JENNY LEWIS & SERENGETI UNVEIL SURPRISE COLLABORATION “UNBLU”

NEW SONG AND VIDEO OUT TODAY VIA LOVES WAY

Jenny Lewis and Chicago-based rapper Serengeti (aka David Cohn) have announced an unexpected gift just ahead of the holiday season: “Unblu” – available now via Jenny’s own label Loves Way, with an accompanying video directed by Jenny.

“Unblu” was produced by Jenny and Andrew Broder.

In a note to fans, Jenny and Serengeti recall their fortuitous meeting and how their collaboration flourished despite quarantine lockdown:

Jenny met Dave down a long hallway in a former Communist Media Center in East Berlin during the People Festival of 2018. Dave asked Jenny to sing on a song about Tom Selleck passing on the part of Indiana Jones. Can you imagine a world where Tom Selleck is Indiana Jones?

A fast friendship was born as they skulked about, cracking jokes and chatting about their mutual love for boxing.

Jenny threw a show for Dave at Dino’s in East Nashville when they returned from Europe. The bartenders said it was the best show they ever had. Jenny was among the 9 fans that attended and danced their asses off.

To cap the torrid evening, Dave said “J, I need 7 tracks! Just piano or guitar or whatever!” Jenny inquired if one would do? 

Then the world shut down and Jenny & Dave hunkered down in Los Angeles & Chicago, respectively. Jenny smoked weed every day and Dave stayed totally sober.

The result is five songs made on Jenny’s iPhone, for Dave. Beats, bass, drums, digital tanpura & topline, sent via text, ripe for Dave’s poetry. To accompany the music, Jenny made videos on her phone during the witching hours, editing while under the covers.

Then Jenny texted the tracks to another People alumnus–Andrew Broder in Minneapolis—who co-produced and mixed the songs, taking them from Garageband phone music to music that gently thumps you. Music to dance around your living room in a Day-Glo bathing suit to. Music to go bananas to while watching the news & Forensic Files on mute.

8x GRAMMY Award nominees Death Cab for Cutie have today announced plans for The Georgia E.P. – a 5-track EP set for release this Friday, December 4^th, exclusively via Bandcamp. Featuring covers of iconic artists from the state of Georgia, the project will be available for download for just 24 hours (beginning at 12:01am PT), with all net proceeds going to Fair Fight Action, Stacey Abrams’ voter’s rights organization that promotes fair elections around the country through voter education, election reform, and combating voter suppression.   

The tracklist for the EP includes never-before-heard new covers of TLC, R.E.M., Neutral Milk Hotel, Cat Power, and Vic Chesnutt (full tracklist below) and seeks to recognize and support the organization leading up to the Georgia runoffs and in honor of their work throughout the entire 2020 election cycle.  

The project was recorded remotely over four days in the band members’ respective home studios and mixed just a couple days later. “In a year where so much of what we love to do has been put on pause,” the band shared in a note to fans this morning, “it felt so good to be making music together again.” 

Speaking on the inspirations behind the project and their partnership with the organization, Ben Gibbard shares: 

We created this exclusive e.p. of songs by some of our favorite Georgia artists for our friend Stacey Abrams and all the hard-working people at Fair Fight Action. We strongly believe in the work Fair Fight has done to assure free and fair elections in Georgia and beyond and have been honored to assist them throughout the 2020 campaign. 

The band recently supported Fair Fight Action via their participation in the multi-artist compilation Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy – another Bandcamp Fridays initiative whose net proceeds benefitted the organization. A recording of “The New Year” live from Seattle’s The Showbox and a demo of “Only Love Will Save This Place” (a collaboration between Gibbard and Tycho) were featured alongside previously unreleased recordings from artists including My Morning Jacket, Hayley Williams, Phoebe Bridgers, The National’s Matt Berninger, Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, Rostam, Best Coast, and many more.  

This Thursday, Gibbard will participate in ‘Rock the Runoff’ – a virtual concert curated by Fair Fight featuring local and national artists, with net proceeds going towards the non-profit’s voter mobilization efforts leading up to the upcoming runoff elections. Other performers include John Legend, Common, Ant Clemons and Justin Timberlake, Monica, Indigo Girls, Earthgang and more. The ticketed show is set to air online beginning at 9pm ET, with tickets available for purchase here. 

In August, Death Cab for Cutie held a fundraising auction We Have The Facts And We’re Voting 2020 – raising over $50K to help support voter rights and combat voter suppression ahead of the general election. Donations benefitted both Fair Fight Action as well as the organization Future Now. Auction items ranged from exclusive merch, signed test pressings, one-on-one music lessons, and even a grand prize of a private acoustic concert with the band.  

Throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gibbard has helped raise over $250K in donations and supplies for various Seattle-area relief organizations via his series of at-home livestreams. A highlight of the early days of quarantine for so many, the shows included songs from throughout his career with Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service and his solo material, along with covers and other surprises. They have been viewed over 4.5 million times, and were featured by outlets such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Variety, NPR, and more, and prompted Stereogum to ask, “Is Ben Gibbard going to single-handedly get us all through quarantine?” 

Gibbard has also released two new singles during this time: “Promixa B” and “Life in Quarantine,” with the former debuted in April during the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum virtual concert Space Songs: Through the Distance and the latter composed for Seattle alt-weekly The Stranger’s A Message to the City series in late March. Net proceeds from the release of “Life in Quarantine” benefitted the homelessness-support services nonprofit Aurora Commons, a welcoming space for unhoused Seattle residents to rest, prepare a meal, connect to resources, and collectively create a healthy and vibrant community. Gibbard performed the song live on both The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Lia Ices Shares "Earthy" - New Track + Video, 'Family Album' out 1/29 on Natural Music

Photo Credit: Melodi Meadows    Lia Ices has shared a new single, “Earthy,” off her upcoming LP Family Album, which is set for release January 29, 2021 (Natural Music). The track, the album’s opener, is a gorgeous and dynamic song. It commences with Lia solo on the piano and midway through becomes a total psych-Americana jam. And though it starts the album off, even by the end it’s clear this is the record’s centerpiece, both its introduction and its heart; she sings about the Muse, about life and death, about both being here and giving herself away in order to find herself. The accompanying video for “Earthy” was shot on super 8 footage by Conor Hagen. The single premiered via American Songwriter and Ices told them “Earthy was one of those songs that came out fully formed, as if it was a gift from another dimension that I’m still trying to decode. It reflects on the idea that my music, and the process of revealing myself through art, is rooted in The Natural World — the earthy — my catalyst for discovery. We wanted to bring to life the feeling I had up on the mountain, playing solo at the piano, where I would get lost in thought, surrounded by nature, where a whole cacophony of music builds around me, like a fairy tale. It’s basically what happens when I sit down at the piano and the spirit moves me to compose.” Of the single they note, “Earthy” taps a darker vein, warmer and more comforting in its largely acoustic opening half of the song, her voice a mixture between Lissie’s farm-rich folkpop and Regina Spektor’s husky eccentric alto. “Earthy” starts out as a lilting lullaby, accompanied solely by a gentle piano. Like many of Ices’ signature songs, however, “Earthy” takes a slight left turn half way through, encroaching peculiar Joanna Newsom territory, dynamically shifting to a psychedelic aria with a swirl of warpy guitars and brushed percussion. It’s this intriguing interplay between soft and loud that maintains that while this is a slightly marked departure from her earlier material, it hasn’t strayed too far from her essence. This album means something different to me now that the person I made it with is gone — it is a symbolic reminder that music is eternal, he lives forever in this album.”   Lia And JR recorded Family Tree all over California: three studios in LA, one in Stinson Beach, and one in San Francisco. “There's a clarity to the album,” Ices says of the production, “you can hear what I'm saying, you can hear what the instruments are doing. But I really think that because the production supports the ethos you can dive in even deeper.” It was organic: Ices, White, and the four-man backing band she had record with her, live in the studio. It’s been a long personal journey to get to Family Album, which she’s putting out on her own label, Natural Music. After over a decade on the east coast, from New York City to the Hudson Valley, this is Ices’ first California album. It’s also a return to the piano, written on the precipice of motherhood. “Coming to California and living on the mountain and being in nature, and then starting to grow a human, I wanted to make something without having any ulterior motives other than letting what naturally happens, happen,” she says. She felt parallels between her musical output and occupying an archetypically feminine space; being confronted with the intense, grounding feelings surrounding motherhood made it hard to bullshit pretty much anything. Written during the first of three weeks in which Ices and her husband were evacuated from their home during the forest fires in 2017, “Family Album” is about immediacy and memory, and again that piercing contrast between the beauty of nature and its aloofness. “Making art is communal,” says Ices. But that doesn’t mean Family Album isn’t the most Lia Ices album to ever exist. Part of that is allowing a higher level of collaboration than ever before, part is motherhood, part is Sonoma’s Edenic Moon Mountain, part is the Wild West freedom inherent in Californian lifestyle, part is an awareness of herself, and, most significantly, of growing ever more into that. Ices started her own label, Natural Music, because she felt empowered by herself, by the places that she was able to reach within herself and translate into music, and she wanted to follow the freedom that feeling gave her. “There's a synchronicity to it, about the way things have happened or who I've met,” Ices says of Family Album.
