Maps Shares New Song/Video "Surveil"; New Album Out May 10

NEW ALBUM
COLOURS. REFLECT. TIME. LOSS.
RELEASED MAY 10 ON MUTE
Photo: Phil Sharp (hi-res)
Mercury Prize-nominated composer/producer Maps today shares “Surveil,” the last in his series of tracks before the release of his anticipated new album Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss. The album will be released May 10 via Mute. Watch the video for “Surveil” and pre-order Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss. here.

The first track on the album, “Surveil” marks Maps’s ambition for this record. It is an uplifting song enveloping the listener from the start with a warm opening section of layered harmonies, choral vocals, and the brass and strings of Echo Collective. It then builds into a joyous, anthemic blend of soaring orchestral and electronic sounds, as Chapman sings “You never hear them sing. You never hear them scream. There’s no one listening.”

Commenting on “Surveil,” Maps reveals: “The opening of the track is resonant of a simpler time - as the song progresses I was pushing for a euphoric escape with the music, with an undercurrent of uncertainty from the lyrics. It gives a taste of the overall sound and themes of the album.”

Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss. is a career-defining, ambitious album that sees the bedroom producer step out of the bedroom with his most collaborative project to date. The stunning, immersive and impressionistic songs – scored and produced by Maps himself – are inspired by an orchestral approach and by the peaceful, isolated Northamptonshire countryside beyond the window of his studio.

Three years in the making, Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss. is informed by the richness of life experience. It is an album he could only have made now and one that represents a creative reinvention for Maps.

Today, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds release a brand new single – "Black Star Dancing."  The single, produced by Noel, is taken from the EP of the same name - available digitally and on 12” vinyl to pre-order now– to be released on June 14th. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will headline Isle of Wight Festival the same day.

Noel says of the single: "It manages to combine the influences of David Bowie, INXS, U2, Queen, Indeep AND ZZ Top FFS! ... I might have been watching too much Top Of The Pops recently ... anyway, it's ‘dope’ … not my words, but the words of Nile Rodgers who literally danced in the studio when he heard it!”

Featuring new kaleidoscopic artwork by Gareth Halliday, the EP includes 2 new tracks “Rattling Rose” and “Sail On,” as well as a 12” mix of “Black Star Dancing” and a remix by London-based French DJ/producer Nicolas Laugier, aka The Reflex.

The full EP track-listing is:

Bill Callahan Announces New Album, Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest Out 6/14!

LET BILL CALLAHAN GUIDE YOU
Rejoice! Bill Callahan's late-phase hot streak continues with his first record since 2013, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest.

After Dream RiverBill's life went through some changes. Good changes - marriage and a kid - but afterwards, it was suddenly harder for him to find the place where the songs came, to make him and these new experiences over again into something to sing. His songs have always been elusive, landing lightly between character study and autobiography, as the singer-songwriter often does. This felt different, though. After 20 years of putting music first, he wasn't prepared to go away from it completely. Or perhaps, after all the time, the obvious needs to be made just a little more explicit?

First, it's a different kind of record. Bill's now writing from somewhere beyond his Eagle-Apocalypse-River headspace, and Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest is very much its own beast. The songs are, by and large, shorter, and there are more of them. It took almost all of the previous three albums to addup to that many. Plus, twenty's a lot of songs! But again, it goes a lot deeper than that.

When you finally listen to Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest, a feeling of totality, of completeness, will steal over you, like a thief in broad daylight. Of course it will- you'll be listening to a new Bill Callahan record! The first one in almost six years! What more do you need to complete you? Pre-order your copy for June 14th and get your tickets for his upcoming US/European tour!

Upcoming North American, European and UK Tour Dates

Today, Calexico and Iron & Wine share the gorgeous second single from their upcoming album, Years to Burn, entitled “Midnight Sun.” In “Midnight Sun,”Calexico’s Joey Burns and Sam Beam of Iron & Wine trade haunted-sounding verses over shimmering steel until the song devolves into a corrosive electric lead from Burns, like a dying siren. The video makes use of over 100 paintings Beam did for the creation of the new album’s cover. Working with animator Jonny Sanders, the video brings to life in a spirited and fun way, the many images of Burns, Beam and Calexico drummer John Convertino. Watch the video HERE.

Years to Burn is their first full–length album together and will be available June 14th via City Slang in the UK/Europe and Sub Pop in the rest of the world. Of the track, Joey Burns says “Sam sent some demos the week before we met to record the album. Based on the feel of those demos I wrote the song “Midnight Sun” the day I got to Nashville. I arrived at our rental house the day before everyone else and was happy to find a piano, old pump organ and guitar to do some writing. I was up late and came up with a tune that would bridge both bands’ worlds. I started with a drone in F# and was curious as to where it would take me.”

Calexico and Iron & Wine previously shared the lead single off of the album called “Father Mountain”. Listen to “Father Mountain” HERE. Early praise for Years to Burn:

"The warm voice of singer-songwriter Sam Beam (who performs as Iron & Wine) guides the album’s lead track “Father Mountain,” which features an airy acoustic progression and uplifting harmonies from Calexico’s Joey Burns." - Rolling Stone

"The inner peace that comes with that age and experience certainly shines through on “Father Mountain,” a jangly, pastoral reverie that takes on the fuzzy haze of fond memories slowly fading." - Paste Magazine

"["Father Mountain"] seems to skip spring and summer and arrives promptly on a crisp fall day. Pull on a cozy flannel and watch the gold and red leaves falling from the trees with the new song." - The Current

Years to Burn is available June 14th via City Slang in the UK/Europe and Sub Pop in the rest of the world. Album artwork and tracklisting below.
