SUFJAN STEVENS, BRYCE DESSNER, NICO MUHLY AND JAMES MCALISTER JOIN FORCES FOR PLANETARIUM, OUT JUNE 9 ON 4AD

Planetarium, the new collaborative album co-composed by Sufjan StevensBryce DessnerNico Muhly and James McAlister, is set for release June 9 via 4AD. Album track “Saturn,” and its accompanying music video, premiere today—listen and watch herePlanetarium is now available for preorder here

A completely reimagined version of the project originally undertaken years ago and performed in various iterations around the world,Planetarium unites Stevens’ vocals, McAlister’s beats, Dessner’s guitar performance, and Muhly’s instrumental compositions—part rock odyssey, part electronic experiment, part classical opus.

Conceptually, Planetarium revolves around the cosmic ideas Stevens’ lyrics explore: mythology, astrology, science, astronomy and the intricacies of human consciousness.

The album began when Dutch concert hall Muziekgebouw Eindhoven commissioned Muhly to create a new piece and he enlisted friends Dessner, Stevens and McAlister, all of whom had been looking for the opportunity to collaborate on a larger scale.

After sketching the framework of the song cycle and performing the piece as a band—flanked by a string quartet and seven trombones—in various forms, the quartet put the project on hold for several years. Returning to the raw material in 2016, Stevens and McAlister reversed their typical process, taking recordings of the live show and adapting to the studio. “We had recorded all the arrangements and the live parts in a studio after our last performance,” says Stevens, “so years later when we all kind of settled down, we said, ‘let’s open Pandora’s box.’”

Stevens and McAlister worked to arrange Muhly’s symphonic framework and Dessner’s guitar virtuosity alongside their own lyrics and beats. Stevens became the driver behind the “song” part of the song cycle, his unique voice providing a clear and coherent center of gravity for the whole project.

In the time between Planetarium’s conception and release, Muhly wrote a new viola concerto and a commission for the Metropolitan Opera; Dessner released Trouble Will Find Me with The National, toured extensively and moved to Paris; and Stevens recorded and released Carrie & Lowell and, with McAlister, toured the album worldwide.

Fresh off a triumphant handful of US dates—including a surprise pop-up performance that was the talk of SXSW and a run of make-up dates including the euphoric sweat drenched NYC frenzy described above, At The Drive In has unleashed “Hostage Stamps,” the third single from the highly anticipated new album in • ter a • li • a, out May 5th on Rise Records. Listen now: iTunes / Spotify
Cedric Bixler-Zavala describes the song as “like walking through the hallway in some war-torn ghetto and reading the writing on the wall. When you hear things like, ‘Raise your nithing pole,’ I don’t think anyone will know what that is right away, but when you look it up, it’s this curse. We are going to be victorious. Here’s the fucking head on the stake in front of our army. We’re coming back. It’s reading the writing on the wall. It’s going and keeping your ear to the ground and listening to the heartbeat of young people.”
Expanding on that theme, the band has unveiled an ominous new video directed by Rob Shaw and Damon Locks (who also designed the characters and set) to accompany the single’s release. Using a mix of stop-motion as well as digital animation, the video depicts faceless militaristic figures holding a man captive, as billboards bearing ominous messages flash in and out of view. The final scene is an eruption of chaos as the prisoner sets off an explosion. Watch here: https://youtu.be/JoNJ6AQhmFY

Guided By Voices August By Cake (April 7, GBV Inc Records) is the 100th studio album that Robert Pollard has released since 1986's Forever Since Breakfast. To put that in perspective, Bob Dylan has released roughly 39 studio albums since 1959. And that includes the Traveling Wilburys.

A highly anticipated record with the new line-up (returning GBV veterans Doug Gillard and Kevin March, virgins Bobby Bare Jr and Mark Shue) that has been wowing audience in clubs and festivals throughout 2016. It's the most musically adept and versatile line-up Pollard has ever assembled.

With 32 songs, August By Cake is also GBV's first ever double-album, and song contributions from all five bandmembers is additional icing on this particular cake, setting album #100 apart from the previous 99.

The double album is an important format in Pollard's own musical iconography, and he doesn't take the form lightly -- one reason he's planned and abandoned several would-be GBV double albums in the past is his high regard for foundational works like Quadrophenia, the White AlbumThe Lamb Lies Down on BroadwayDaydream NationZen ArcadeDouble Nickels On the Dime -- "defining records for these bands," says Pollard. It's important to him that August By Cake not just be a double album but that it be a great double album.

Spring tour dates, including Coachella Festival are below, and there are several surprises in store for 2017.
