The 7"s b-side is the 2018 Adult Swim single "Adored," available physically for the first time. Of the release Hatchie’s Harriette Pilbeam says: “it was a dream come true to record this cover of one of my favourite collaborations with one of my favourite artists. I’m so glad it’s finally getting released because it’s extra special to me.” The limited Sometimes Always 7” is available for pre-order and due June 20th via Double Double Whammy and Heavenly/Ivy League. 100% of sales from this release on Bandcamp Day this Friday, June 5 will be donated to The Movement for Black Lives and The Loveland Foundation. Hollywood Park: A Memoir, the critically lauded debut book by Mikel Jollett, frontman for The Airborne Toxic Event, debuts at #8 on the New York Times Best Seller List. The band's companion album by the same name lands at #4 on the Alternative Chart and #6 on the magazine's Rock Chart. The chart numbers back up this incredible and unique musical/literary achievement that shows the breadth of Jollett's myriad talents and the powerful ways those talents intersect. 

The memoir tells the story of Jolett's traumatic early life. It begins with a four-year-old Mikel and his brother, Tony, being spirited out of the notorious and violent Santa Monica, California cult, Synanon, by their mother. Jollett's life to that point was one with no parents, and no idea of them, as the cult leaders kept children from their families. On the run from Synanon with their damaged and dangerously narcissistic mom, Jollett and his brother embarked on a harrowing journey that eventually led them to Salem, Oregon, where they lived in poverty. It was his father (a former Chico State Penitentiary inmate, who Jollett didn't really know until he was 7) who recognized that young Mikel had special gifts and urged him not to be like any of the other Jollett men, but to aspire to something bigger and better. This put him on a path to getting a scholarship from Stanford (he graduated with honors) and to starting the Airborne Toxic Event which became an immediate sensation the moment they released their first single, "Sometime Around Midnight."

Hollywood Park is easily the most ambitious album ever made by The Airborne Toxic Event; who are, with Jollett, Steven Chen (guitars, keyboards), Darren Taylor (drums), and bassist Adrian Rodriguez. On the album, Jollett's songs give further depth to stories from the book. He weaves musical references ranging from shoegaze to Springsteen into a cohesive aural tapestry, producing an unsparing memoir full of intimate, often painful personal details, that unlock universal coming-of-age themes. With these towering twin works, Jollett has channeled his artistry into a compelling and multi-layered pop-cultural milestone. The album was produced and mixed by the band's longtime collaborator, multiple GRAMMY® Award-nominee Mark Needham (The Killers, Fleetwood Mac).

"'American Crisis' is a tale of two times," says Mould. "Past Time and Present Time. The parallels between 1984 and 2020 are a bit scary for me: telegenic, charismatic leaders, praised and propped up by extreme Evangelicals, either ignoring an epidemic (HIV/AIDS) or being outright deceitful about a pandemic (COVID-19)." BLUE HEARTS is perhaps the most directly confrontational work of Bob Mould's four-decade career, a raging 14-track collection described by its creator as "the catchiest batch of protest songs I've ever written in one sitting." Produced by Mould at Chicago's famed Electrical Audio with longtime collaborator Beau Sorenson engineering, the album - which once again features backing from the crack rhythm section of drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy - nods to the veteran singer-songwriter's groundbreaking past while remaining firmly planted in the issues of the day. Where SUNSHINE ROCK captured Mould at his most "violently happy" (according to Rolling Stone), BLUE HEARTS is both seething and pointed, the raging yin to the previous album's positive yang. The acoustic opener, "Heart on My Sleeve" catalogues the ravages of climate change, while "American Crisis" - written initially for SUNSHINE ROCK but deemed "too heavy" by its writer - spits plainspoken fire at the people who fomented this catastrophic moment in history: "I never thought I'd see this bullshit again / To come of age in the '80s was bad enough / We were marginalized and demonized / I watched a lot of my generation die / Welcome back to American crisis."

 

Elsewhere, the political and personal collide on songs like "Everyth!ng to You," "The Ocean," and the salaciously autobiographical "Leather Dreams," the latter two composed earlier this year during an epic three-day writing binge prior to January 2020's sold-out Solo Electric tour. As volatile, hook-laden, and aggressively honest as anything in Mould's remarkable canon, BLUE HEARTS is fueled by a pervasive sense of déjà vu, its angry anthems of today equally informed by his experiences and memories of the early 1980s. Back then, Mould was a self-described "22-year-old closeted gay man" touring with the one and only Hüsker Dü as AIDS consumed his community. Leaders - including the one in the White House - seemed content to let the epidemic kill a generation. No wonder Bob Mould found his mind wandering back...

Childe Releases an Alternative Version of "Bad Ideas"

Last month marked the debut single from brand new British artist, Childe. The track possessed a grace and confidence rarely seen in such a young artist. Today, Childe releases an alternate stripped down version of his debut single, "Bad Ideas." “The track deftly melds a contemplative soul ballad with distended bass and fuzzed out harmonics to create a distinctly singular mutant soul sound,” Under The Radar said of the original song. Raised in a bucolic rural town in England, Childe had anything but a fairytale upbringing. His father was a wildcard and entered and exited his life with some regularity. “When I was 14 I went on holiday with my dad,” he said. “He was supposed to be sober and we agreed that he could drink and I could smoke cigarettes. We cycled along a canal and slept in a tent outside different pubs. On the first night, we went to the pub and then he got me stoned for the first time and I lost my shit. At 2am I woke up and threw up all over the tent and him and he had to clean it up. The exact same happened the next night.” The “Bad ideas” cover art is a photo from that trip.  He began writing music as a teenager, deeply inspired by great storytellers like Tracey Chapman and Bright Eyes. He picked up piano and guitar and eventually was enrolled in the legendary performing arts high school - the BRIT school in London. Notable BRIT school alumni include Adele, FKA Twigs, Amy Winehouse, Rex Orange County and King Krule among others. It was there that he was able to escape from the instability of his childhood and find community and collaboration with other artists. He went on to open dates for King Princess and hone the sound you hear in Childe.

Regarding the track, bandleader Nick van Bakel stated: "The Master is kind of about evacuating yourself from the absurd but typical life of working your arse into the ground for someone else and how no matter where you’re working or how high up the ladder you are in that world, there's always a person up higher bossing you around or someone you’re trying to please. I just hate when people flex too much and don't respect people; that’s what the majority of people deal with their whole life. It's miserable and there’s no room for stuff to blossom. The trash that’s suggested in school, movies, and everything; have all your milestones planned out. You wanna make god laugh tell him you've got your life planned!"

Hailing from Melbourne, but with a sound stretching from 60s and 70s Afrobeat and exotica, the proto-garage rhythmic fury of The Monks and the grooves of Os Mutantes, there’s an enticing lost world exoticism to the music of Bananagun. It’s the sort of stuff that could’ve come from a dusty record crate of hidden gems; yet as the punchy, colourfully vibrant pair of sold out singles Do Yeah and Out of Reach have proven over the past 12 months, the band are no revivalists. On debut album The True Story of Bananagun, they make a giant leap forward with their outward-looking blend of global tropical psychedelia.

The True Story of Bananagun marks the group’s first full foray into writing and recording as a complete five piece band, having originally germinated in the bedroom ideas and demos of guitarist, vocalist and flautist Nick van Bakel. The multi-instrumentalist grew up on skate videos, absorbing the hip-hop beats that soundtracked them - taking on touchstones like Self Core label founder Mr. Dibbs and other early 90’s turntablists.

Van Bakel was joined first by cousin Jimi Gregg on drums – the pair’s shared love of the Jungle Book apparently made him a natural fit – and the rest of the group are friends first and foremost, put together as a band because of a shared emphasis on keeping things fun. Jack Crook (guitar/vocals), Charlotte Tobin (djembe/percussion) and Josh Dans (bass) complete the five-piece and between them there’s a freshness and playful spontaneity borne out of late night practice jams and hangs at producer John Lee’s Phaedra Studios in Melbourne.

The band’s seemingly innocuous name has an underlying message of connectivity that matches the universality of the music. “It’s like non-violent combat! Or the guy who does a stick up, but it’s just a banana, not a gun, and he tells the authorities not to take themselves too seriously.”

	Alain Johannes first came to international prominence with Eleven, a trio that featured Jack Irons (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and with Johannes’ beloved late wife, Natasha Shneider. Eleven released five albums between 1991 and 2003. Johannes and Shneider became sought out contributors, working with Chris Cornell on his celebrated 1999 solo debut, Euphoria Morning—which the couple co-wrote, co-produced, and toured in support of. They also lent their talents to Queens of the Stone Age’s chart-topping 2005 Lullabies To Paralyze and the subsequent two-year touring cycle that followed its release. Along the way, Alain either wrote, produced, or engineered projects for No Doubt, Mark Lanegan, Jimmy Eat World, Brody Dalle, and Arctic Monkeys, to name a few. Not to mention, he performed in PJ Harvey’s live band as well as Them Crooked Vultures where he shared stages worldwide with Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones. A sought-after composer for film, television, and video games, he has penned music for HBO’s Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) as well as Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Breakpoint. Plus, Grohl enlisted him as part of the Sound City Players, co-writing and performing various cuts on the soundtrack for Sound City.
