.
