Laibach Announce "The Sound Of Music" Album Out November 23; Watch The Video For The Title Track

LAIBACH have announced details of their eagerly awaited album, The Sound of Music, which is available via Mute on November 23 on vinyl, CD and digital formats. Listen to the opening track – a classic Laibachian interpretation of “The Sound of Music” – here.

The Sound of Music was conceived when Laibach were infamously invited to perform in North Korea in 2015. The band performed several songs from the 1965 film’s soundtrack at the concert in Pyongyang.The Sound of Music was chosen by Laibach as it’s a well-known and beloved film in the DPRK that is often used by schoolchildren to learn English. Laibach are joined by Boris Benko (Silence) and Marina Mårtensson on vocals. The album gives the Laibach treatment to tracks such as “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “Maria,” here reworked as “Maria / Korea” (“How do you solve a problem like Maria / Korea?”).

While the majority of the tracks on the album are from the film, the band also included “Arirang,” an interpretation of a traditional Korean folk song considered the unofficial national anthem of both North and South Korea (and released recently to mark the historic summit in Singapore between Donald Trump and the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un). Also included is their own workout of the Gayageum, a traditional Korean zither-like string instrument performed by students from the Kum Song Music School in Pyongyang and a recording of the band’s “welcome” speech to Korea from Mr. Ryu from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Committee for Cultural Relations.

Laibach’s groundbreaking performance in North Korea was documented by director, artist and cultural diplomat Morten Traavik in the film Liberation Day (described by MOJO as “a humorous, disturbing, illuminating and sometimes moving immersion into an anomalous communist mirror-world …”) which is out now via ITunes following its screening for Storyville on BBC4.

The album was recorded and produced in Ljubljana, Slovenia and in Pyongyang, North Korea. It represents another successful collaboration between Laibach and Silence (Primož Hladnik and Boris Benko), who previously co-created Laibach’s 2006 Volk album.

The cover was created by Valnoir, who has previously collaborated with Laibach and oversaw visuals across the band’s North Korean project. Valnoir explains, “Laibach and NSK have been without any doubt the most influential artists in my career. And since I was in charge of most of the visual elements for Laibach’s North Korean project, it was both logical and easy for me to dive into this fantastic and monumental project!”

The band will open the Steirischer Herbst festival in Austria with the live premiere of The Sound of Musicon September 20. The performance will feature a string sextet and children’s choir. A member of Laibach will DJ in a club in the middle of a mountain in the city of Graz later that evening. On the September 21, Ivo Salinger (aka Ivan Novak) will be in conversation with the director of the festival. Ahead of then, the band will perform in Ljubljana with the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra and have confirmed two dates in Russia in October. Over 35 years on from their genesis in the then-Yugoslavian industrial town Trbovlje, Laibach are still the most internationally acclaimed band to have come out of the former Communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Founded in the death year of the country’s founding father Tito, and rising to fame as Yugoslavia steered towards self-destruction, Laibach can make you think, dance and march to the same music.

“Suspirium” Single Out Now—Animated Video by Ruff Mercy Live Now

Following the fleeting reveal of instrumental passages in two trailers and today’s release of the track “Suspirium,” it can be confirmed: Thom Yorke’s Suspiria (Music for the Luca Guadagnino Film) will be released October 26 on XL Recordings.

Suspiria consists of 25 original compositions written by Thom specifically for Luca Guadagnino’s reimagining of the 1977 Dario Argento horror classic. The album is a mix of instrumental score work, interstitial pieces and interludes, and more traditional song structures featuring Thom’s vocals such as “Unmade,” “Has Ended” and “Suspirium,” the album’s first single featuring the melodic theme that recurs throughout the film and its score.

As scoring a horror film presented Thom with altogether new challenges and opportunities, Suspiriastands apart from any of his other work. Piano/vocal ballads, Krautrock-esque modular synth work inspired by the film’s Berlin 1977 setting, multilayered vocals, and melodies that convey terror, longing and melancholy combine to create a chaotic yet cohesive musical spell.

Suspiria was written and arranged by Thom Yorke, recorded and produced by Thom and Sam Petts-Davies. The album also features the London Contemporary Orchestra and Choir, Noah Yorke on drums on “Has Ended” and “Volk,” and Pasha Mansurov on solo flute on “Suspirium.”

BARRY ADAMSON will release Memento Mori (Anthology 1978-2018) – a 40th anniversary release chronicling the artist’s writing and recording career – on October 26.

Memento Mori charts Adamson’s career from 1978’s Magazine track, “Parade” (co-written by Adamson, from their debut album Real Life); to his work as founding member, alongside Nick Cave, of the Bad Seeds (“From Her To Eternity,” co-written by Adamson); through his nine solo albums, from 1988’sMoss Side Story to the latest Love Sick Dick EPs, bringing everything up to date with a brand new unreleased track, “The Hummingbird.”

Adamson’s collaborations work across all disciplines including film (he has scored for – amongst others – David Lynch and Oliver Stone). But on the 1996 track “Set Controls For The Heart Of The Pelvis,”he works alongside Jarvis Cocker, who provides inimitable vocals. Listen here.

Adamson explains how it all came about. “I used to see the founder of Rough Trade, Geoff Travis, on the school run and got a draft of the song to Jarvis via him along with the title and ideas. Both Jarvis and Geoff came into the Mute studio on the Harrow Road the day “Common People” went to number one and their car was hilariously mobbed. The session went real smooth and he had his rambunctious vocal nailed pretty fast.”

Barry Adamson has been creating all of his life. Brought up in Manchester’s Moss Side, Adamson learnt to play the bass overnight for Magazine, one of Manchester’s most influential bands of that era. When they disbanded – five albums later in 1981 – his singular style was spotted by The Birthday Party, with whom he played several times.

After a three-year stint with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Adamson released his classic first solo album, Moss Side Story - the ultimate soundtrack to an “imaginary film” - which raised Adamson’s name as a composer of diverse complexity; able to tell a story with music, where the images were those created in the minds of the listeners. Adamson has worked with some of the film industry’s most intriguing mavericks including Derek Jarman (The Last of England, 1987), David Lynch (The Lost Highway, 1997), Oliver Stone (Natural Born Killers, 1994) and Danny Boyle (The Beach, 2000).

Adamson has released nine studio albums, including the 1992 Mercury Music Prize-nominated Soul Murder, 1996’s Oedipus Schmoedipus – which includes collaborations with Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave and The Associates’ Billy McKenzie – and his most recent release, Know Where To Run, which was in part inspired by his recent return after 23 years to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’s touring lineup for a US run. In recent years, Adamson has contributed to collaborations across a variety of art forms including an Olivier Award-winning ballet performance by Sylvie Guillem and the Ballet Boyzhe scored.

It was always a logical progression for Adamson to move behind the camera and once again his brooding film noir style and dark comedy has seen him write, direct and score a number of short films including “The Swing The Hole and The Lie’’ (2014) as well as the recent video for "They Walk Amongst Us" (2017).

Adamson’s most recent releases, Love Sick Dick and Love Sick Dick Remixed – the latter of which features a reworking by A Certain Ratio (featured on the Anthology) as well as remixes from Gazelle Twin and ADULT. – have seen Adamson back on the road. Recent shows included a unique live performance cut straight to X-Ray film as part of an evening at the British Library examining the Soviet vinyl bootleggers.
